I'm here by Google's Headquarters in Mountain View again. Rumor is that Google's getting ready for an IPO. Of course, as a real journalist, I wouldn't try to spread such unsubstantiated speculation without investigating further. Good thing I'm not a real journalist. This website may contain information which is forward-looking and involves risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from those reflected in the forward-looking statements....

This toolbox assists the XML content author and developer working with the new XML features of Word 2003. The Word XML Toolbox requires that .NET Programmability Support is enabled. For .NET Programmability Support to be installed during the Office 2003 setup, the PIAs require the .NET Framework 1.1 already be installed. It is recommended that you install the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 before you install Microsoft Office 2003. With the .NET Framework 1.1 already installed, a complete installation of Office 2003 will install all of the PIAs.

PHP 5 Hits The Street

PHP 5 Hits The Street 07/14/2004 10:09 AM

PHP version 5.0.0 has now officially been released, bringing a large number of long-overdue changes to PHP.

  • The Zend Engine II with a new object model and dozens of new features.
  • XML support has been completely redone in PHP 5, all extensions are now focused around the excellent libxml2 library (http://www.xmlsoft.org/).
  • A new SimpleXML extension for easily accessing and manipulating XML as
PHP objects. It can also interface with the DOM extension and vice-versa.

  • A brand new built-in SOAP extension for interoperability with Web Services.

  • A new MySQL extension named MySQLi for developers using MySQL 4.1 and later.
This new extension includes an object-oriented interface in addition to
a traditional interface; as well as support for many of MySQL's new features,
    such as prepared statements.

  • SQLite has been bundled with PHP. For more information on SQLite,
    please visit their website.

  • Streams have been greatly improved, including the ability to access
    low-level socket operations on streams.

  • And lots more...

The biggest improvements are the chan ges to Zend, the core of PHP, that makes PHP a full-fledged OO language now. Features like private, static, abstract, and final methods, as well as the option to (somewhat) strongly type variables, mean that PHP can now be used to build serious object models. When using OO techniques in PHP 4, I tended to run into the barriers caused by these missing features, and it always felt like the language was trying to push me into writing spaghetti code. Sadly, still no schema support.

The street where journalism ends

The street where journalism ends 02/01/2005 09:09 PM
Bernard Weinraub, former entertainment reporter for The New York Times, writes about what it's like to be a journalist at Hollywood and Vine. The basic lesson seems to be that you can't fully stand apart from the world about which you're reporting. Hollywood, despite its excesses, does not seem to be a special case: Reporters embedded in the financial world, DC or in a foreign capital must face the same situation, albeit with fewer Hummers and tiaras in view. Access is the currency and humans remain human. Too bad Weinraub wasn't writing a blog during all those years. We would...

I've been alluding to some sort of exciting announcement for at least a week now, but every time I think I'm going to make it, something else comes up, and it keeps getting delayed.

So I guess I should just make the announcement, and go back to folding my clothes.

(Totally random aside: even though I'm married and have two stepkids, I still do laundry like a bachelor. About once every two weeks, my clothes will spill out of the hamper, and I'll hear Anne call, "Wil?" from the bedroom.

Excitedly expecting some Skyrockets in Flight, I'll race back there, only to find her standing near the hamper, one hand on her hip, the other pointing at the mass of clothes, as she gives me The Look.

My wife is the most patient and wonderful woman on the planet.)
