Freight trains in the sky (a.k.a. Fun
with Air Traffic Control)
04/09/2004 04:11 PMA post for airplane nerds only...
Mountains climbing nearly to 12,000' separate the Los Angeles basin
from the Palm Springs and Joshua Tree area. A layer of clouds
between 4000' and 6000' covered all of the Los Angeles airports.
Thus it was necessary to proceed from Sedona into Los Angeles on an
Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) clearance. The minimum enroute
altitude on the direct airway from Twentynine Palms into LA is 13,500'
due to the fact that this airway goes straight over some of the
tallest peaks. I was flying along at 14,000', breathing bottled
oxygen, and got called by ATC: "Fly heading 230 for a
train."
I banked the airplane and looked down wondering what kind of
monster freight train they might have out West that would require an
airplane at 14,000' to adjust its course.
Then I realized that perhaps the call was "Flying heading 230 for
terrain."

Traffic Control Super Script implements traffic
shaping for IP traffic passing through a
NAT/bridge box with a single configuration file
with one line per host. It can manage bandwidth to
user-specified speeds based on the u32 classifier,
and can identify traffic by source, destination,
source and destination port, protocol, and ToS
field. It then limits the rate of connection in
either a single or a bidirectional fashion.

Code cleanups.

Adaptive Cruise Control May Solve
Traffic Jams
Adaptive Cruise Control May Solve
Traffic Jams
07/30/2004 03:51 PMMore and more luxury cars these days are coming with adaptive cruise
control -- which is mainly considered a safety feature. The idea is
that if you're getting too close to the car in front of you, your car
automatically begins to slow down, avoiding the possibility of an
accident. However, one of the nice "unintended benefits" of such
systems is they may
create much more efficient traffic
flow. Apparently, if just 20% of the cars on the road had such
systems on a normal highway, most traffic jams would simply go away.
The article goes into details on how this works, but the basic summary
is that most drivers are either idiots or err on the side of caution
by braking too hard when someone in front of them brakes, leading to a
chain reaction that causes the slow down. With a computer braking
more appropriately, the chain reaction has a much smaller impact,
allowing traffic flow to continue smoothly. Yet another situation
where a technology designed for one purpose, actually has a very
useful alternative benefit.

Control your computer with your brain?
Control your computer with your brain?
03/25/2005 01:28 AMCyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems, a company based in Foxborough,
MA, has developed software to enable quadriplegics to use computers as
well as any enable-bodied person. The hardware, called BrainGate,
requires a silicon chip to be placed on the motor functions of the
brain that control arms and legs, and a hole to be drilled in to the
skull to allow a plug to interface with the chip and computer.
Available on normal desktop computers, this hardware will allow
quadriplegics to surf the 'Net, write e-mails, and even play video
games as well as the next person, and all by simply thinking the
action.
The beginning of The Matrix, or just the greatest step in technology
ever conceived? Either way, the future is here.
