The building I work in does not receive Radio receptions real good. The guys and I in the office like to listen to a particular radio show and we knocked our heads together for a while trying to figure out how to improve the reception. Fixing the reception problem proved to be impossible but we did find a geeks way to fix the problem.

I purchased Replay Radio and set it up at home to record the network stream of the program. It saves the recorded stream in MP3 format every 30 minutes and dumps it in a directory that I have mapped to a FTP server. I have a standard FTP client running on my desktop that downloads the MP3 to my laptop which is connected to the network and we load the MP3 up and listen to the program time delay.

My work does not allow for streaming audio. So to avoid confusion I asked permission to do this via our IT department and promised to keep the file sizes under control. They thought it was cool and gave the thumbs up. It worked out so well that several departments do the same thing and we have 2-3 national talk radio programs to listen to each day. Albeit time delay but it works. [Replay Radio]

" Replay Radio is an incredibly easy way to record radio broadcasts. It's like a "TiVo™ DVR" for the radio. Just pick your favorite radio show, or select a station and a time range, and Replay Radio records it for you. Hundreds of shows and stations are pre-programmed, making recording as easy as point and click."

BBC Internet Radio Player

BBC Internet Radio Player 02/05/2005 09:29 PM
BBC Internet Radio Player
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/

The BBC re-launches its Internet Radio Player to make almost every BBC Radio programme available live and on-demand for seven days after broadcast, creating a massive, ever-changing library of music, talk shows, dramas and documentaries. Latest figures show more than 10 million hours of BBC radio is consumed online per month and, from 25 January, the new Radio Player will offer 500 extra hours of programming and offer a range of new features. The re-launch puts audiences in control of their listening, allowing them to listen at convenient times, control their schedules and fast-forward through programmes while exposing them to new shows - and perhaps whole networks - they otherwise wouldn't come across. The new Player provides all the programmes and benefits of the current model - which makes many of the BBC's radio programmes available online - but includes over 80 more programmes, making virtually all of the BBC's national radio output available on-demand via the Internet. DesignFRONT Acrylic Radio and CD Player

DesignFRONT Acrylic Radio and CD Player 07/09/2004 10:22 AM

frontdesign_radio.jpg image

Our pal Josh Rubin points out some new stuff from DesignFRONT (or FRONT Design -- we can't keep up with these fancy Swedes), including these two lovely pieces of electronics work that appear to be set in hard acrylic. The left one is a regular stereo receiver, and the right is a CD player that is reminiscent of the speakers we showed you a couple of months back. I bet they'd look fantastic all of a set.

Is there anything in the world better than a group of foxy Swedish ladies making beautiful electronics? That isn't Schedule 1 already?

It's nice to be able to listen to a net radio station directly on your computer. But wouldn't it be great if you could record it on your hard disk? Better yet, what if you could schedule recordings, so you don't miss your favourite programmes? Using VLC Player and a simple batch file you can turn your computer into a radio recorder.

RePlay suit ends

RePlay suit ends 01/16/2004 11:28 AM

EFF's ReplayTV suit ends. About a year and a half ago, the EFF along with five plantiffs (including Craig from Craigslist.org) brought about a suit against Hollywood studios in order to defend their rights to continue using ReplayTV, after the same companies sued ReplayTV... [PVRblog]

Wow! Bummer. I've been waiting years for a precedent case to establish fair use rights with TV shows and recorded movies.

Now we're back to square one.

But a giant thanks goes out to Craig Newmark and the EFF.

Bushnell Instant Replay Binoculars

Bushnell Instant Replay Binoculars

binoculars_instrep.jpg imageSomeday someone is going to get one of these digital camera/binocular hybrids right and have a hit product on their hands, but manufacturers' continual insistance to make the camera lens seperate from the binoculars really futzes up what could otherwise be a fantastic product. Take these Bushnell Instant Replay binocs, for instance, as reviewed by KC's David Twiddy. It's not a cheapo device - Bushnell is a major binocular brand - but it still doesn't take images of what you're actually seeing through the binoculars (and has a crappy shutter speed, too, it sounds like), so no matter how many flip-up LCD screens and Compact Flash slots it has, it's still fundamentally flawed. (Thanks, JP!)

Now Software and Parliant Corp. have announced that the former's Now Up-to-Date & Contact calendar/address book tool and the latter's PhoneValet Message Center are now integrated. The combined solution won a Best of Show award at Macworld Conference & Expo Boston, which wraps up on Thursday. With both applications working together, an incoming call will trigger PhoneValet to show the Caller ID information on your Mac's display while Now Up-to-Date opens that person's record, allowing you to record notes about the conversation and keep track of the number of calls placed by him. The Remote Activity List feature allows you to call your phone, enter a password and have PhoneValet read your day's events from Now Up-to-Date. This fall, Now Software expects to make available integrated dialing, which will automatically call someone when you click the phone icon in their Now Up-to-Date record.
