I got a Mac and it sucks

I got a Mac and it sucks 03/08/2004 11:11 PM
I just spent an hour on the phone with my father-in-law failing to help him find his email client. It used to be there, but it vanished from the tool bar at the bottom. Now we can't get it back. None of the Finder options seem to actually help us find anything. I know it's there. I know it's "easy." But it sure ain't intuitive. Anyone want to give me the most basic instruction about how to find things on the !@#$% Mac, OS X? As Dr. Dean would say, "Aaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhh!" [Ten minutes later] I can't even walk my father-in-law...

Buy.com still sucks 02/12/2004 12:40 PM
More than four years ago, I ordered a CD from buy.com. The album was a new release and widely available everywhere, but it took them two months to process and ship the order...and then it never actually showed up. I haven't shopped there since. This morning I got an email from buy.com announcing their "NEW Cellular Store", one of many I've gotten from them since that initial shopping experience despite...

Passym sucks

Passym sucks 01/22/2004 03:17 AM

Tonight is my second night in an Embassy Suites with Passym Wireless internet access, and I have to say that Passym really sucks.

Connectivity is just horrible. I don't know why the service sucks so badly... it might be because I'm in a corner room (they're larger at the Embassy Suites) or it might be because I'm using a Macintosh, but neither of those two things should be reasons that the connectivity sucks so badly...

Maybe there are too many people using the service to keep up with what I want to do, but that shouldn't be a problem. I've normally stayed in Wyndham and Marriot hotels with Wayport access, and even though most of the time those hotels only provide wired access, they always worked just fine. I could connect to my office's VPN at the most complicated end of connectivity issues, and I could definitely send email through my own servers, but with this silly Passym service, I can't connect to the VPN and I can't even send email through my own service... and the speeds are terribly slow compared to what I expect them to be... especially at $10/day.

The worst part is that to get technical support, I'm supposed to email their support@ email address... no one here at the hotel knows anything about the service from a technical/troubleshooting stand-point, and I can't get email out through my email client. Good thing I have a webmail client set up on my server...

So, next time I stay in a hotel, I'll ask them if they have internet access, and I'll ask who the provider is. If it's Passym, I'll choose a different hotel if internet connectivity will be a need.

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek

Sometimes it sucks to be a Geek 09/20/2004 02:53 AM

My wife and I went to a work related party last night which turned out to be pretty boring. So much for the $70.00 spent on tickets. We left early and knew that the sitter was good to go decided to drop in on a friend of hers.

We get to her house and I am admiring her house and see a big Master Degree in Education hanging over her computer. I was surprised to see it actually as we have known her for a while and she had never mentioned it. Anyway to make a long story short she says hey my PC is having problems can you look at it.

You guessed it 2 hours later and much under breath cursing I give up and tell her I need to take it home or we can just pull the restore disk out and start from scratch. I get this deer in the headlights look when I explain that her computer has been hijacked and is infected with nearly every piece of spyware known to man.

1. Virus Definitions 2 years old
2. She had never run Windows Update.
3. Systems is plugged directly into cable modem
4. No Spyware detection software
5. No Firewall

Remember now she has a Masters Degree in Education. She commented I should open a business and fix peoples computers like hers. I guess my 21+ years working with advanced electronics now makes me qualified to fix computers. I suppose I could charge her $750.00 for a days worth of work. All I could do was smile and say drop it by the house and I will get it fixed for you...

All my wife could say when we left was sorry. I hate stupid educated people. Sometimes being a geek sucks.

