1990 is Calling. It Wants its Games Back

1990 is Calling. It Wants its Games Back 04/15/2005 04:43 AM
In a "haven't they got anything better to do" case, New York FBI agents have seized a haul of more than 60,000 pirated games... for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Yes, that's right, the console of choice - for some - 25 years ago. The AP story refers to pirated copies of consoles themselves, but reads like it means the games.

Four people were arrested in the crackdown, trying to sell games like Donkey Kong, Super Mario Brothers, Duck Hunt and Baseball. Ah, the classics. Prosecutors say the defendants agreed to sell the games to FBI agents who were willing to distribute the games in Manhattan and the Midwest.

It's claimed the group had imported as many as 280,000 pirate versions in four months last year. Nintendo told the FBI that individuals and companies copy the video games and sell the pirated versions throughout the world, costing the company millions of dollars in lost revenue annually - despite the fact they don't make the machines (or, most likely, actually sell the games) any more. Could it be to do with the fact that some of the "classic" titles are getting a rebirth on new handheld machines? Surely not.

Revenge of the S..t

Revenge of the S..t 06/06/2005 12:11 AM
Saw Star Wars III. I think that if you spliced episodes I, II and III together, you might get a pretty decent movie. Just take the last half an hour from this one - because no other bit in it deserves saving. The first third of the movie is mostly boring - I yawned at the attempts to create sense-of-wonder (you know guys, there's a thing called "too much").

The middle part of the movie I mostly giggled through, much to the annoyance of my fellow moviegoers, I'm sure.

The final third had a bit of the same feeling as the old saga, and I had nearly a tear in my eye at one point. But still.

Star Wars III is kinda like going to a bad hamburger place: It's crap food, and then you laugh at a poor waiter who drops a tray and makes a mess, but their ice cream leaves a decent aftertaste.

Next time, I'll just have the ice cream, thanks.

Neuroscience of revenge

Neuroscience of revenge 08/31/2004 01:55 PM
David Pescovitz: Researchers at the University of Zurich have shown that revenge is, well, sweet. Their experiment, described in Scientific American, was based on a game where one player was given the opportunity to punish another player for financially screwing him. PET scans revealed that when a player contemplated revenge, his striatum, a "reward center" in the brain, became energized.
This sort of causal relationship may explain why people are willing to discipline a stranger even when there is no immediate gain in it for them. "Emotions play a proactive as well as reactive role," remarks Brian Knutson of Stanford University who penned an accompanying commentary (to a paper about the study in the journal Science). He notes that "passionate" forces may need to be included in economic models because, as this research shows, “people show systematic deviations from rationality."

According to their website, the new version also includes a bigger dust bin that holds three times as much as the old Roomba. I've also heard that Roomba hackers may find some interesting new changes inside too. But can it still be used to deliver beer?

Before and Aftertaste of Revenge

Before and Aftertaste of Revenge 09/08/2004 07:44 PM

Scientific American reports that revenge is indeed sweet.  No surprise there.  I always thought that revenge is a powerful source of motivation and that inability to take revenge leads to severe stress.

The article should should have distinguish before and after 'taste' of revenge more clearly though.  I think the aftertaste is rather sour.
