Pocket Breathalizer with UV Detector

Pocket Breathalizer with UV Detector 06/14/2004 02:44 PM

alcohol_uv.jpg imagePocket Breathalizers are a dime a dozen these days, but this combo one has an extra ultraviolet detector on the tail end, so you can tell not only when you're too drunk to drive, but when you should be sipping that umbrella drink under an umbrella. $20 or so will get you one, although I don't know if UK retailer SilverCandy imports to the US. I'm tempted, though -- I've always been curious how much UV I get underneath a subway bench.

Love Detector Seems Better At Detecting
Excuses
04/12/2004 03:44 AM
Well, I'd like to give Techdirt's readers the benefit of the doubt and assume that they would all be fairly skeptical of a product called "The Love Detector" that promised to tell you, just by hearing someone speak, if they were in love with the person they were speaking to. They even claim that it's accurate with 96% confidence - though when a Reuters reporter tested it out, he found it didn't seem to work at all, though a recording from the IRS seemed to indicate at least some special interest. This isn't the first time that articles like this have been written, but what's especially amusing is the excuses that the company comes up with every time they're confronted with examples of the system not working. It appears the company may have spent much more time coming up with excuses than actually making sure the device did what it's advertised to do.

Smoke Detector Considered The Pinnacle
Of Innovation
06/03/2004 12:07 PM
The details of how this study was conducted are not entirely clear, but apparently, when asked, folks in the UK consider the smoke detector to be the top innovative gadget, beating out mobile phones, microwave ovens and digital cameras. I keep looking for the punchline about how this study was sponsored by a smoke detector company, but can't find it. It's not that the good old smoke detector isn't a useful gadget - it's just that it seems strange that so many people would pick it as the most innovative. The article quotes people saying that this shows how much the Brits value practicality, but it makes me wonder if the Brits are having trouble filling out surveys properly - or if they just tend to set themselves on fire too often.

Apple Patents iPod Acceleration Detector

Apple Patents iPod Acceleration Detector 12/25/2004 05:18 PM

ipod.jpgAccording to this article posted yesterday on CNET, Apple has applied for a patent on technology which would allow an iPod (or other device) to detect when it is falling and shut down the hard drive, minimizing the potential damage to drive and data due to impact. How soon this technology will find its way into the iPod, assuming it ever does, is unknown. Considering that IBM has deployed similar technology in its ThinkPads, I wouldn't be surprised if it appears within the next generation or two.

Tricks of the Trade

Tricks of the Trade 08/27/2004 01:33 PM

The Morning News has a fun article on "tricks of the trade": documenting little tricks used in various professions. Great stuff.

This year, for instance, a programmer can always tack the phrase "and I'm thinking of incorporating some XML functionality" onto a project summary to explain why he'll need an extra week, account for a missed deadline, or impress a superior. In this respect, the gap between software engineers and birthday clowns is almost negligible.

Tricks of the trades

Tricks of the trades 03/22/2005 04:37 PM
Trade Tricks is a collection of all the little 'tricks of the trade' which people build up with experience. Some are pretty hum-drum, but others are useful even if you don't practice the trade. For example, this tip for checking if a diamond is real may at some time be handy, and this one for washing a pan would have been useful last night. Found via, and run by the writer of, defective yeti

Spam That Tricks Me

Spam That Tricks Me 11/06/2003 04:11 AM
If you get enough spam, I'm sure you know the feeling. As you sort through your mail, deleting the obvious spam, you find one that you're not sure about and you end up opening it - and sure enough, it's spam that tricked you. Every time you do that, you probably feel a little silly for getting tricked. I know I do. Columbia Professor Sree Sreenivasan discusses a few of the messages that tricked him and explains why he was fooled. He's a lot more forgiving than I am, but I get fooled by more than my fair share. Meanwhile, picking up on Sreenivasan's column is another reporter who points out that if any readers want to email him, they need to come up with a subject line that is clearly not spam. I agree. I know there have been a few borderline emails that I opened and turned out to not be spam - but I couldn't tell from the subject lines. I'm sure there are others that I've ended up deleting.