I did a stupid thing earlier this week I purchased a spell checker to use for online spell checking being I could not get Firefox's spell checker to work. I went googling and thought I found a good program I should have run it a couple of days. What a piece of crap. When it is running it seems to want to own the clipboard and not give it back. It doesn't recognize when I have put the cursor in a different window. The list goes on. I will be invoking their 30 day satisfaction guaranteed clause. Anyone have a good suggestion for a spell checker to use with Firefox

Why JSP Sucks So Hard

Why JSP Sucks So Hard 12/19/2002 11:43 PM
once again my UI engineers will be taking perfectly good HTML written in Dreamweaver and tearing it apart, throwing out some of it and rewriting other parts of it, just to make it work with the JSP they're writing. Once they're done, the HTML author will have absolutely no clue what the page does any more, and will have no desire or ability to edit it. When we insist that no really we need this redesigned, we'll spend twice as long doing it (doubling our costs, negative ROI, bad technology choice, yadda yadda yadda) since the HTML author will need that long to write in sample data and then have the JSP author tear it out again. -- Marc Hedlund

Is Adam Bosworth saying the same thing?

ARGH, MY MAC SUCKS!

ARGH, MY MAC SUCKS! 05/12/2004 08:23 AM
How do I turn on the screensaver with a key combination!?! I don't want to use the hot corners (I already have them overloaded with Exposé and I want to have the top left corner free so I don't have to worry about counting pixels when I try and access the Apple menu), but so far the best way to lock the Powerbook is to go and turn the lid down and then back up again. which turns on the screen saver (and stops iTunes, BTW, since the computer goes to sleep for a second).

I know there are Mac people reading me, so please: tell me which key combination I have to use, or which freeware application I have to install to just be able to press Apple-F12 to lock the computer! I've been trying to find the info from Google, but apparently I haven't been able to figure out the right keywords.

Frustrated now!

(Sorry for the headline, just wanted to grab your attention there. My Mac Powerbook does NOT suck, it is a wonderful little machine and I grow more attached to it every day. It is by far the best computer I've ever owned. I just need this one thing to make it perfect. Please?)

Monroe County Family Court Judge Marilyn O'Connor ruled March 31 that two parents "should not have yet another child which must be cared for at public expense."
Unconstitutional? Maybe. But not sufficiently so for the NY ACLU to say much anything about it. Maybe the Judge could have recommended the same sex-ed scheme that shows, in parts of England and Wales where it [called A Pause] was trialled in 104 schools, sexual intercourse among 16-year-olds fell by up to 20 per cent. Now that may mean we have to have more discussion of oral and manual, with less genital-genital emphasis. Anything that promotes the right to say 'no' amongst vulnerable young folks is alright by me.

Sucks Sites Get Some More Support

Sucks Sites Get Some More Support 04/05/2005 04:42 AM
The issue of so-called "suck s sites" has come up plenty of times before. Someone upset by something a company did puts up a website all about how that company "sucks" and (almost invariably) the company proceeds to sue the person for trademark infringement, thereby guaranteeing that their heavy handed tactics get more attention. A smarter move might be to actually address the issues on the site or simply leave it alone, but somehow many corporate lawyers just can't resist. While some of these sites have been awarded to the companies, it looks like the courts are increasingly realizing that people have the right to criticize companies online. The latest such decision, about someone angry with a hair-replacement service, has some great quotes from the court explaining why this isn't trademark infringement (though, the court also chose to go the pun route with phrases like "bald-faced" and "splitting hairs"). "The Supreme Court has made it clear that trademark infringement law prevents only unauthorized uses of a trademark in connection with a commercial transaction in which the trademark is being used to confuse potential consumers. Kremer's use of the Bosley Medical mark simply cannot mislead consumers into buying a competing product -- no customer will mistakenly purchase a hair replacement service from Kremer under the belief that the service is being offered by Bosley." Once again, the courts have been called in to explain that a trademark doesn't mean you control every instance of the trademark -- but just those where someone is trying to mislead and confuse potential customers. You would think that lawyers (you know, experts in the law) would understand this concept by now. Update: Apparently, confusion over this matter is fairly common. Even the AP's "legal affairs writer" seems to think copyright and trademarks are interchangeable terms.

