NYC mapping cellphone dead zones

NYC mapping cellphone dead zones

NYC mapping cellphone dead zones 10/29/2003 01:14 AM

New York City has started a campaign to identify all the "dead zones" where cellphone coverage is poor (or non-existent). Best of all, they plan to release the information on November 24th, the day cellphone number portability goes into effect, so New Yorkers thinking of switching carriers can see whether coverage might be better or worse in their part of town. Learning To Love The Dead Zones

Learning To Love The Dead Zones 06/11/2004 03:43 AM
People like to complain about wireless dead zones all the time, but for all the talk of ubiquitous wireless connections, there's something to be said for dead zones that keep you disconnected. While it does seem to make some people angry, there's something oddly refreshing about being forced out of contact for a while. The article linked above suggests that companies and schools will specifically build deadzones - but there's really no evidence that's true. In fact, everything suggests the opposite - where everyone will be connected everywhere they go. Of course, there's a simple solution if you need a deadzone: turn off your wireless devices or just leave them somewhere else.

Disney parks are no-fly zones

Disney parks are no-fly zones 03/19/2003 10:45 PM
The new Orange Alert aviation regs have created a no-fly-zone around Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
The new regulations in effect create a no-fly zone around Disney World in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Unless pilots are granted specific exemptions from air traffic controllers, no flights are allowed within a 3-mile radius around the parks or below 3,000 feet.

Government officials said the Disney restrictions are not based on any specific or new information, but rather stem from a general concern about those two locations as possible terror targets.

Counterterrorism officials said the Disney parks have come up in interviews with al Qaeda operatives. Pictures and information about the parks have been found during some terror sweeps overseas, they say...

Disney spokeswoman Leslie Goodman said the latest airspace restriction is nothing new and expressed concern the latest restriction is unnecessarily worrying visitors. She complained Disney's phones have been ringing off the hook with anxious vacationers calling.

So there's a real possible upside to all the terrornoia: I might get shorter lines when I visit Disneyland next. Lin k Discuss

Collaborative Mapping

Collaborative Mapping 01/07/2004 02:04 PM
Edward Mac Gillavry has a paper on collaborative mapping that comes at the idea from a different angle than does Matt Haughey's suggestion that someone combine a mapping system with a Slashdot-like system to do collaborative routing: Collaborative mapping is an initiative to collectively produce models of real-world locations online that people can then access and use to virtually annotate locations in space. Mac Gillavry points to two aspects of collaborative mapping: 1. Generating maps by mapping with your feet, so to speak. For example, at Waag.org, you can see maps of Amsterdam generated by aggregating data from people carrying...

Mapping the News

Mapping the News 08/03/2004 09:13 AM
newsisfree This is a beta of "News Maps" from NewsIsFree. The image, created by a Java applet, shows a "technology news map" of current event in the tech sphere. Here's how NewsIsFree describes the site:
NewsKnowledge and The Hive Group have joined forces to bring you News Maps, visual maps of the NewsIsFree headline database. News Maps allow you to quickly scan dozens of news articles and instantly understand what's being reported all over the world. Each square in the News Map is an article. You can obtain additional detail on each article by moving your mouse over it. You can read an article by clicking on it. The Hive Group's Honeycomb algorithm organizes news headlines by source. Size and Color information indicate article age and popularity. You can easily filter and rearrange you results to view articles that meet certain criteria, or that contain certain text.
This kind of mapping isn't an entirely new idea. And the potential, for now, seems greater than the achievement. But this is an intriguing approach to making the daily information flood a little less intimidating and a little more manageable. I'll be watching with interest. (Cross-posted to We the Media.)

Dead pixels instead of dead trees

Dead pixels instead of dead trees 12/22/2004 01:49 AM

I love books, I love browsing stacks, I love libraries, I love Powell's in Portland, I like collecting books, I always have a stack nearby to read, I love looking through picture books, and I love books even though I didn't really become much of a reader until the end of my college years (I never read for fun until then). Plunging into the Internet fed my book addiction further, as I had to read dozens of computer classics to get up to speed and stay ahead of the curve. Every computer desk I've had until recently was flanked by bookshelves loaded with titles.

Earlier this year, I remember hearing Cory Doctorow give a talk about how ebooks were going to rule the world and folks would abandon the printed page for the laptop screen. I thought it was a good talk, but I felt the thesis was a bit ahead of its time. There's really no comparison between curling up with a book and a blanket in front of a fireplace, versus trying to read thousands of words on a screen.

Last weekend I was doing some house cleaning and I kept finding stacks of books. A stack next to the reading chairs. A stack on the coffee table. A stack beside my bed. All these stacks contained books I bought in 2004, but never read. Some, I got halfway through, but even more I got maybe ten pages in. A few I never even cracked open.

When I think back to the last three books I enjoyed, they were all heard on my iPod, while on a road trip. I can't recall the last book I finished in my hands.

I'm going to take a holiday trip soon to a fairly remote location where there's not much to do besides read. I'm going to sit and read the only book I've wanted to read this year, and I have a feeling it might just be one of the last dead tree books I read for a long time.

As much as I didn't agree with Cory back during his E-tech talk, I'm finally realizing it's coming true in my own life. I read thousands of words everyday on my monitors and I rarely take time to read anything on the printed page, and there's no sign of reversal on that trend. The scariest thing for the bookfan inside me is that I don't think it's bad thing, either.

Long live the ebook. Long live the audiobook. So long, dead trees.
