Sigma's SD10 digital SLR

Sigma's SD10 digital SLR

Sigma's SD10 digital SLR 10/29/2003 01:14 AM

Updated version of Sigma's SD9 digital SLR camera. The 10.3 megapixel SD10 also uses Foveon's X3 sensor technology, which can capture red, green, and blue light with every pixel, unlike other digital camera sensors where each pixel can only record a specific color. The result is supposed to be enhanced sensitivity and improved color accuracy. Photography Blog has a roundup of news and reviews. Read - Digital Photography Review Read - PhotographyBlog...

Digital Photography Hacks: geek out with
your digital cam

Digital Photography Hacks: geek out with
your digital cam
05/26/2004 04:34 AM
I am no photographer, but ever since I bought my first Casio Exilim camera (I'm on my third now, and I can't recommend them enough -- small, light, easy and durable, I carry mine everywhere and always) I've found myself shooting nearly every day.

Not being a photog, I'm pretty pig-ignorant on subjects like focus, depth-of-field, ISO, and so forth.

I just scored O'Reilly's new Digital Photography Hacks, written by the inestimable Derrick Story, s geeek's geek and a photographer's photographer, whose work I've admired for years. Derrick's new book follows the form of all the O'Reilly Hacks books: 100 easy-to-digest tips and tricks for digital cams, aimed squarely at people like me, geeks who get computers but cameras not so much.

These hacks are just what I needed to start to get my head around more advanced phototaking. Passages like "The flow of traffic provides a great opportunity to add motion to your compositions. Automobiles are light-painting machines, and it's easy to put them to work for you" (emphasis mine) really did me in: automobiles are light-painting machines! Wow! Suddenly, the whole world looked different.

There are many many great hacks in this book, but my favorite is #47: Judge Image Sharpness From File Size. If you've taken a bunch of photos of the same subject and want to determine which one is sharpest, compare the file-size. Images that have more information will compress poorly, which means that the biggest files in your shoot are likely the sharpest. Keen. Link

Digital Natives vs. Digital Immigrants

Digital Natives vs. Digital Immigrants 09/02/2004 05:50 PM
Just as we were talking about how to bette r handle things like IM in the office, we come across Future Now pointing to an (unfortunately BugMeNot-required) article about the "wisdom" of "digital natives." Basically, by understanding that the younger generation has grown up with technology all around them and understands both the technology and the behavior skills needed function can get by better than "digital immigrants" who will always feel a bit foreign. Amusingly, the article notes the difference between terminology: "Blog, Wiki, RTS, Spawn, POS, Astroturf" vs "cross-functional cooperation, team-based management, and 360-degree feedback." Also, they view things in a different manner. Rather than being worried about "information overload," digital natives learned to thrive on it, and, if anything seem to have more problems when its cut off -- which may be misinterpreted as addiction. As the article notes, this doesn't mean handing over businesses to a younger generation, but realizing the differences in the way older and younger generations look at these things, and realizing what that will mean for markets going forward.

Sometimes Digital doesn't mean digital

Sometimes Digital doesn't mean digital 12/02/2003 01:24 AM
Someone must have failed to do some actual research, because Wired News has an article today about inexpensive digital cameras that includes one model that isn't digital at all. Despite its name, Kodak's new Plus Digital single-use camera actually uses traditional 35mm film, something they could have easily checked if they'd actually bothered to check the page on Kodak's website that they link to in the article. It is held vertically and uses a 2.5-inch articulated LCD that swivels upward and rotates 270 degrees. A hybrid recording mode lets users record up to five seconds of QVGA video before and three seconds after the full-resolution image is taken. The video and still image are stored as separate files. Data is recorded to Memory Stick Pro Duo media cards. The camera also features a 3x optical zoom lens, Sony InfoLithium rechargeable battery, and a USB cradle for connecting to a PC or Mac. Live-Shot dot com

Live-Shot dot com 01/02/2005 06:57 PM

Talk about colossally bad ideas... Live-Shot makes it possible to kill things with the click of a mouse, all from the comfort of your computer desk.

LIVE-SHOT is similar to a trip to the rifle range with one very notable exception. Everything is done through a computer and the internet.

Right now, all they offer is target shooting, but they hope to make available remote-controlled camera rifles hidden in blinds for mouse jockeys to lie in wait for live game to wander into range. Barbary Sheep, Blackbuck Antelope, wild hog, and other species will be available for shootin' on Live-Shot's Texas ranch. They'll even dress your kill out and have it stuffed & mounted for you. For a price, of course.

Gives a whole new meaning to the term "first person shooter." What's next? Pay-Per-Shot remote control snipers in war zones?
