FlipstartHQ Relaunches as HandtopHQ

FlipstartHQ Relaunches as HandtopHQ 06/03/2004 07:09 AM

FlipstartHQ has asked me to pass along the word that they've expanded their focus to now include the OQO, Sony U50/70 and more as they rebrand themselves as 'HandtopHQ,' a site dedicated to the various upcoming handheld computers that run desktop OSes. It's a nice looking site. If you have any interest in the Flipstart and OQO (and who doesn't at least have a passing interest?) you should give them a gander.

The Antelope arrives

The Antelope arrives 10/29/2003 02:17 AM
Gosh, we remember when the Antelope Modular Computing Core was just vaporware, way back in the halcyon days of late 2002. But despite all the haters who said it'd never come out, the Antelope MCC has arrived. About the size of a deck of cards, the MCC is a tiny 1GHz computer with 256MB of RAM and a 10 or 15GB hard drive that runs a full version of Windows XP. The idea is that the core -- which by the way, costs $4,000 -- pops into a docking station with a screen and keyboard if you want to use it like a desktop, or into a smaller PDA-type shell if you need something more portable. Antelope: Still Alive, I Guess

Antelope: Still Alive, I Guess 08/02/2004 12:02 PM

news-ant-2.jpg imageHandtops has nice overview of the Antelope MCC, the 'modular computing core' computer that uses swappable cores to allow you to move you environment from a desktop dock to a handheld shell computer, enabling a complete environment migration if you need to move on the go. And that would be great and all if Antelope didn't completely shit themselves with the price -- we're talking around $4,000 to buy all the pieces to take advantage of it -- and that's without a lot of normal features like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth built in.

They claim to be for the business segment, and that's fine, but if you're going to charge a fully-premium price for something, you better have an all-around premium product.

The Antelope has been out for almost a year, but it's been at least that long since we've vented our impotent rage at it, so there you go.

FlipStartPC HQ dug up a bunch of information about the FlipStartPC, including information about the LID module (the external LCD screen that will allow you to check email even when the unit is in low-power suspend) and how some of the keys/key combinations will work. fs2-new.jpg imageHandtops has a change-by-change analysis of the tweaks Vulcan has made to its Flipstart PC, comparing a new insider picture against the shown on the company's web site. None of the changes are exactly profound, but if you're it does show two things about the Flipstart: Vulcan isn't afraid to make changes to improve its design, and we're quite a ways away from seeing the FlipStart hit the shelves (the company says Q1 2005).

Solaris 72

Solaris 72 12/17/2004 06:37 PM
I see via Daniel Price that build 72 of Solaris 10 is posted. The kernel geeks’ hearts will beat faster over the AMD64 support, but what I think is also newsworthy is that Solaris comes with StarOffice (as in Sun’s souped-up version of OpenOffice) on-board. OK, here’s my chance to get a late feature request in: along with a full-function office suite, how about a C compiler? [Update: Request granted!]

GNU/Solaris?

GNU/Solaris? 04/04/2005 04:07 PM
Solaris engineer Eric Boutilier has been running a series entitled “Unix from Scratch” (latest installment here; hey Eric, you need a table of contents). What’s at the end of the road Eric’s heading down is “GNU/Solaris”; a distro that does what Linux does, but has the Solaris kernel and management goodies; see his posts here and here. If I understand things correctly, once OpenSolaris ships, anyone with the energy and skill can just go and build that distro, no permissions required. I think Sun should do it, and then support it. Obviously, we can’t weaken Solaris Classic because our customers depend on it and furthermore we make money supporting it; but GNU/Solaris would be a darn nice product, and a nice new line of business.
