World's smallest MiniDisc player 10/29/2003 01:14 AM

It's something of a dubious distinction these days, but Panasonic has come out with the world's lightest and smallest MiniDisc player. The SJ-MJ97 weighs a mere 63 grams with battery and is just 11mm thick. Read...

Stout_Infantfish_cm1 The "stout infantfish" has been identified as the smallest, lightest animal with a backbone. The largest of only six specimen ever found is just 8.4 millimeters long. Stout infantfish swim exclusively near Australia's Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea. Scientists who studied the fish at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography point out that "roughly 500,000 of these fish weighed together would barely tip the scales at one pound." Link

BrailleNote PK: World's Smallest PDA for

BrailleNote PK: World's Smallest PDA for
the Blind
06/30/2004 11:10 AM

brailleNote_PK.jpg imageThe BrailleNote PK is the world's smallest PDA for the blind, and one of the first small enough to be carried around for daily use. Powered by Windows CE, the relatively small [6.8" x 3.6" x 1.3"] unit has a mix of high-end and low-end features, with a wide variety of communications options such as Bluetooth and WiFi, Ethernet, and USB, but a relatively small amount of RAM [16MB User/16MB RAM/32MB ROM], and somewhat surprisingly (I'm serious), no LCD screen. In fact, all interfacing with the BrailleNote is done via a built-in 180cell Braille display and an 8-key Braille keyboard. The unit also supports text-to-speech out support, although not speech-to-text, if I read correctly.

It looks like a great unit, but it comes with a very steep price. The BrailleNote PK lists for just under $5,000. With the amount of geeky freedom this would afford many, though, it just might be worth it.

Epson Creates World's Smallest MAV

JCN Newswire says that Epson is claiming to have developed the world's smallest flying microrobot. Epson developed the uFR (Micro Flying Robot) to demonstrate the micromechanics technology using an ultrasonic motor and bluetooth module for remote control. The uFR flys via two contra-rotating propellers and ultrasonic motor that has the world's highest power to weight ratio. The flying robot can balance in mid-air using the world's first linear actuator stabilizer mechanism. Epson sold previous Micro Air Vehicle versions such as the EMRos and the Monsieur flying robots, so I'm wondering if this one will be out by Christmas to fly around my living room?

Anyway, these micro fliers could be used from anything like surveilance to hobby toys. It's a small world after all!

Oregon Scientific MP100: Another World's
Smallest
08/18/2004 08:38 AM

mp100_blue-thumb.JPG imageOregon Scientific is taking a stab at the "World's Smallest MP3 Player" title, but considering they don't throw a quarter or a finger or something into the picture Tech-Digest has (which can be added to the pictures on their barely-functional site for a total of... one) doesn't really tell us much. What we do know, though, is that the £90 (~$165) MP100 player has only 128MB of flash memory, so you pretty much wrinkle your nose at it, too, no matter how tiny it is.

There are other players being launched, too, including the MP130 with an SD/MMC expansion slot. (See, a little expansion never hurt no one.) And the MP140, not out for a few months, is listed as having a "transparent display." Barring marketing gobbledegook, that could be pretty interesting, considering that MP140 is only 6.6mm thick.

Cory Doctorow: A Welsh brewery in a 5'-square former toilet has reopened, brewing beer for the pub next door: it is the "world's smallest brewery."
Margaret and Mark Phillips, who own the Tynllidiart Arms and the brewery, said the beer had a secret recipe.

"The previous owner of the pub moved out two years ago and up until two weeks ago the pub was closed and the brewery was too," said Mr Phillips, who moved in just two weeks ago.

"We thought it would be nice to brew our own local beer and luckily we had a brewer living a few doors down who was able to help.

Epson's World's Lightest Flyer Still
Smallest, Awesome

Epson's World's Lightest Flyer Still
Smallest, Awesome
08/19/2004 07:35 AM

040818_m.jpg imageSee, I saw that Epson had released a new model of their "World's Lightest Micro-Flying Robot" - you know, the one that was a big deal late last year - and thought, "We've already talked about that. Nobody will be interested." I was wrong, according to the emails, though, so I guess I better mention it. The biggest difference between the old model and the new one is that the update appears to be running untethered, although it still flies with a bit of a wobble. It's too small to be used outside, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some implementation of these available for purchase soon. Although they have serious uses, too - investigating accident scenes, etc. - with the Bluetooth and built-in camera, it would make a perfect office toy, until you were fired for industrial espionage.

Also, could the girl in the video be any less excited?
