Is the Mambo project using stolen code? 09/17/2004 08:25 PM
Today a man named Brian Connolly posted an open letter to users of the Mambo content management system, threatening them with civil and criminal action if they continue to use Mambo. He claims that the Mambo project contains proprietary, copyrighted code that belongs to him and is currently in use in his customized Furthermore CMS. Is this the little brother of the SCO Group debacle, or a legitimate copyright infringement claim?

A new LinuxDevices.com article provides an overview of Daffyd Walter's open robot reference design project, better known as the Open Automaton Project. The article points out the differences between Walter's goal of an actual hardware implementation and the goals of other standards projects such as the RETF and OROCOS - whose goals are primarily concerned with APIs and software. There are also photos and a nice block diagram that gives an overview of the entire implementation.

Open Audiobooks Project 08/11/2004 11:15 PM

They're kicking off the project by recording Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. If you're a fan of the book, have a good voice, and want to contribute to the project, sign on their site.

Open Textbook Project
http://otp.inlimine.org/

The mission of the open textbook project is to develop openly copyrighted (copylefted) textbooks using the free software development model. The books, developed collaboratively, would be freely available to download, modify, print and distribute. Not only are textbooks unavailable to a great number of students in the US and abroad simply due to cost, few textbooks are universally suitable for courses in any given subject and many are simply sub-standard. The Open Textbook Project aims to address these issues by using a collaborative development model which has proven its effectiveness in the world of free software.

More on the Open WorldCat Project

More on the Open WorldCat Project 10/28/2003 11:08 PM

Kate points us to the Open WorldCat site for more information about the project (mentio ned here last week).

"The goal is to help libraries provide faster, more convenient service to current and potential users through familiar Web channels, and to point more people—even those who don't typically visit libraries—to library collections for the material they want. The pilot promotes the value and relevance of libraries on a scale far greater than any library or group could achieve alone....

OCLC will carefully evaluate feedback from pilot participants and focus groups as well as click-through statistics and other metrics to understand the pilot's strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, the results will be considered in the light of the question, 'Does this help libraries and their users?'...

The Open WorldCat pilot is available to libraries that have contributed cataloging records and/or ownership information to WorldCat."

Further reading includes buildin g on a success, how it works, frequently asked questions, and how to get involved. It looks like libra ries have to manually opt out of the service, but I would argue that libraries should wait and see how the project goes before pulling their plug.

Unfortunately, we found that a Google search for " "da vinci code" libraries" didn't produce any WorldCat records in the first four pages. I know that makes us bad librarians for not reading further, but we're simulating patron usage. ;-) We also tried to use the example OCLC shows in their explanation for how it works, and we didn't come up with anything there, either, and that's adding the word "libraries" to the search. I guess we'll have to keep testing this to see when and how the records do appear in searches. If you come across searches that produce WorldCat results in Google, please me know!
