Todd Lappin has finished installing his 707 jet panel in his house. It
looks incredible!
This hangs on one wall of our living
room, above the stairway that leads down to the garage. As you walk up
the steps, you get this view.
My 707 has come a long way since I first found it at an aircraft
scrapyard in Tucson. Here's a daylight view, shortly after I stripped
off the paint. The illumination comes from rope lights mounted on the
structurally-cool back side. (Next time you rest your head against a
window-seat wall to snooze, this is basically what lies
underneath.)

Hybrid Solar Lighting
Hybrid Solar Lighting
03/14/2005 06:02 PM
Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which conducts all of its
research in tuneful four part harmony, has developed a system that
uses sunlight (I actually started to write 'solar-powered light')
pumped down fiber-optic tubes to complement an integrated system of
flourscent bulbs. When there's sufficient light outside, a sensor cuts
the electric blubs, letting the light shine in. Obviously, piping
light from roofs to fixtures is something that's best done when the
buildings are actually built, but it's a great idea all the same.
Of course, they don't mention that the light snakes down around
your throat as you sit in satori, attempting to harness the power of
mind to expand your forehead real estate. (Thanks, Boo Boo
Prime!)

MoCo Loco shows us the
SystemX modular lighting system. "SystemX is an X-shaped lightning
module that can be interconnected with other SystemX modules to create
lighting structures." The system can take the form of just two or
three X's connected together, to a near-infinite expanse with zones of
differing temperatures of light throughout. Very cool, even if there's
no word as to retail availability or pricing.

Xeni Jardin:

The "Gravity" lamp reclines and goes to sleep when you're not in the
room. When you enter, it awakens, stands up, and turns on.
Fun Furde says, "The
Gravity is equal parts cute and creepy. Cute because it's sort of like
a pet that's happy to see you when you come home. Creepy because it's
a lamp that moves by itself! No idea if they're actually going to make
this or how much it will cost if they do. Or how they keep the
lightbulb from smashing when it hits the ground."

07/01/2004 08:50 AMSwedish developer Illuminate Labs announced on Wednesday the release
of
Turtle, a new
Maya lighting renderer that was in Beta testing at more than 200 sites
during the previous 13 months. Turtle 1.0 can render scenes both
within Maya and as a stand-alone application. It features raytracing
and global illumination algorithms called LiquidLight, 3D motion blur,
true depth-of-field, animation and batch rendering, support for Maya
shading networks and more. Turtle requires Maya 6 and sells for
US$1,199 per workstation license, which comes with a graphic user
interface (GUI), and $999 per render node license, which lacks a GUI.

10/28/2003 11:09 PMToday, I know the beauty of an unanswered question. It taunts those
who don't have the right algorithm - and it can't be hacked. Even with
a map on the floor, there is no direction. Regardless, the only way to
hold onto something is to let it run free. And so I will - aimless
with focus. Depth... is impossible to understand. But even if you
could, would you want to? Even if you wanted to, could you? In a word:
yes....

Philly CIO in Depth
02/01/2005 09:13 PM David Haskin at Mobile Pipeline interviews Philadelphia CIO Dianah
Neff: The article is wide ranging and reveals more of the plan that
will be unveiled Feb. 7. Neff argues--as I have--that it's
disingenuous for giant telecoms to decry city tax-free financing
because, first of all, that's not how Philadelphia will pay for this
network (nor did they ever say they would use tax-free bonds for it),
and second, the telecoms have received without complaint billions of
dollars in subsidies. As one article has pointed out, Verizon received
enormous payments in the last decade to encourage them to build
services that they didn't. Instead of being penalized, the bill passed
in Pennsylvania gives them another decade with more incentives. Neff
tips her hand a little about the unique public-private partnership
that she's been alluding to in recent weeks: I've been pushing the
notion of vendor-neutral municipal networks that provide a place for
all ISPs on an equal basis, including Verizon, and that don't put the
city in the business of being a provider. Rather, a municipality
becomes an enabler; the money for logical access is all spent in the
private sector and non-profit sector. Neff cited the existence of
hundreds of ISPs that she hopes will be part of the city's venture,
which makes it sound an awful lot like a vendor-neutral network....

Legoland Tracking in Depth
04/27/2004 09:27 PMRFID Journal provides the detail on Legoland's kid-tracking Wi-Fi
hardware: The magazine provides piles of additional detail about the
Denmark theme park's system to let parents find their children if
lost. The system combines BlueSoft's AeroScout system with software by
KidSpotter, which on its Web site, is more explicit that the system
can be used to track visitors patterns for better park optimization.
About 1,600 children or 0.1 percent of the 1.6 million visitors,
become separated from parents each year, so it's a small but
significant problem. The rental fee is €3 per day; the entrance
fee is mid-€20s. The park is installing 38 AeroScout units which
cost from $3,000 to $4,000 each. The tags themselves cost about $85
each and the park is starting with 500 of them. Not mentioned in this
article is that the tags use very tiny amounts of one-way signalling
which allows their batteries to last for years....
