Kids' craphoundery compromised by

Kids' craphoundery compromised by
commercialism
01/02/2004 05:58 AM
Fiona Romeo writes about a BBC program about children and collecting, and the way that the commercialization of collectibles has changed the experience of collecting for kids.
Finkel argued that the commercialisation of collecting, through products like Pokémon cards, has devalued the experience: "What's really exciting about collecting is looking for things that you can't find when you want them. All you need to find [mass market collectibles] is the money. The real thrill is lost."

And, that these products might be branded as 'limited edition' or 'rare' but this is manipulated rather than spontaneous. I noticed this recently in Forbidden Planet, which has lucky-dip style vending machines for pocket-money priced toys, and trading cards on the counter. Reading both the pitches and disclaimers reminded me more of gambling than collecting.

Coloring books stifle kids' creativity?

Coloring books stifle kids' creativity? 04/09/2004 04:11 PM

At a dinner party last night hosted by an artist her daughters shared tales of the severity of their upbringing.  No sugared cereal.  No gun toys.  No coloring books because they stifle creativity; kids should draw freehand.  It was just like our family, I responded!  We were always envious of our cousins who got to eat Fruit Loops and enjoyed coloring books to their hearts' content.

How did the experiment work out in our family?  My cousin Douglas, raised on a steady diet of coloring books, got his first full-time job at Walt Disney as a character animator.  His credits include Scar in the Lion King, the Hunchback in Hunchback of Notre Dame, etc.  I, by contrast, used the superior drawing skills and creativity acquired in a coloring book-free childhood to become... a computer programmer.

[Where is Doug now you might ask?  He would be working at Disney still if the executives had not looted $2 billion from the company into their personal checking accounts when the economy was booming.  As soon as the economy stopped booming, however, the executives were shocked--shocked!--to discover how depleted the corporate checking account was.  So they said "We can't afford to do animation in Los Angeles anymore" and shut down the studio founded by Walt Disney himself in 1923.  Doug moved up north to Pixar.]

Is It Illegal To Listen In On Your Kids'
Phone Calls?

Is It Illegal To Listen In On Your Kids'
Phone Calls?
12/22/2004 01:16 AM
As various internet service providers and third party software firms are pushing software on parents that lets them eavesdrop on their kids' surfing habits, parents might want to be aware of a recent court ruling up in Washington state. The ruling didn't focus on the internet, but found that a mother who listened in on her daughter's phone call broke wiretap laws. The article, written for a Connecticut newspaper, then goes on to discuss whether or not the same ruling would apply in that state -- and it's a bit tricky. Part of the rationale for the ruling in Washington is that state wiretap laws require both parties to agree to be recorded. Connecticut (and most other states) only have a one person requirement -- but in the case where a parent is eavesdropping, the question then becomes whether or not they, as a legal guardian, have the right to give the consent to be wiretapped for their kid. Of course, this is just one of the many reasons why kids get mobile phones. However, with internet access, a similar question arises, but not many seem to have dealt with it. It's likely that similar cases will start to show up when people feel their privacy is violated by their parents spying on their online activities. Of course, some might point out that talking to your kids and trying to build a trusting relationship (not always easy, of course) might be a better way to keep them out of trouble than spying on them.

Borribles: fine, dark English kids'
trilogy

Michael de Larrabeiti's classic children's trilogy, "The Borribles," is back in print in an omnibus edition incorporating all three volumes of the story. "Borribles" is not only one of the finest children's adventure stories ever penned, it's also an epic love poem to London, in the same way that China Mieville's King Rat is -- dark and glorying in the decadent, intestinal twistings and turnings of London's sooty, crowded, vibrant streets. I've just started re-reading the trilogy, and I'm astonished anew at how good this is. Link

The obesity racket

The obesity racket 05/01/2004 12:48 AM
The Guardian has recently published excerpts from a new book by Paul Campos entitled The Obesity Myth. The book argues that the claim so often repeated by your TV, that two thirds of the population of the United States is "overweight" or "obese," is an elaborate hoax designed to move the product. From the perspective of a profit-maximising medical and pharmaceutical industry, the ideal disease would be one that never killed those who suffered from it, that could not be treated effectively, and that doctors and their patients would nevertheless insist on treating anyway.

USATODAY.com - Having an employed mom leads college-age men to expect that they'll be doing more child care than the sons of homemakers, who assume that their wives will take the lead in tending to the nest. It's just the opposite for daughters: If their mothers work, they plan to spend less time with their kids than do women whose moms stay home, according to an online survey released at the end of July.
