Apple Continues Their Program To Hook
Students With Free iPods
07/20/2004 02:45 AM
Hot off the severely overhyped announcement concerning the latest iPod models (er... honestly, they look pretty similar to the old ones) Slashdot has the story that Duke University is giving away "free" iPods to incoming freshman (which won't make the upperclassmen happy, but what can you do?). The "free" is a bit of a misdirection, because most people attending Duke are paying an awful lot of money for the privilege, and I'm sure a slight tuition bump to pay for the iPod will mostly go unnoticed. Of course, this isn't the first time this has been done. Last year we wrote about students at Georgia College & State University receivi ng iPods donated by Apple. While both cases talked about the educational uses of such devices, it's more likely an attempt by Apple to get people hooked early, so when they make big announcements about iPods that really don't seem all that different than the last ones, these kids have to go out and spend their money on them. It's the same strategy Napster is using in signing up colleges.

A while ago the display on my powerbook started to come loose. No, it is not falling off, but it's tilting backwards all the time. Bang! Slam! Smack! Down in the table it goes. Really Bloody Frustrating. I want it fixed. Back in the days I could take a Powerbook 5300 apart and put it together again in just over no time. Except for the displays. The displays were always a pain. Gustav told me there's no way to...

Napster targets Apple with new service

Napster targets Apple with new service 02/05/2005 10:11 PM
Napster on Thursday introduced the latest version of its music downloading software, Napster To Go, that lets users download unlimited songs for a monthly fee. The new service is geared toward portable digital music device owners allowing subscribers to access any tracks for $14.95 per month. Taking aim at Apple with the new $30 million advertising campaign, Napster To Go advertising will focus on its compatibility on several types of digital music music players and unlimited access to all songs for a monthly fee. According to Reuters, Napster's promotion will feature a Super Bowl television spot that will ask fans to compare the costs of spending $10,000 to buy 10,000 songs from the iTunes Music Store that can be played on an iPod to Napster's per month unlimited download service to carry songs from a catalog of over a million tracks on Napster-compatible players, that will include players from Creative Technology, Dell, and Reigncom, for $14.95. "Napster To Go provides infinitely greater value is much more exciting than the iTunes pay-per-download model," Napster chairman and CEO Chris Gorog said.

Apple hired someone who used to work for the XBox Live subscription service, so AppleInsider are speculating that Apple is considering a subscription model for the iTunes music store. I think it's more likely she's working on the Apple iFlix DVD subscription service (Codename "Celluloid"). With the DVD subscription service you "rent" movies in H.264 format (Apple FAQ, Wikipedia) via an iTunes like program and play them on your Mac Mini in your living room. You can have 4 movies...

03/13/2003 10:22 AM

Apple plans to debut an on-line music service for iPod users:

The new service, developed by Apple Computer, offers Macintosh users many of the same capabilities that are already available from services previously endorsed by the labels. But the Apple offering won over music executives because it makes buying and downloading music as simple and nontechnical as buying a book from Amazon.com, one source said.

``This is exactly what the music industry has been waiting for,'' said one person familiar with the negotiations between the Cupertino computer maker and the labels. ``It's hip. It's quick. It's easy. If people on the Internet are actually interested in buying music, not just stealing it, this is the answer.''

Cool.
