Market Disruption Metrics

Market Disruption Metrics 07/24/2004 09:57 AM
Halliburton's KBR deathtoll in Iraq reaches 42 people (out of 24,000 + employees).  Today, the CEO (general director) of the state owned Al-Mansour construction was taken hostage. Global guerrillas are working on breaking (or distorting) the market for construction and transportation services (in addition to electricity and oil services/production). So far, I would rate the effort a ~5 out of 10 in effectiveness in this area (they are getting better quickly due to networked/stigmergic learning and market reinforcement -- I wouldn't be surprised if they are 8/10 by the end of the year since much of the damage is cumulative).

Formalizing disruption metrics for these markets would be useful.  Of course, the DoD is focused on bodycounts (despite claims to the contrary), when metrics like this are much more useful as a means of measuring progress or failure.

The Ongoing Disruption Of MySQL

The Ongoing Disruption Of MySQL 07/12/2004 05:44 PM
Earlier this year, we noted that mySQL was quickly becoming a disru ptive force for traditional database companies, even though those companies insisted they didn't really compete with the cheaper (and, in some cases, free) open source database. However, here's another story, pointing out that not only did mySQL swipe a deal from Oracle at SABRE, but that Oracle is getting increasingly worried about the company. While naysayers point out that, from a revenue perspective, mySQL has a tiny portion of the market, that's a huge mistake. Considering that mySQL is redefining the market, and shrinking the overall revenue, anyone judging this contest on revenue alone isn't going to get very far.

A US court ruling that Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser infringes a patent owned by a one-man firm will disrupt the entire web, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) warns. Going in to bat for Microsoft and "all users that depend on the web every day", W3C director and web pioneer Tim Berners-Lee says the patent is invalid due to "prior art". He says the court decision will cause "substantial economic and technical damage" to web users and developers.

En route from San Jose to Phoenix, I was told by a Transportation Security Agency (TSA) screener about a ban on lighters (cough) starting April 14th, but the book allowance has been cut from 4 to 2...

I must highlight that this could be bad information and hearsay. I can't confirm this with the DHS or TSA prohibited items list. However, the TSA list notes it's own inaccuracy -- and the discretion of the screener to interpret policy...
