Why Google's E-Mail Service Could be
Evil
04/09/2004 04:00 PMJohn Gilmore deconstructs the terms of service
of GMail, Google's upcoming e-mail operation. The problems are worse
than I'd imagined.
Anyone who cares one iota for privacy should not sign up unless these
terms of service (which are, to be fair, only in draft form now) are
changed in overwhelmingly more pro-privacy ways.
Cory Doctorow suggests people send a friendly e-mail to gmail-feedback@google.com.
Maybe that will help. But the fact that Google could come up with even
a draft this awful is disturbing, to put it mildly.

06/21/2004 10:39 AMIt pains me to watch people scroll through their e-mail queues, like
rummagers through cluttered attics, in search of a particular message.
I know better. For my personal e-mail I use a year-old program called
Bloomba that's been called the Google of e-mail. Version 2.0 is out
this week and adds calendars, which are also searchable. If you don't
save e-mails, or you never need to go back and consult a saved
message, or your memory is photographic, Bloomba's not for you. It's
for e-mail swimmers who left the shallows long ago.

e-mails, by blocking attachments, scripts, images and spamming
techniques before they reach the Inbox folder. Viruses aren't the only
reason to be concerned about HTML email. Spammers use email bugs,
scripts and images hidden in the HTML to track anyone who opens their
email. E-mail Sentinel Pro stops spammers from verifying an address.

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail
05/26/2004 01:35 PMLast month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by
a California politician to create a law that would
ban
Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely
optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including
those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to
explain how email works, and have convinced her to
tone down
the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the
anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In
other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how
pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face
by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a
bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the
content of your emails to put in advertising.

05/18/2004 04:38 PMApparently "kicking it up a notch", Gmail now indicates that users

Gmail in April 2004, we've been focused on improving the service,
relying on our users to spread the word and invite others to try it
out. The response has been great, and now we're ready for some more

EFF on Gmail
EFF on Gmail
04/10/2004 03:46 AMOn EFF's Deep Links blog, some preliminary analysis of Google's Gmail
terms-of-service:
"People are entitled to know what kind of information Google will pull
from email, whether or not it logs this information, and for how
long," said EFF's Kevin Bankston. "Can your Gmail address or any other
personal identifier be linked to those logs, or to your Google search
history?"
"Gmail's privacy policy states that 'Google welcomes feedback on this
document and policy as the Gmail service is currently in an early
testing stage.' While that's a nice sentiment, we can't give
meaningful feedback until we have all the facts."
The remedy to the situation is obvious: Google needs to let us all
know precisely what the privacy/convenience trade-off is for using
Gmail, and soon.

Getting your gmail on
Getting your gmail on
06/17/2004 07:39 PMIs there any way to specify your default email app as a website in
a Windows XP system? Currently, my office workstation has an ancient
copy of Eudora I haven't used in years, but whenever I need to email
someone from my PC (I do all my email on a powerbook), I have to
copy/paste addresses by hand and use my mac or use Gmail.
It seems like there should be a way to tell firefox my default
email app isn't an app, but is instead gmail.google.com. Anyone that
knows of a way can have an invite to gmail. Or anyone that just wants
an invite can also email me and we can have this problem together.
Just ping me and I'll invite you

Gaming Gmail Ads
Gaming Gmail Ads
05/06/2004 02:28 PMOh, those crazy unintended consequences. TheRegister is pointing out
that the contextual advertising aspect of Gmail may lead to
some
interesting business opportunities. For example, you could try to
buy up the keywords around your competitor (or, better yet, if you can
figure it out, their standard "signature" file in emails) and
guarantee that any emails they send out come complete with
advertisements for your company. Even more sneaky, they pick up on
Karl
Auerbach's suggestion that a company would process
outgoing
email to add to it certain keywords to guarantee certain
advertisements would show up within Gmail. This seems a bit
far-fetched, and I doubt it would be all that effective - either in
getting the right ads to show in Gmail or in being a worthwhile
endeavor for advertisers. I do think, however, that the issue of
competitors' ads showing up in email may upset people much more.
