Nokia unwraps the 7700

Nokia unwraps the 7700 10/29/2003 01:14 AM

Nokia announced the 7700, their first Series 90 cellphone, today in Nice. At first glance the phone, with its wedge-shaped design, reminds us of the N-Gage, but the 7700 is designed for a lot more than playing games. The 7700 has a large, 640x320 resolution, 65,000 color touchscreen which can be used for watching video and surfing the web, built-in Bluetooth, a VGA-quality digital camera, 64MB of RAM, and an integrated FM tuner. Nokia will also offer an attachment called the Nokia Streamer which will let the 7700 receive special digital TV broadcasts. Expect to hear a lot about this in the coming days and weeks. nokia-7700.jpg imageThe Nokia 7700, the Series 90 prototype phone with the touchscreen and looks of a stormtrooper dropping has been dropped from Nokia's lineup according to the company. Although Nokia's EVP Matti Alahuhta maintains that more Series 90 phones will be released in the near future (especially next year), the 7700 was likely too out there for Nokia to put their full weight behind -- remember, this was one of the last phones bearing the vestiges of Sidetalkin'. I'm disappointed, though; for all it's probably failure in the market, the 7700 was clearly something unique, and I would have liked to have played around with it, at least. Pre-production 7700s will still be used to showcase Series 90 features, though, so don't be too surprised to see the units still popping up here and there.

a51-7700.jpg imageAlienware machines are overpriced and over-hyped, but you've got to admit, when they go top-end they usually do it right. Jason Cross over at ExtremeTech reviews their latest desktop replacement laptop, the Area-51m 7700, and it's pretty impressive—as it should be, since it forgoes most laptop parts and actually uses desktop chips crammed inside its not-so-portable 12-pound chassis. What you get in the end is a laptop that should rarely leave your desk, but provides most of the functionality of a full-size PC. Look, it even comes with all the fans of a regular-sized PC.

10/29/2003 01:40 PM
We wrote yesterday that our initial reaction to Nokia's new 7700 cellphone was that it looked a lot like the N-Gage. We didn't realize how right we were. Our pal Rich Brome of PhoneScoop got confirmation from Nokia that just as with the N-Gage, to make a phone call with the 7700 you have to hold the thing up to your head at an awkard sideways angle (unless you want to use a headset). This bit of misguided industrial design has quickly turned out to be one of the most widely derided features of the N-Gage, even inspiring parody sites like SideTalkin.com. Nokia 7260
09/09/2004 09:00 AM

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.

Nokia 6630 12/31/2004 10:59 AM

On Malik likes his. I wonder if I can trade out my 7610 for a 6630? Charlie?

Here's Om's post....

It is hard for me to imagine that I am carrying around in my pocket a computer that is as powerful as my first generation Pentium powered AST desktop, I wrestled with back in 1995, typing out scintiallting stories about memory chip prices for Quick Nikkei News. It seemed breezy enough, running the now forgotten Windows 3.1. With some kicking around, the TCP/IP stack on it worked for me to get Internet access as well. Fast forward by ten years, and the new Nokia 6630 packs a mightier punch - a 200 MHz ARM 5 processor - in a small but lethal package. 6630_applications.jpgThe Nokia 6630 is based on Symbian OS. It is a tri-band phone for GSM 900/1800/1900, EDGE and WCDMA networks. Weighing 127 grams and measuring 110 x 60 x 20.6 mm, it is world’s smallest megapixel phone for GSM and WCDMA networks. It has everything you would normally want in a good smart-enough phone. Clearly, this is the best 3G phone on the market, especially given that how the others are so clunky and well ugly! It is light enough that sometimes I forget it is sitting in my pocket. (more…)

Wither the Television?

Wither the Television? 02/01/2005 09:08 PM

Am I the only one whose television and DVD player is getting neglected these days? Lately, I've taken to watching both TV shows and DVD movies exclusively on my computer.

I don't have a really great set-up either. My monitor is a Gateway VX900T — a 19-inch Trinitron that I bought (used) five years ago. I also have an old Altec Lansing speaker system with a subwoofer that's so old I have to Scotch tape the input jack into the speaker.

What I do have going for me is a couch in my office on which I can sit about five feet from the monitor. This set-up and proximity is almost perfect for watching TV and movies on the computer.

I just watched "Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow" on DVD (great, great movie, by the way). That film was shot in digital, high defintion, and the resolution on my monitor was absolutely astonishing. The scene where Dex is escaping from the island and the Ark is launching in the background was so detailed it left me slack-jawed.

Television is just as good. I don't have a TV capture card, but that doesn't matter because I tend to just watch certain shows faithfully which I download. I've spoken he re before about my tendency to watch North Shore (more on this on my personal site), and I get spoiled because the torrents I download are all ripped from hi-def sources. Hi-def on computer monitors is amazing, and it leaves me disappointed when I have to actually watch the show on TV during its time slot.

Consequently to all of this, my television gets less and less use these days. Now, all I need is a remote control.

The Whole Concept Of Television Is
Changing... Or Is It?

The Whole Concept Of Television Is
Changing... Or Is It?
11/13/2003 12:29 PM
Television hasn't really changed all that much over the past few decades, but a lot of things are happening in the space these days. People are increasingly interested in having a central digita l hub in their homes that will store and manage both television programs, and their own created content. The article points to a study done by the Internet Home Alliance (who isn't often shy about painting the picture they'd like to see for the future - which involves many of their member companies having lots of new products to sell). I don't think it's surprising that they found many people who claim they want a central digital video hub, but the actual implementation might not be so easy. Ignoring the whole broad cast flag issue, and how that might complicate this vision, such a device would need to work exceptionally well for it to gain traction. It's a pretty complex system, but would need to be easy to set up and easy to use, while still offering the functionality that people want. It's certainly possible, but it might take some time. At the same time, other studies are pointing out the fairly obvious fact that digital video recorders are going to change how television advertising works. Lots of people have been saying this for years, but the broadcast industry is finally coming to terms with it. Of course, they'll probably end up going the route of the recording and movie industries and make life more difficult for people, instead of embracing the new technology. Meanwhile, the NY Times is reporting that Sprint PCS is going to let people watch streaming TV on their mobile phones. At 2 frames per second. Two... Frames... Per... Second... That's not television. That's a bunch of still images, on a one inch screen - and knowing most streaming technology, they will probably be pretty blocky still images. Did I mention that it will also cost $10/month? Seems like a limited upside on that one. I'll probably have my home digital hub up and running before I'm watching TV on my mobile phone.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I haven't watched TV for over six months now, but I've become convinced that the television is a far more anti-social, intrusive, and evil device than a computer (networked or stand-alone).
