Okay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us,
and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have
to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design -
the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have
a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release
a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?
Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post
in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which
you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed
it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

And last but not least (if you're reading from the
bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new
peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset
with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that
also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not
actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly
recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery
and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing
charge to go along with it.
The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't
scheduled until Q1 2005.

The Sound and the
Fury. 75 years ago,
William Faulkner finished
his fourth novel. It was
published
later in the fall (October 7, 1929), and for the first fifteen
years sales totaled just over 3,300 copies (an
appendix was
added
in 1946, when
mo
st of Faulkner's books were
out
of print. Of course, a few years after that he was awarded the
Nobel Prize). It was Faulkner's own favorite novel, primarily,
he said, because he considered it his "most splendid
failure".
Many critics think it's the finest work of an American Master: the key
to Faulkner, wrote
Alfred Kazin
(.pdf file), lies not only in the unflinching extremity of his
God-blasted characters, but in the odd and unaccountable moments of
redemptive human tenderness.
The Internet is very kind to Faulkner's fans: we can check out the
Faulk
ner home, his
manuscripts and even his pipe, trivia from his
Postmas
ter's days, we can read examples of his
snark
iness (hurled against Hemingway and
C
lark Gable), we can admire the pages of
screenplays from his
Hollywood<

Japan.

Nokia's 3220 Airtexter
Nokia's 3220 Airtexter
06/01/2004 07:25 AM
Nokia's new 3220 is a nice
enough tri-band phone, with integrated VGA camera and all the standard
stuff, but besides looking like the bottom of a shoe, it's most known
for its optional Xpress-on funshell which adds 'airtexting' using a
persistence of vision LED array (as seen in Phillip Torrone's
POV shoes or any number of Burning Man art projects). By waving the
phone back and forth through the air, users can display short messages
that appear to be much larger than the phone itself and look something
like those LED signs that tell you how long you have to wait in queue
at the DMV. It's a fun concept, but somewhat hard to explain to those
that haven't seen it, and it brings up some interesting concepts when
it comes to heckling. With the ability to
quickly generate an LED sign with an message on it, will airtexting be
the next thing that causes cellphones to be banned from public
places?

Nokia 1110 and Nokia 1600
06/06/2005 12:09 AM
Nokia announced their 1600 and 1110
models, meant to be affordable, easy-to-use and light on frills. Nokia
is targeting developing nations with these models and they look well
enough to suit their purpose as part of a plan to eventually offer
mobile service for just $5 a month. They both feature talk times of
over 5 hours and the Nokia 1600 has a 65k color screen while the Nokia
1110 uses a sunlight-friendly inverted black and white display.
They're expected to retail for $105 and $85, respectively, and will be
available later this year.

It looks like people haven’t been slow to get using
Nokia’s Python project, and Matt
Croydon has been collating projects and news on his Pyth

Seeing as there’s no

projects right now, I reckon this is as good a focal point as
any.
The official public release of Python on Series

Nokia rarely announces just one product at a time,
and today was no exception. In addition to that Remote Camera, they
also have revealed the Nokia 6670, a tri-band phone (in both US and
Everybody Else tunings), that looks a lot like a 7610 without the
strange keypad and the gussied up case. Instead the 6670 is a fairly
plain looking model - although appealing, in its way, as long as you
don't mind the New Era Nokia asymmetric styling - that runs Series 60
and has a one-megapixel camera.
Nokia's plan is all starting to make a lot more sense to me now.
Release the eye-catching, weirdo phones first, then release a follow
up model that people with actually buy. I don't understand why
that's their plan, but that seems to be it.

Nokia 6630
12/31/2004 10:59 AMOn Malik likes
his. I wonder if I can trade out my 7610 for a 6630? Charlie?
Here's
Om's post....
It is hard for me to imagine that I am carrying around in my
pocket a computer that is as powerful as my first generation Pentium
powered AST desktop, I wrestled with back in 1995, typing out
scintiallting stories about memory chip prices for Quick Nikkei News.
It seemed breezy enough, running the now forgotten Windows 3.1. With
some kicking around, the TCP/IP stack on it worked for me to get
Internet access as well. Fast forward by ten years, and the new Nokia 6630
packs a mightier punch - a 200 MHz ARM 5 processor - in a small
but lethal package.
The Nokia 6630 is based
on Symbian OS. It is a tri-band phone for GSM 900/1800/1900, EDGE and
WCDMA networks. Weighing 127 grams and measuring 110 x 60 x 20.6 mm,
it is world’s smallest megapixel phone for GSM and WCDMA networks.
It has everything you would normally want in a good smart-enough
phone. Clearly, this is the best 3G phone on the market, especially
given that how the others are so clunky and well ugly! It is light
enough that sometimes I forget it is sitting in my pocket.

Nothing is more fun to write about than mystery gadgets
that have no backstory and no included information, but sometimes you
gots to take what you gets. So here you go: an unnamed Series 90
phone/pda/thing prototype from Nokia. I'm not even positive it's
Series 90, but the widescreen would certainly imply that. You can be
sure it's from Nokia, though, because it looks like a crappy science
fiction chess board.
The picture is labelled Nokia 7710, for whatever that's worth. If
you recall, the 7700 was the Series 90 showcase phone that Nokia
cancelled before it hit the market.

Nokia 7260
08/17/2004 11:27 AM
A Czech
site has what appears to be at first glance an updated 7610, called
the 7260, but upon closer inspection appears to be one of two things:
either a cheaper, Series 40 phone for those who want the looks of the
7610 but not all the features (dumb people, some call them), or
possibly a prototype of the 7610 that was never meant to see the light
of day. I don't read Czech, though, so mostly I'm just extrapolating
from the bits of familiar numbers I can fish out. Either way, kind of
nice looking - wait, no, hideous - and certainly somehow related to
the 7610.
In fact, doing a little snooping about, it seems a few European
shoppers have seen these in stores and claim they are smaller than the
7610, while just sharing their general shape. This I cannot
confirm.
