06/17/2005 04:36 PMNot even the Queen is immune to the allure of the iPod, according to
British daily The Sun. The paper reported on Friday that Queen

Wow,
Sony can't catch a break. First the Queen of England buys an
iPod mini. Then, at a luncheon with new Sony CEO Howard
Stringer—a known Englishman Welshman (Welsh, English,
whatev! Don't make us bomb you.)—the Queen chided him for
making products that are difficult to use. "I have a lot of trouble
with your remote controls," she's quoted. "Too many arrows."
What Queen Elizabeth II neglected to admit, however, is that due to
the long history of in-marriage in the Hapsburg line, she has only a
single lobster claw at the tip of each arm.

Team Can Expand Your Market at the
O'Reilly Emerging
Technology Conference in San Diego.
RIT is struggling with enrolment, but the enrolment is
overwhelmingly male. Why not bring in more women? It's an
untapped field and it makes men happier.
People say that women don't want want to be there, why are your
forcing them to go? But this is what people said about math 30
years ago.
Today there's gender parity in math classes, but subtle pressures
steered them away.
We design products for men -- women get killed by airbags. If you
include women in the devleopment of product, you diversify the
view. Women aren't the only viewpoint you need to include, but
it's half the potential market.
Anil Dash: It's no coincidence that the two popular blogging
packages (Blogger and MT) were co-developmed by women (Meg
Hourihan and Mena Trott).

SBC Pulls Out the Stops in Wi-Fi Deals
SBC Pulls Out the Stops in Wi-Fi Deals
07/20/2004 02:21 PMSBC Communications announced a host of Wi-Fi partnerships and deals
today to extend the reach of its network and maximize traffic passing
across locations they operate: SBC will resell access to its
FreedomLink network, which will include 300 Caribou Coffee stores
(Midwest and South-central and Southeast coast) as well as the
thousands of The UPS Store locations, to iPass, GoRemote, and
Syniverse. This reselling agreement will be live by the end of 2004.
SBC FreedomLink subscribers will have access to Concourse
Communications hotspots (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Detroit, and
Minneapolis/St. Paul), Telmex (400 Mexican locations), and Wise
Technologies (an array of retail and airport venues). Access to those
locations won't be included in a monthly fee from SBC, but will cost
just $4 per day, which is often less than half the cost of the retail
prices for those venues. This roaming arrangement will also be in
place before year's end. In the same press release, SBC notes that it
is selling 3,000 home Wi-Fi gateways each day to SBC Yahoo! DSL
customers. They reiterated that later this year, FreedomLink will be
offered to its DSL subscribers at a "significant discount." SBC is
deploying several tactics at once here, increasing the size of its
self-operated network to make the total number of hotspots more
appealing to subscribers while also making the network more appealing
to resellers. Providing discounted access to other hotspot network is
useful for business travelers who may have no compunction about paying
$4 a few times a month for airport access. By emphasizing the scale of
home Wi-Fi adoption and its coming discounted plan for its millions of
DSL subscribers, SBC also makes the network more appealing to new
venues considering which hotspot operator to work with....

Tix LED Clock

03/29/2005 11:24 AM
The Tix LED Clock is a
somewhat classy (if you live in an adobe hut on an alien world),
LED-based clock that shows you the time in one of more than a million
different patterns. Each panel represents a digit of the time, wherein
the number of lighted squares is the respective value for that panel.
(It's 12:34 in the above example.) Still, you don't need to tell
anyone else that, allowing your friends to believe you're far more
intelligent than they are. It can be your secret code-clock! It's only
$60 and definitely easier to read than the binary clocks on
ThinkGeek.

Iowa Unwires Rest Stops
02/05/2005 09:26 PM Iowa joins a growing trend of states with large empty stretches: For
traffic safety purposes, the more frequently people stop, stretch, and
take their eyes off the road, the better. Adding Wi-Fi at rest stops
is just one tool in that arsenal, but it's also a nice idea for
tourists, truckers, and business travelers. Iowa will equip a total of
40 locations by July; 20 of them by mid-March. A trial set of eight
locations had 111,000 access over seven months. Several stops are
active on Interstates 35 and 80. Service will be free and operated by

U.S. Stops Abuse of Prisoner (but only
in Iraq)
05/15/2004 01:12 PMNY Times: Top
Commander Bars Coercive Tactics in Interrogation of Iraqis.
Mr. Rumsfeld has said that the American military in Iraq was abiding
by the Geneva Conventions, and that the mistreatment was the work of a
terrible few. But at a Senate hearing on Thursday, Mr. Rumsfeld's
deputy, Paul D. Wolfowitz, acknowledged that hooding prisoners or
forcing them to crouch naked for 45 minutes — tactics available
to interrogators with General Sanchez's approval under the old policy
— was inhumane. The International Red Cross had warned American
officials for months that Iraqi prisoners were being abused in
American-run prisons.
A good shift in policy. But as
the Times also

d recently, it's abuse-as-usual in U.S. jails. When will that
change?

chasing another kind of wireless. Truck-stops that install WiFi can
attract more business from bandwidht-hungry long-haul drivers.
David Maloney, a trucker from Aledo, Texas, is one who'll go the
distance to reach a truck stop equipped with wireless Internet access.
"The only time I really get to use any kind of broadband is out here
on the road," said Maloney, who recently stopped at a Flying J with
Wi-Fi on his way from Virginia to Appleton, Wis. "That's the whole
reason I came this far last night."
