Pfeiffer says QuarkXPress Lags Behind
InDesign CS
02/01/2005 10:05 PMPfeiffer Consulting has conducted an
"independent, high-level
technology analysis of Adobe InDesign CS and QuarkXPress
6.x, in order to allow decision makers in the publishing industry
to evaluate the comparative strengths of both applications."
IT-Enquirer has interpreted that study (saving us 295 Euros if we are
willing to trust their summary) in
this article and has come to the conclusion:
"Stay
Away from QuarkXPress 6.5...Pfeiffer found frequent and reproducible
crashes, and serious reproducible dysfunctions of existing product
functionality. The problems were so severe that a system's data
integrity was in peril. Pfeiffer therefore warns against deploying
version 6.5 without checking if Quark has solved the problems found by
Pfeiffer."
I think the folks in the
QuarkXPress Commiseration Area
of our Forums could have saved both organizations a bit of time and
money as they have all experienced these issues first hand...these
issues and many others.
QuarkXPress Lags Behind InDesign CS? Well, DUH!

Curry cures Alzheimer's?
Curry cures Alzheimer's?
01/01/2005 12:50 PMMark Frauenfelder:
The pigment that makes curry yellow, curcumin, does a better job at
treating Alzheimer's than the majority of drugs being tested.
(Interestingly, India has one of the lowest Alzheimer rates in the
world.)
The new UCLA-Veterans Affairs study involving genetically
altered mice suggests that curcumin, the yellow pigment in curry
spice, inhibits the accumulation of destructive beta amyloids in the
brains of Alzheimer's patients and also breaks up existing
plaques.

Alzheimer's, Other Diseases Often
Mistaken (AP)
07/15/2004 05:30 AMAP - Ask anyone to name a brain disease that causes dementia and
eventually death, and the most likely answer you'll get is Alzheimer's
disease. Though that's one correct answer, it's not the only one. And
a group meeting this week is trying to increase medical and public
awareness for other degenerative brain syndromes that are as
misunderstood and underdiagnosed as they are destructive to victims
and families.

Then, in one of his unexplained flashes of clarity, he
told Debbie: "I don't want to have Alzheimer's." On Saturday, John
will be 57. Although he is in the end stage of
early-onset
Alzheimer's, he still enjoys simple pleasures: walking outdoors,
eating ice cream, listening to music. His wife, children and church
friends — some of whom have relatives with dementia — will gather
at the nursing home for a birthday party. They will honor the man John
once was, and the spirit that survives. And some will no doubt wonder
if they are bearing witness to their own futures.
Alzheimer's is
a disease that can create nurses and
chambermaids out of loved ones. Jim Broomall doesn't blame his
mother. It's not her fault. She can't help it. No one with Alzheimer's
can and caregivers must remember that, he says. "If you
don't, you'll go crazy".
Or maybe even die: home care for Alzheimer's patients
is a major health risk for the caregiver spouse. That's
the choice for the families of the Alzheimer's patients (4.5 million
of whom are Americans).
