Not only did today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive have to live without a name (or face for that matter) of his own, he had to haul butt in a fast moving ball with two huge targets mounted on its sides and try making it through a battle without the luxury of shields of any kind. On a plus note, he did get to blow up defending a giant space orb of evil that, by design, tends to be built specifically to be inevitably destroyed by upstart rebels...

Well, in the case of 8D8, there is the whole Star Wars character angle, plus like many kids, this guy liked taking out his aggressions on pool little Power Droids. So it would seem a no-brainer… Well, except that today's addition to the Vintage Photo Archive wasn’t really a popular action figure. Chances are, anyone with hours on their hands (like any toy collector doesn’t have too much of that) could probably still find a couple of these carded at their local mom and pop toy store. Hint: Look behind the Bionic Six action figures in the discount bin.

Even though they still call him Pruneface instead of “Orrimaarko.”, all have to agree that the EU did answer the age old question that overshadows all others in the vintage community: ...Who’s this guy???... With it’s rather ambiguous card back photo, most collectors thought today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive was based on one of the myriad characters from Jabba’s Palace who got a millisecond of screen time in Return Of The Jedi. As it turns out, he ended up being a rebel dude from the second act... who only got a millisecond of screen time in Return Of The Jedi.

Despite how simplistic the vintage Nikto figure appears to be, it is one of the most faithful sculpts to be found in the Kenner line. As a matter of fact, save the yellow lines that were on the character’s pants, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive proves that the people at Kenner were not only very concerned with making top quality toys that best represented the film, they wanted to make toys worthy of the children that they made the toys for. There is little doubt that Kenner ‘really did care’ about more than the bottom line and it showed.

Mind you, one has to wonder what the point of adding Warok to the collection. For the most part, he is nothing more than a better made version of a figure that came out a few month’s earlier (Lumat). LEGO image leaks are about as common as ticks on a dogfish, yet this Eurobricks forum post features what appears to be the first 'official' images of the LEGO mystery set 10131. So far LEGO has remained very hush hush about the contents of this set, but according to the latest images it appears it will include Darth Vader's TIE, possibly two standard TIE Fighters, and TIE Fighter (Drone?) from the Rogue Squadron video game. While we look forward to official confirmation from LEGO, it seems we can at least pencil this in as mystery solved.

As we talked about this weekend, Rio has announced at least one new player, an update to the Rio Nitrus called the 'Rio Carbon,' a 5GB hard disk-based MP3 player with a killer 20-hour battery life (if that's the sort of thing that slays you; the iPod mini does about 8 to 10 hours, for comparison). Interestingly, the Carbon also has support for Microsoft's new DRM platform, Janus; to my knowledge it's the first player that has.

The Rio Carbon should be available late August and will retail for $250. Now where's the Rio Chroma announcement?

Reuters - The Pentagon may have to scrap its premier fighter jet program to help pay for the war in Iraq, Sen. John McCain, an influential member of the Armed Services Committee, said on Sunday.

Rebelscum reader Jon reports an interesting find on eBay.com today. Apparently there is a X-Wing and TIE Fighter two pack coming our way! The ships are packaged with an window box front displaying both ships in a dogfight of sorts. The set also includes two action figures, Luke Skywalker ( X-Wing Pilot ) and a TIE Fighter pilot.
