Thanks Taipei

Thanks Taipei 03/30/2005 04:24 AM

I was in Taiwan for one day and am at the airport on my way back to Tokyo now. Even though the bloggers at the bloggers meeting probably came mostly for the iPod Shuffle give-away, it was a great turnout and it was a treat to meet the vibrant Taiwan bloggers community. The talk the next day to the somewhat more sober, but venerable TWNIC audience was also interesting. It was great to meet Paul Wilson from APNIC and listen to John Klensin who was almost as convincing on video as he is in real life.

Special thanks to Ching Chiao for organizing a wonderful trip and the excellent meals. Taiwan is right up there with Italy now in my "best food overall" category.

Taipei 101 Elevators

Taipei 101 Elevators 09/07/2004 11:52 PM

Extreme Machines: World's Fastest Elevator: I was watching a great History Channel series on skyscrapers which included a sidebar on the elevators at Taipei 101.

The 1667-ft., 101-story building has 67 elevator units, including two that service the 89th-floor observation deck and qualify as the world's fastest. These rocket skyward at a peak speed of 3314 ft. per minute (fpm) [...]

I'll save you the math — that's 37 m.p.h (59 k.p.h). Vertically. You had to see a video of these things — they flew up and down the shaft.

The real challenge was the human factor. To hold down noise — for those in the building, as well as in the elevators — the observation-deck shuttles are shaped like twin-nosed bullets, reducing aerodynamic drag, what is known in the trade as windage. They're equipped with sound-isolation shrouds, acoustic tiles and isolated floor platforms. Even the counterweights are aerodynamic.

The one really cool thing they don't mention is that several of the elevators (not the high-speed ones that service the observation desk) are two stories high. I couldn't quite figure it out from the show, but it appears that when one of the floors of the elevator stopped on one of the building floors, the other floor of the elevator opened on the building floor above or below it...maybe. I'm not sure.

(I'm betting that there's a Gadgetopia reader out there that knows someone who knows someone else, etc. that may work in this building. Or has visited it. I bet there's someone out there that knows how this works. I want to know — tell a friend.)

Some more great information about the monster that is Taipei 101 here, here, and here.

TAIPEI -- If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then Apple Computer executives walking around the Computex show in Taipei this week should be feeling pretty good. Several products were on display from local Taiwanese vendors that, while perhaps not exact copies of Apple products, were surely inspired by them.

mobinot2.jpg imageThe Register's Tony Smith has even more about all the personal video players that are popping up at Computex, including this very iPodesque X-Fram II from TwinMOS (also sold as the Mobinote 7010) with a 7-inch, 754 x 480 LCD and a 20GB 1.8-inch hard drive. They are even calling its bundled app 'DVX-POD,' just so you don't mistake their intentions. It's got an AV port for on-the-fly MPEG4 encoding (although only at 352 x 288) and can play back a wealth of formats, including Divx 3/4/5 (although no word for XviD), WMV, and Quicktime 6, which is a rarity.
