More Writers Offering Books For Free
Online
04/29/2004 02:42 PMIt appears that it's not only musicians recognizing the power of free
publicity from putting their content for free online. While this
article ignores the success of more recent authors to release books
online (Cory Doctorow, Lawrence Lessig, etc...) in conjunction with
their hardcopy release (as well as a number of authors now
experimenting with releasing chapters of their books in progress), it
appears that a more mainstream novelist, Matthew Reilly, is now
releasing
his latest novel online for free. He's releasing it in sections,
rather than as a single download, but his theory is that it will help
get him a bigger audience from readers who previously didn't know
about him, or who were unlikely to find his books in bookstores. He
hopes that it will encourage people to go out and buy his other books
(this is his sixth book, and some of his earlier novels were
apparently "best sellers"). Also, his publishing company will publish
a hardcopy of this book later this year, after it's already completely
free online. Apparently, the idea was entirely his, but his
publishing company thinks it's a great idea - though, it may have
helped that Reilly sold them the publishing rights for a $1 to get rid
of the risk. It doesn't seem like my usual reading material, but if
you're interested in what he describes as a "Tom Clancy-Michael
Crichton" hybrid, you can download the first two sections of his book
at the
Hover Car
Racer website.

Microsoft offering free OS for 'cold'
servers
06/04/2004 10:38 AMIn what could be a sign of things to come, Microsoft Corp. is offering
a small sweetener to its Software Assurance licensing program. From
this week the company will allow servers used for disaster recovery to
carry copies of its Windows server software at no extra cost. A key
condition is that the server must be used only for disaster recovery.
Microsoft defines such servers as "cold servers", i.e. ones turned off
until a disaster arises. The "cold server" provision will be
applicable for the remaining term of any two- or three-year Software
Assurance contract and is not perpetual.

Nextel Moving Forward With Wireless
Broadband Offering
Nextel Moving Forward With Wireless
Broadband Offering
04/14/2004 01:05 PMBack in February, Nextel made quite a splash with their surprise
announcement that they were
offering
wireless broadband trials in North Carolina based on Flarion's
technology. While Nextel has apparently been looking at a variety of
wireless broadband technologies, it appears that they've been happy
with the North Carolina Flarion trials so far. They've expanded the
coverage area and are
now going to
accept paying customers to the service, which offers DSL-like
speeds. They say it will average 1.5 Mbps down stream and 375 kbps
upstream - with burst rates at double that. The cost of the plans
will vary between $35 and $75 depending on speeds and other features
(such as email accounts and storage). Clearly, this is something of a
vote for Flarion's technology, and it will be interesting to see if
Nextel continues to expand this offering (which sounds like it would
be quite competitive with Verizon Wireless's EV-DO offering) and
whether or not they publicly trial other technologies as well. Of
course, launching in one location and launching nationwide are two
very different beasts, but Nextel has shown that they've got quite a
lot of marketing muscle - and are especially good at segmenting and
targeting specific markets.

SaunaBlog. I like that name.
However, they seem to have lifted the entire description of what a blog is
directly from Wikipedia without
attribution, which, as far as I can tell, is a GNU FDL violation.
Wikipedia.fi has more.
Also, looking at a sample blog, it seems that they
are claiming copyright on anything that anyone writes on their own
blog, and apparently they're not making you even agree on a license
before you use the service. This is simply wrong - you simply cannot
assert copyright on something that you don't own. If you write a
blog, you own its content - regardless of who hosts it.
Saunalahti seems to be pretty lax about copyright issues. This
will bite them in the ankle, I'm sure.

RoamAD and Reach
fire up city wi-fi
15.04.2004 By PETER GRIFFIN
RoamAD has resurrected plans for a wireless internet network in
Auckland's inner city, but this time it will supply only the
technology, leaving the service to be run by growing "wi-fi" operator
Reach Wireless.
RoamAD has also received a US$100,000
($155,000) loan from Silicon Valley-based chip maker Intel, a small
amount given the multi-billion-dollar investment arsenal of Intel
Capital, but an endorsement of RoamAD's technology nevertheless.
Reach Wireless, which is backed by telecoms entrepreneur
Chris Jones, will offer wireless internet access in a 3km-square
section of the inner city spanning apartment buildings, cafes and
offices, using the network built by RoamAD.
Previously the
plan had been for RoamAD to run the network itself and seek a partner
in a large telco to market and service the network. But no deal
eventuated and RoamAD has spent the last year focusing on developing
its technology. "RoamAD is an equipment vendor and we need to sell
our technology to customers like Reach," said RoamAD chairman Martin
Levy.

RoamAD Partner Unwires Auckland
04/14/2004 03:46 PMRoamAD's so-far unique implementation of zone coverage with standard
Wi-Fi used by Reach Wireless to offer service in Auckland's central
business district: RoamAD uses 802.11b/g for their service and 802.11a
for backhaul between points. They blanket an area by using as many as
all of the legal, overlapping 802.11b/g channels with one card devoted
to each channel in a chassis. The VP of business development, Martin
Levy, told me at 802.11 Planet last year that for their goals, of
achieving a minimum of mid-300 Kbps throughout their zone, the
interference across overlapping channels was unimportant compared to
the additional, inexpensive coverage that their approach allowed. The
partner, Reach Wireless, will roll out RoamAD technology in all of the
major markets in New Zealand. RoamAD hopes to sell its technology to
cell carriers looking for major metropolitan coverage that can be
offered at higher speeds but a fractional cost (with no licensing
fees) as cellular broadband....
Wireless To Blanket All Of New York City
Wireless To Blanket All Of New York City
08/22/2004 01:12 PMNew York City is preparing to go fully wireless by January, 2005. The
deal is currently being finalized between New York City authorities
and six technology companies. To strengthen coverage and signal,
18,000 new lamp post-based antennas will be installed virtually
everywhere in the five burroughs that make up New York City.
The plan has already come under fire by local officials concerned what
the new antennas will do to people's health, now and in the long run.
Local activist John Campos of Queens, NY, says, "Within where I
live, over a mile radius, there are over 300 antennas already,"
said Mr Campos, pointing at a cluster of small masts on a rooftop
across the street. "What happens if in 20 years, there's even a
minor adverse reaction to human beings?"
Peter Vallone Jr is a Queens council member and chairman of the city's
safety committee who also shares Mr. Campos's concerns. "The city
was in the papers when I first came out against this, saying there's
less radiation than from a microwave (oven) from these antennas, and
that may be true," said councilman Vallone. "But nobody runs
a microwave 24 hours a day, seven days a week, outside their bedroom
door when they are sleeping. That's why it's important we study
this," he added.
Commissioner Menchini addresses these concerns by stating, "We've
had industry experts come in and advise us on this and everything I've
heard, from our health commissioner to the industry experts, says
there's no health risk associated with these antennas and these
devices."
