Smart Shopping Carts

There are variety of useful things that could be done
with an LCD on a shopping cart, and not all of them involve
pornography. MSNBC takes a wireless-enable "Shopping Buddy" cart out
for a spin and walks away pretty impressed, finding it to make
shopping a lot more convenient and, surprisingly, fun. Simple things
like being able to place an order in the deli and receive a notice
when its ready to pick up sound great. And emailing a shopping list
from home to the cart? Sign me up. I have left my shopping list at
home literally the last three times I've gone out, and it takes a lot
of effort to remember if I needed a 750ml or 1750ml bottle and whether
or not we needed whippets.

Union Worried About High Tech Shopping
Carts
12/03/2003 12:18 PMWe've had plenty of stories about
high
tech shopping carts, but this latest NPR story (found on
Politech) is a bit surprising. It starts out normally
enough, talking about how everyone loves these new shopping carts that
help them find products they want, while also keeping track of how
much they're spending. The carts also allow for additional features,
such as letting you make "remote" orders to the deli counter while you
shop elsewhere in the store. The odd part, though, is in the later
part of the segment when they talk to a union representative who
complains
about how these terrible shopping carts are going to take away
jobs. You would think, by this point, unions would understand how
technology works, and that if the technology really is useful, their
industry is simply going to change. Fighting against it does no good
for anyone. It just makes consumers less happy while doing nothing to
actually prevent the technology from moving forward. In the meantime,
as wonderful as these shopping carts sound, I'd bet there's going to
be plenty of job openings for folks to repair them. It wasn't that
long ago that shopping carts everywhere started showing up with little
"calculators" to help shoppers total up their purchases. I don't
think I ever saw one that wasn't smashed. Keeping a fully
computerized system running is likely to take a lot more work.

"Painters of Blight" show at Roq la Rue
in Seattle
06/30/2004 01:12 PM

Seattle's Roq la Rue Gallery (2316 Second Avenue) is running a two-day
exhibit on Friday, July 9, and Saturday, July 10, featuring the work
of two dozen artists paying tribute to Thomas Kinkade and Jack T.
Chick. (click on thumbnails for enlargements. Painting on left is by
Jim Blanchard; painting on right is by Johnny Ryan).
As you probably know, Thomas Kinkade, the famous "Painter of
Light," has made millions of dollars with his customized prints of
day-glo cottages against backdrops of enchanted forests. He has a team
of "Kinkade-trained Master Highlighters" who go over reproductions of
his work with oil paint. For this show, artists Jim
Blanchard, Kamala Dolphin-Kingsley, Robert Hardgrave, Claire Johnson,
Charles Krafft, Pat Moriarity, Erin Norlin, Marion Peck, Benton Peugh,
Robert Rini, Bonni Reid, Mark Ryden and Kipling West have highlighted
pages
from the Thomas Kinkade Painter of Light with Scripture: 2004 Deluxe
Wall
Calendar, in their own distinct styles.
And Jack T. Chick is the famous artist-publisher of a series of
incendiary 3" x 5", 24-page religious comic book tracts. Loaded with
scare tactics and jabs at "enemies" of Christianity, Chick's comics
vividly depict the horrors of Hell for anyone who neglects to convert
to Christianity. Since 1961 Chick has created 175 proselytizing
tracts, which have had more than 500,000,000 copies published
in over 100 languages worldwide. Artists Tom Bagley, David R. Drake,
Jed Dunkerly, Nathan Eyring, Rod Filbrandt, Cliff Hare, David Lasky,
Deborah F Lawrence, Eric Reynolds, Johnny Ryan and Kamilla White have
each created work inspired by Chick. In contrast to the Kinkade
artists, they worked with no specific assignment, and came up with
equally diverse outcomes: David R. Drake reduced an entire tract to
its minimum visual information, creating 23 individual tiles still
closely correlated with the original, Eric Reynolds has painted an
original portrait of the reclusive Jack T. Chick, and David Lasky will
display the original art for an entire tract written by Jim Woodring
intended to be traded for unwanted religious pamphlets.
No link, but you can find out more about Roq la Rue here.

How Old Is E-Commerce?
How Old Is E-Commerce?
08/11/2004 01:37 PMAccording to News.com,
we're officially at the
10-year anniversary of electronic commerce, as defined by the
first secure transaction on NetMarket, on August 11, 1994. The folks
at the Internet Shopping Network disagree, claiming they started a few
months earlier. Of course, it all depends on how you define
"e-commerce." This article seems to define it as a secure, web-based
transaction. However, even before these started showing up, I
remember purchasing CDs from CDNow and CDConnection using
telnet in either 1993 or early 1994, and I'm sure plenty of
others could make claims to earlier "online" purchases. It certainly
wasn't secure, but who was worried about security back then? Of
course, it doesn't really matter when e-commerce really started, but
it is amusing that no one seems to remember those pre-web offerings.
