Samsung A700 Won't Support Videophone

Samsung A700 Won't Support Videophone 06/02/2004 08:56 AM

a700_2.jpg imageSprintPCSInfo is reporting that the upcoming Samsung A700 will not be able to support two-way live video streaming as has been rumored, allowing only video clips to be sent from phone to phone in much the same manner as almost every newish phone on the market. The Qualcomm encoding/decoding platform does look fairly robust, though, with the ability to stream television near 30 frames per second and play back MPEG-4 Level 2 video clips (DivX/XviD, for instance) as well as 3GPP, H.263, RealVideo, and MotionJPEG. Basically, you'll be able to watch pretty much any video you want on this phone, if that's your thing.

sprint_sph-a700.jpg imageSprint has finally gotten the Samsung SPH-A700 up for sale - 400 bucks free and clear, or $250 with a two-year indenture. The SPH-A700 is a nice enough clamshell, if a little too round and oddly-colored for my taste, but its main claim to fame is its ability to work with Sprint's MobiTV offering, the streaming video service that works over Sprint's existing Vision platform. What I've seen of MobiTV hasn't really impressed me, but as a service that's available everywhere, it's pretty much the only game in town right now (AT&T Wireless's EDGE-based offerings is likely-superior (I haven't seen it), but it's only available in two markets at the moment).

Samsung Adds DivX Support via Firmware
Update
07/28/2004 01:20 PM

img_DivX01.jpg imageNow I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but do any of the current movie download services offer their wares in DivX format? Because if not, where exactly does Samsung, when detailing its plans to upgrade some of its DVD player firmware to support DivX, intend its customers to get the files that "can be downloaded over high-speed lines in a relatively short time?" Surely not the internet. That would be tantamount to murdering film carpenters' entire families.

That aside, DivX firmware updates for Samsung players from the company itself is plus plus. Now if they'd throw in a little XviD flavor we could stream the movies we've already (legally, for honest) ripped. Update: Oh, hey, look at the image that I put up myself. I'm mostly functional! (Thanks, Antii!)

Also, Happy Birthday, Modbuster!

dlink_dvc_2000.jpg imageI will mention the new D-Link i2eye DVC-2000 Broadband VideoPhone because it is my job to mention new products. "Hello reader," I often say, "may I interest you in a new product?" This works well when the product is piping hot and fresh. Your glands start churning or whatever it is that glands do, and you look at the product with a little misting in your eyes, looking back to me, and you have no words to say, but we share a little moment, and I nod because -- and now I am misting a little, too -- I know exactly how you feel, because I feel it, too. So this is my job, yes, but also my calling.

However, the new DVC-2000 requires another DVC-2000 to be on the other end to operate instead of working on some sort of open standard, or with software on a PC. What that means is this time, you looked at the product I unveiled with a flourish, and instead of something hot and mouth-watering the steam instead rises from a turd. A dark, brown, proprietary turd. And when you look back at me, I can see your lip is quivering.

Along with more pictures of the attractive Mac-like LLUON All In One PC we talked about a couple of days ago, SorobanGeeks has pictures of Samsung's new Powerbook-looking M40, a Pentium M-based machine with a 17-inch widescreen (and what looks to be an aluminum case). I guess at least a couple of Korean companies think Apple is a good place to cop designs. Seeing their results, I can't say I disagree.

sgh-d600-3.jpgSamsung seemingly manages to release a new phone every three days. The SGH-D600 is the newest gem. At first look, the two megapixel camera with expandable memory definitely looks nice, but the expandable memory is in the unusual Transflash format. This phone does have a large 320x240 LCD display and most of the standard dosh that comes along with with a nice cellie including flash, Bluetooth, not to mention a flip out keypad.

samsung_oled.jpg imageSamsung, who is showing off this new "world's largest" 21-inch OLED display, has also announced their products that are to be shown at this year's CES. While we'll definitely dig in with some more details throughout the week, there's some appetizing bits in there already—I'd be happy to include a 57-inch LCD or a 67-inch 1080p DLP HD televisions in my "things to steal from CES" list.

Check it out after the jump.
