While Google has made news for its plans to launch a desktop search tool that would compete with Microsoft's desktop search tool in Longhorn (should, you know, that ever get released), AskJeeves continues to putter away quietly in the background buying up small companies and expanding their own offerings. The latest is that, rather than build up a desktop search offering, they've gone out and bought Tukaroo, a provider of desktop search tools. It will be interesting to see if AskJeeves starts to get more attention, or if they remain quietly in the background.

ACD Systems International Inc. has added a new entry to its line of illustration software: Canvas 9 Advanced Mapping Edition. The new application offers native support for Geographic Information System (GIS) data as well as the vector illustration, image editing, page layout and other features found in the other editions of Canvas. Features that are new to Canvas 9 Advanced Mapping Edition include the ability to select objects based on specific properties or other values, an option to change the appearance of map objects according to property values, map symbols replacement and more. In addition, expanded import/export options offer several new GIS-specific import filters and retention of geo-referenced data during export to five formats.
