Behind four Linux community sites

Behind four Linux community sites 06/03/2004 08:35 AM

In our recent overview of Linux community sites we highlighted several active sites that offered news, reviews, commentary, and Linux information. We thought an interesting followup would be to ask their administrators about the technology they use to get online.

This is a GrokNews Entry: (what is grok?)

You see it in headlines. It's quoted in the wires like some monotheistic Mel Gibson filled with religious fervor. But where is The Linux Community? Alive and well in forum-based community Web sites.

Newsforge is featuring a new and interesting article that quizzes administrators about the technology they use to get online. The good news - Site administrators from popular linux community sites - LinuxForum.com, JustLinux.com, LinuxPlanet, LinuxQuestions.org - have PHP as part of their foundation. Also interesting to note is their preference of PHP-powered forum software - phpBB, vBulettin, Invision Powerboard. Enjoy the full article.

A splintering Linux community

A splintering Linux community 06/12/2004 04:56 AM
We now have two distinct classes of Linux users whose interests are not the same, and perhaps we have more than that if we want to talk about people who think of software in political rather than pragmatic terms. Can these factions work together, or will tensions between them eventually kill the free software and open source movements?

To: Steve Odland, President and CEO of AutoZone The Linux community, and the wider open-source software movement of which it is a part, learned this morning that SCO is suing AutoZone, Inc. (and DaimlerChrysler Corp.) over alleged IP violations related to its move from SCO Unix to Linux. We regret that you have become the latest victim in the campaign of barratry, fraud, and stock-kiting that SCO has been waging. We want you to know that you are not alone, and that you have in fact just made a great many friends.

SCO is celebrating the end of one year and the start of the next with a new twist in its long, ever-changing, and never substantiated legal saber-rattling against IBM and all things Linux. In this latest turn, they have embraced the DMCA, claiming in a news release today that "Distribution of the copyrighted ABI code, or binary code compiled using the ABI code, with copyright management information deleted or altered, violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act codified by Congress at 17 U.S.C. §1202. DMCA liability extends to those who have reasonable grounds to know that a distribution (or re-distribution as required by the GPL) of the altered code or copyright information will induce, enable, facilitate, or conceal an infringement of any right under the DMCA."

And Here's What the Community Did 03/19/2003 10:27 PM

And Here's What the Community Did

Well not only was I busy this weekend but others were too.  Here are some of the highlights:

The FurryGoat (I love that name) tells you how to add Feedster to Internet Explorer's search options using TweakUI.  [_Go_]

Feedster is increasingly being added as an option right next to the "Google It" links on blogs.  That's high praise.  Here are some examples:

  • FurryGoat
  • BunkoSquad (thanks Sooz!)
  • Vicky (a cool multi search engine interface)
  • (If you're adding Feedster to your blog like this, drop us a line and we'll link to you / add you to a list of "Blogs Supporting Feedster" that's coming out soon)

Ben Meadowcraft of the Mozilla Mycroft project is working on adding Feedster support to Mozilla's ability to drive Apple's Sherlock.  I'm not 100% sure on the status of this since I haven't personally tested it but if you want the .src and .png files for it drop me a line.  If Ben says its ok, I'll link to them as well.

The Amazing US contributed a really nice CSS design for our results that while we haven't had time to implement yet is coming.  Thanks!

I'm sure there's more going that I'm missing but this is a blog.  There's always more!

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM
Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the company used them as weapons against free and open source software projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has truly seen the open source light?

What do you if you're in an unchartered area with no reasonable law enforcement, and criminals are running rampant? You convince everyone to become the "enforcement" arm and find someone rich enough to pay them to help fight crime. Microsoft can't be bothered to fix a few of the holes in their programs that make it incredibly easy to pass on viruses, so instead, they're setting aside $5 million for anti-virus bounty hunters who can track down anyone responsible for worms, trojan horses or viruses. The rewards will be given out in $250,000 wads of cash from Bill Gates wallet increments. So, now, who's going to round up an anti-virus posse?
