My
March
21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition
because, on the same day, a new events database called
EVDB was announced and shown at PC
Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so
for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among
others:
Dan
Farber,
Ross
Mayfield,
Om Malik,
David
Weinberger, and
Paul
Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes).
The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style,
Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds
promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public.

06/11/2004 03:45 AMFor the developer - whether an in-house member of staff, a part-time
coder, an independent one-man shop, or someone involved with writing
applications and services for major vendors - the problem of finding a
directory to hold identity information isn't difficult. In fact, it
isn't a problem. All the major directory vendors have programs to
supply free copies of their directories to developers. But even if you
don't qualify for one of those programs you can still download, for
free, the OpenLDAP directory. However there is a problem with some of
these programs and services: How do you administer the directory
outside of your own application?

05/13/2004 05:19 AMThe Economics of Open Source Hijacking and Declining Quality
of Digital Information Resources: A Case for Copyleft by Andrea
Ciffolillihttp://opensourc
e.mit.edu/papers/ciffolili.pdfAbstract:The economics of information goods
suggest the need of institutional intervention to address the problem
of revenue extraction from investments in resources characterized by
high fixed costs of production and low marginal costs of reproduction
and distribution. Solutions to the appropriation issue, such as
copyright, are supposed to guarantee an incentive for innovative
activities at the price of few vices marring their rationale. In the
case of digital information resources, apart from conventional
inefficiencies, copyright shows an extra vice since it might be used
perversely as a tool to hijack and privatise collectively provided
open source and open content knowledge assemblages. Whilst the impact
of hijacking on open source software development may be uncertain or
uneven, some risks are clear in the case of open content works. The
paper presents some evidence of malicious effects of hijacking in the
Internet search market by discussing the case of The Open Directory
Project. Furthermore, it calls for a wider use of novel institutional
remedies such as copyleft and Creative Commons licensing, built upon
the paradigm of copyright customisation.

Microsoft Product Support Services.
Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs
Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the
network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden
folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this
local installation source to install Office, and the local source
remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later
on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance
mode to add new features without their original media.

Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its
Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a
form of open-source development internally to create technology the
company will sell commercially.
IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a
collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing
and testing new technology.
Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM
Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community
Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company.
These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research
and Global Services, he said."
Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the
so called open source development process have they built into the
Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different
definitions of the open source development process (via
Ross
Gardler).
