Micro-content publishing and Kottke.org

Micro-content publishing and Kottke.org 06/06/2005 12:13 AM

Though he never mentions micro-content, micro-formats or structured blogging - Jason Kottke is clearly doing all three now - officially over at Kottke.org.

At first glance at his blog, you see seperate blog posts that are lists of links, reviews, ratngs lists, QotD (quotes of the day) or plain old vanilla blog posts.

Jason has just added a drop-down to filter ONLY one kind of stuff - at a time, while also intermixing into this drop-down menu - a few hard wired RSS feeds.

Why is this significant? Cause an A-List blogger is showing how he can take all these different kind of blog posts and categorize them and enable blog vuewers to easily parse through specific kinds of contet.

No mention of sharing his posts with others (except through the time honored tradition of search engine spidering) - but I bet that if we HAD soem standardized schemas - Jason would support them.

Online Publishing Discussion List

Online Publishing Discussion List 04/09/2004 04:02 PM

Marketing Wonk has changed their name (again) to MarketingVox. Apparently "wonk" has a negative connotation to some people. As part of the change, the "I-" series of discussion lists are being changed to reflect the new branding. So I-Sales becomes MarketingVox Commerce and the other lists have similar changes. I-Blog, the list I moderate, not only has a new name, but a new editorial focus as well. Rather than just discussing blogs in business, we’re now talking about all sorts of online publishing. I-Blog is now MarketingVox Publishing.

If you have a question about CMSs, want to talk about the best content strategies to increase sales leads, or are wondering about the changing business model for online newspapers, MV|Publishing is the place to do it.

Shirky: stupid (c) laws block me from publishing own work online

Clay Shirky tells Boing Boing:

Welcome to the Copyfight. So, at Etech this year, I gave a talk entitled Ontology is Overrated. I want to put a transcript up online, and Mary Hodder, who recorded the talk, graciously agreed to give me a copy of the video.

When she came by NYC last week, she dropped off a DVD, which I then wanted to convert to AVI (the format used by my transcription service.) I installed ffmpeg and tried to convert the material, at which point I got an error message which read "To comply with copyright laws, DVD device input is not allowed." Except, of course, there are no copyright laws at issue here, since I'M THE COPYRIGHT HOLDER.

Got that? I am in possession of a video, of me, shot by a friend, copied to a piece of physical media given to me as a gift. In the video, I am speaking words written by me, and for which I am the clear holder of the copyright. I am working with said video on a machine I own. Every modern legal judgment concerning copyright, from the Berne Convention to the Betamax case, is on my side. AND I CAN'T MAKE A COPY DIRECTLY FROM THE DEVICE. This is because copyright laws do not exist to defend the moral rights of copyright holders -- they exist to help enforce artificial scarcity.

Copyright holders in my position, who want to use Creative Commons licensing to share material, are treated as pathological cases, because we're not behaving in the extortionate manner that current regulations are designed to protect.

I've gotten the copy another way, and the transcript will go up, but this is the state of the world, circa 2005: I can be prevented from copying my own words from my own devices, precisely because I want to share them freely, a use the law is perfectly prepared to regard as irrelevant.

Yes. Welcome to the copyfight. The scary thing is that more and more people are beginning to think it is NORMAL not to be able to do what Clay is upset about not being able to do.

Self-Publishing Looking Better

Self-Publishing Looking Better 04/27/2004 04:11 PM
Self-publishing of books has had a pretty bad reputation for a while. There were a few success stories, but not many. Now, however, technology is making it easier and much, much cheaper to self-publish, meaning that self-publishing is losing some of its negative connotation. It's certainly not going to wipe out professional publishers, who are there for a reason. However, it does open up more possibilities for people who want to publish books for very focused audiences, or those who see self-publishing as a kind of minor league "warmup" for publishing a book the traditional way. While some fear being inundated with dreadful books, that seems silly. If the books are bad, no one is going to buy them. Besides, there are already plenty of dreadful books out there that you never hear about. A successful book generally requires a marketing campaign that many individual authors are incapable of doing on their own - which is why big publishers are around. However, for some authors, doing their own publicity is a thrill, and gives them much more control over how their book is promoted.
