doesn't support AAC and MP4, but at least it supports some form of

similar features, and there's also the

Avid buys Pinnacle for $462 million
03/22/2005 03:49 PMAvid Technology, the leading player in video and film editing tools,
has revealed it is to buy rival video-editing maker Pinnacle Systems
in a deal reported to be worth $462 million. The move is the latest in
a series of buy-outs in the video market, as Avid and Apple Computer
battle for the professional video high ground.
The purchase by Avid prices Pinnacle at a premium of 30 per cent above
its market value, and is based on a stock and cash deal. Under the
terms of the agreement, Avid says it will issue 0.0869 shares of Avid
and $1 in cash for each Pinnacle share. Avid says it expects to issue
around 6.2 million shares – around 15 per cent of its common stock.

Smoke Detector Considered The Pinnacle
Of Innovation
06/03/2004 12:07 PMThe details of how this study was conducted are not entirely clear,
but apparently, when asked, folks in the UK
consider the
smoke detector to be the top innovative gadget, beating out mobile
phones, microwave ovens and digital cameras. I keep looking for the
punchline about how this study was sponsored by a smoke detector
company, but can't find it. It's not that the good old smoke detector
isn't a useful gadget - it's just that it seems strange that so many
people would pick it as the most innovative. The article quotes
people saying that this shows how much the Brits value practicality,
but it makes me wonder if the Brits are having trouble filling out
surveys properly - or if they just tend to set themselves on fire too
often.

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one
besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now
Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch
Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to
the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's
the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the
company used them as weapons against free and open source software
projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome
Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or
maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has
truly seen the open source light?

MOSIX Cluster Management 1.13.1 for
Linux 2.4.30 (Linux 2.4 branch)
04/07/2005 10:26 AMMOSIX is a management system that allows a cluster
of x86 nodes to perform like a parallel computer.
It is particularly suitable to run intensive
computing and massive I/O applications. In a MOSIX
system there is no need to modify applications,
link them with any library, or even assign
processes to different nodes. It is done
automatically, just "fork and forget", like in an
SMP system. MOSIX is geared toward improved
performance, overhead-free scalability and
ease-of-use.