The orange XML icon sucks

The orange XML icon sucks 06/16/2004 01:03 PM

I'm not a fan of the orange XML icon, even though I use it on my categories page. I love the concept of a universally recognised icon for RSS feeds, but XML is simply the wrong acronym to put on it. Don't think it's liable to cause confusion? Check out this excerpt from Journalism.co.uk (emphasis mine):

The Guardian is planning to launch more XML-based services in the next few months, adding to the news feed services the site already provides to both commercial clients and individual readers.

XML, also known as RSS, is a method of streaming information from a website. Many sites now offer a free XML feed enabling readers to receive headlines from news sites via a desktop software program. XML also avoids problems involved with sending email newsletters, such as junk mail and out-of-date addresses.

Though the unit brings back a flash media expansion slot, they say the size of the unit itself and retroness of its internal menus strike a fatal blow. XHTML For Syndication Sucks

XHTML For Syndication Sucks 12/03/2002 11:46 AM

I've been reading a lot lately about using XHTML instead of RSS for syndication of a web site in a news aggregator. The statement is this:

All that would be needed is standardization of names and classes for page elements like DIVs and headers. A post/entry title would always be an H3, with a class set to "title", for example. Permanent links would always be P tags with their classes set to "permalink". Simple.

To me, this is not only a terrible idea, but a lazy idea. (But, then again, I could be speaking hastily.) How hard is it to create an RSS file? How hard is it to setup MT? Why would I want to give up the right to name my .title class .blogtitle or .articletitle? I like RSS, it works well, and is automatically generated for me, as well as for everybody who has a use for it.

So I guess the whole point of using XHTML for syndication is to get away from having to type in http://noeljackson.com/index.xml instead of just pointing your aggregator to the base URL (http://noeljackson.com). But wait a sec isn't that what the <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="http://www.noeljackson.com/index.xml" /> tag is for?

The only plus is not having to maintain multiple files. But the same problem occurs, you have to mark-up your XHTML according to someone elses specs, just like with RSS. Except with RSS you can separate your content from your design, which makes RSS syndication faster than XHTML and to me it seems like a "cleaner" idea. I don't know about you, but I definitely don't want to see XHTML become the next syndication form. Don't hate me for saying that, but I just think there are better ways to do it. Having pure XML and an XSLT stylsheet for XHTML and RSS seems like the best way to do it to me. I just wish XSLT stylesheets could be easier to implement on the client side. Oh bother, I sure hope RSS sticks around.

EFF's new hires

EFF's new hires 05/06/2004 03:07 AM
EFF's staff grew by two today: my newest cow-orkers are Annalee "Techspolitation" Newitz (media baron) and Tim "BAWRN" Pozar (bull-goose geek).
Newitz was formerly Culture Editor at the San Francisco Bay Guardian. She has discussed the social impact of technology in Wired and Salon magazines, on CNN and NPR, as well as in her syndicated weekly column Techsploitation. As EFF's Media Coordinator/Policy Analyst, she will be handling media relations, as well as writing white papers, policy recommendations, and doing research. "I've always considered my writing to be a form of activism," she says, "so I'm pleased to join forces with an organization whose principles and dedication I've admired for many years."

Pozar is a longtime activist in the high tech community and has spent the past several years consulting as a network architect. One of the founders of Brightmail, an antispam company, he is also founder of Bay Area Research Wireless Network (BARWN) and co-founder of the Bay Area Wireless User Group (BAWUG). As Technical Director, he will manage new technical projects for EFF, as well as a team of analysts. "My goal in life is to foster the democratization of communication," he says, "and my work at EFF will help me continue the pursuit of that goal."

I once sat in on a wild conversation between Tim Pozar, John Gilmore and Tom Jennings (the inventor of FIDONet), about the day that Tim wrote some code for John's ISP, the Little Garden, that bridged FIDONet into Usenet, joining the two largest conversational networks in the world with a little software. I'm looking forward to more mind-blowing reminisces from Pozar, now that he's in-house and at large. Link
