07/08/2004 03:39 AMThe 13th IST Mobile & Wireless Communications Summit held in Lyon
27-30 June has proved to be a major forum to present results of
European mobile industry initiatives. IST has succeeded in drawing
attention to the launch of its « 6th framework » programme, which
defines the priorities of the Mobile Industry in terms of research and
development for the two years ahead. More specifically, it raises the
health and safety issues arising from the rapid development of new
technologies and their impact on society. On a more positive note, the
“6th framework” outlines emerging marketing opportunities in the IT
sector. Visions of the Mobile future and the technological challenges
were addressed by speakers from Hewlett Packard, Motorola, and
Philips. [PRWEB Jul 8, 2004]

Mobile Video Redux
Mobile Video Redux
07/21/2004 12:38 PM
Mobile Video is going to be the
killer app. It is *so* compelling. Screw the nay-sayers who
go on about postage-stamp sized screens, etc. This is going to be a
killer use for next gen networks. It'll be the *reason* to buy the
phone (the definition of a killer app). Think about all the time being
spent on Tetris right now and replace that with streaming MTV and you
get what I'm talking about.
Also in reverse. Taking video with your mobile then posting it online
is going to be huge as well. It goes back to my Personal Broadcasting
mantra I repeat over and over again. With a $300 UMTS phone and a free
Blogger account, suddenly everyone's a Live From The Scene Reporter.
There's been many times in our history where people were able to
publish to the masses - even before desktop publishing was big. Think
about those old high-school "ditto" machines. But broadcasting?
Distributing video and sound out to hundreds, thousands, tens of
thousands of people? Very few people in the history have had that
ability until now. Look out Ted Turner, here comes the real 24/7 news.
And even less ambitious uses are insanely compelling. Mobile video
means no more searching for the camcorder when the kid does something
cool. No more "Say hi to Nana... no, no. Say hi. Say hi. Hmm. he was
talking a minute ago." Instead it's all captured and sent in a blink
of an eye, or streamed live while you chat. This stuff is *cool* and
its *here*
We need mobile media services quick! I want my TiVo streamed to my
phone! I want a real-time Real and WMV to 3GP conversion server! I
want XM Radio, but over WCDMA! I want a video conference with the
iChat A/V guys! I want to have access to all media! Now! Ever see that
commercial where the guy walks into an old hotel and asks about what
stations they get and the lady says something like "We have every
station, movie, television show and play ever created." Yeah! That's
what I want! Now! In my hand!
Are you with me!? :-D

Ad Supported Mobile Video
Ad Supported Mobile Video
08/06/2004 05:54 AMWhile many of the carriers continue to look for ways to get every last
dime when it comes to mobile content, it appears that O2 is willing to
try a little experiment that you might just recognize: say hello to ad
supported content. That's right, O2 and a company named Unanimis
Consulting (bet you they need to spell that out for everyone they talk
to) have decided to
launch a mobile video offering that will be supported
by typical commercials. Funny that they do this just as some are
saying
the
traditional TV commercial is dying. Maybe it's just moving to the
mobile phone? I would bet not. Moco News points out that this may be
a
sign of a trend
shift where mobile phone service will move towards more ad
supported revenue, but it's not going to be with 30 second spots.
Since most mobile services and content need to really fit in with what
the person is doing, having them deal with a 30 second commercial
doesn't seem particularly compelling. Mobile video on the go needs to
be flexible in terms of the amount of time it takes, because no one is
planning on catching a full TV show on their phone. They're only
going to watch at points when they're stuck somewhere with no TV and
have a free moment. Sticking commercials into that time doesn't seem
like it will attract that much interest.

Belkin PureAV Wireless Video Transmitter
Belkin PureAV Wireless Video Transmitter
09/15/2004 06:07 AM
For something that costs $500 and has 40Mbit of wireless
bandwidth at its disposal, you'd think the Belkin PureAV could do a
little better than SDTV signal (Standard Definition), even if it does
have component input and output. Basically a wireless wire, the PureAV
is designed to let you transmit video signal up to 350 feet (depending
on interference, like walls, or hurricanes). And it looks like it is
compressing the signal via MEPG2 before it beams it, which probably
isn't that big a deal, but come on! How could anyone drop $500 on
something these days that can't at least support higher resolution
formats? Maybe there's something going on here I'm missing.
Oh, here are the last four DiscHub codes. What a fun contest. We'll
definitely do this again: RFG987 FIG398 2587RT RE58TH
