Pentax to Drop Film Cameras?

Pentax to Drop Film Cameras?

Pentax to Drop Film Cameras? 06/02/2004 08:56 AM

pentax
logo imageAlthough there's official word from Pentax, information intended for Russian distributors is implying that Pentax will be leaving the film-camera business behind to instead focus almost solely on digital imaging, making it the first of the "Big Five" camera companies to make the transition. Compact and single-lens reflex film cameras will be phased out over the next six months, leaving medium-format units as the only remaining film cameras in their line-up. While it's possible this is only applicable to the Russian market, I expect we'll hear clarification from Pentax soon.

In addition, Pentax has a new DSLR (called the "*ist" - what is it with camera companies and unpronounceable names? Asteriskist? Wildcardist? Starist? Multiplyist? Fireballist?) and a pistol-grip hybrid camera/camcorder coming out, as well.

Pentax Optio S4 Reviewed 07/30/2004 08:55 AM

optios_40_front_screen.jpg imagePocket-Lint has a short take on the Pentax Optio S40, a pared-down (feature-wise) but swollen (size-wise) version of the Pentax S4 that forgoes a rechargeable battery for two AAs but kept the 4-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, and aluminum casing. All in all, Stu seems fairly happy with the product, despite some image noise problems most low-end digitals seem to suffer from and a lack of bundled SD card (the S40 does have internal memory of its own, but it's a meager 11 meg -- enough for seven photos).

Thing is, though, for a camera that's been out of a few months and is slightly larger than its cousin, you'd think it would be a lot cheaper, but a cursory look at Froogle shows the S40 and the smaller S4 selling for about the same price. My money is usually on the small guy.

Cameras, Privacy And The Law

Cameras, Privacy And The Law 02/17/2004 06:31 PM
Found over at Alan Reiter's Camera Phone Report is this story written by a Kansas City Star columnist talking about how everyone's overreacting to the "dangers" of camera phones by worrying about a specific technology, rather than the misuse of that technology. The writer lists a bunch of other devices (including watches and MP3 players) that include cameras, but which no one is calling to ban. However, his overall point is that technology trumps privacy - and on top of that, technology trumps the law. The issue we should be focusing on, according to the article, is making laws that protect privacy, not ones that outlaw technology. Then, if someone is using the technology to violate someone's privacy, you go after them for breaking the privacy law - not the law banning the, otherwise useful, technology. Makes sense. Of course, if you then combine it with another article (found at Smart Mobs), it raises other questions. This is a case where a man with a wireless security camera system realized that he was getting video from a neighbor's security camera instead of his own - and witnessed the neighbor abusing her foster children. He called the police and the woman was quickly arrested, which is clearly a good thing. However, where does the law stand on video like that, which is accidentally intercepted? Is it only a privacy violation if the voyeurism is intentional? Clearly, there are a lot of new legal and privacy issues raised by new technologies - and trying to simply outlaw technology or cram new technologies into old laws isn't going to cut it.

Do Red Light Cameras Help?

Do Red Light Cameras Help? 01/05/2005 10:30 PM
We've had a number of stories about problems with speed cameras, but similar problems apply to red light cameras as well. Of course, the biggest question is whether or not these cameras help make the roads safer. The problem is that the incentive of those installing the cameras is often to maximize revenue. Thus, they choose locations that are high traffic -- but not necessarily dangerous. In some cases, such as in San Diego, it turned out that officials reduced the length of the yellow light on traffic lights where speed cameras were positioned, in order to create more violations. While studies have shown that locations that have red light cameras do reduce side impact accidents, they increase rear impact accidents, because people slam on the brakes to avoid getting caught by the camera. The net effect, however, is in dispute. Some say that the reduction in side impact crashes outweighs slower rear impact crashes -- which may be true. Of course, if officials really want to stop side impact crashes from people running red lights, it seems there's a much simpler and more effective solution. Some locations do this, but I've never understood why it's not more popular: have a period of time when lights in both directions are red. That is, when the lights for one roadway turns red, don't immediately turn the cross traffic lights green. Give it a second, allowing the stragglers to get through, and then let the other traffic go. Of course, if this were all about safety that's what would happen -- and it's pretty clear that safety is coming second to revenue in many of these cases.

Fortunately for me, Panasonic and Sony have provided some low-hanging fruit this morning with the launch of several new digital cameras, including a really nice looking CyberShot [pictured] with a 7-megapixel sensor. And by "nice looking" I mean "pretty cheap," as Sony plans to launch the DSC-P150 for less than $500. I was almost going to buy a camera today, but now I may end up waiting a bit.

Panasonic's 5 new Lumix models look decent, too, with 3.4- to 5-megapixel options and 12x optical zoom on the FZ model line. LivingRoom has a round up page with most of the details, as does Photography Blog.
