Well, that was quick: GameStop drops the
price of the N-Gage to $199
10/29/2003 01:14 AM

Less than three weeks after its release, GameStop is offering Nokia's N-Gage gamephone for $199.99, a full hundred bucks off the retail price. Now while $200 is probably a lot closer to what the N-Gage should have been priced at if Nokia had seriously wanted to compete against Nintendo's Game Boy Advance, it's probably going to make it even harder for them to make any money off of this thing. Anyone have any predictions for when Nokia pulls the plug on this ill-fated venture? Read...

01/04/2005 11:12 AM

23gz_xserve.jpg imageWhat would make Apple announce a upgraded Xserve G5 just a week before MacWorld? Could it be that they're so crammed full of new product announcements that they're actually pushing stuff out early? Wishful thinking, perhaps, and idle besides—this 2.3GHz Dual G5 rackmounted machine is a beaut. Why can't all my machines be rackmounted, huh? If I didn't play videogames, I could ditch these goofy square machines forever.

Slightly more plebian, though, is news that Apple has dropped the price of the Cinema Displays, starting with the 20-inch model for $1,000, up to the 30-inch for three large. (Thanks, Lawrence!)

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

It gets worse for the N-Gage 11/11/2003 03:18 PM
We wouldn't keep kicking the N-Gage when it's down like this, but the bad news keeps on coming. The latest calamity: the encryption that prevents N-Gage games from being played on other cellphones has been cracked, so now there's no reason to buy Nokia's gamephone if you just want to play one of its games. Normally this wouldn't be such a big deal since Nokia would at least see some money from people buying the games, but copies of N-Gage games are already being swapped online. So Nokia is doubly screwed. Read [Thanks everyone who wrote in with this]...

JOEL JOHNSON --Someone has leaked the first shots of Nokia's next N-Gage iteration, and sadly all the reports are true: Sidetalkin', the go-to joke of 2003 is no more. What's more, there is also a proper MMC slot so that games can be inserted without removing the battery. Although this...

N-Gage: Backtalkin'

N-Gage: Backtalkin' 06/01/2004 10:29 AM

ngage_backtalkin.jpg imageSo you bought a first-generation N-Gage and now you're feeling sort of silly using it, tacohead and such. First of all, stick to your guns, cowboy. The N-Gage, for all its faults as a game device, is a pretty nice Symbian phone. Plus now, if you're feeling especially cavalier, you can modify your N-Gage to work just like a regular phone with a speaker/earpiece in the back, which is a little goofy, I guess, but nothing like the travesty that is Sidetalkin'. AllAboutNGage has a howto, which looks to be mostly a fairly simple (if delicate) one drill job. (Thanks, Ewan!)

Nokia N-Gage QD Review 06/11/2004 09:40 AM

ngage06-lrg.jpg imageWe've all given Nokia a break with the launch of the N-Gage QD. I mean, they fixed Sidetalkin', added a longer-lasting battery, they dropped extraneous features like stereo sound ... wait, whaa happan? Digital Lifestyles has the first of a three-part review up, focusing on the hardware of the QD and while it seems like a perfectly capable Series 60 phone (much like the first N-Gage), I just don't know what in the hell Nokia is doing anymore. The way to gaming console success probably isn't to make a device that people might sort of be interested in if it's free.
