Motorola Demos Working UWB

Motorola Demos Working UWB 05/21/2004 12:42 PM
Motorola's Freescale division ups the ante on ultrawideband (UWB) by showing working demo of what's to come this Christmas: The head of UWB innovator XtremeSpectrum, acquired by Motorola last year, is now director of Motorola subsidiary Freescale's UWB division. Martin Rofheart showed a camcorder sending data over UWB to a plasma television, according to this second-hand report at Wi-Fi Planet. Motorola's version of UWB is still winding its way through the IEEE process, but literally every other company in the industry (most members of the Multi-Band OFDM Alliance) withdrew from 802.15.3a to develop standards through trade organizations. By showing working products and promising Christmas 2004 products, Motorola has raised the bar. Some industry experts are convinced that Motorola hasn't a chance at dominating the market, no matter how early they get in, because Intel, Texas Instruments, and many, many other firms will have competing products that all interoperate. Motorola's consumer partners' equipment will only work with other Motorola-based equipment....

Rumor: Nextel Working With Motorola on
"Service Master" Bluetooth Phone

Rumor: Nextel Working With Motorola on
"Service Master" Bluetooth Phone
08/20/2004 06:20 AM

One of our more reliable tipsters had this little nugget to drop. Take it for what it's worth:

I was talking to guy in a waiting room while we were both getting our cars serviced. Turns out he is some sort of higher up corporate level Nextel employee and he's impressed that my dad's business is on Nextel.

So I said to the guy, "When are you gonna finally get on the Bluetooth bandwagon?"

He told me they have a Bluetooth phone in the pipeline they are calling the "Service Master" that they developed with Motorola (surprise). Basically he said the only reason they are coming out with it is that Stanley Steamer, ChemLawn, and a few other companies comprising some 30,000 accounts demanded the bluetooth technology from Nextel and that's a big chunk of their business so they decided to keep them happy.

He didn't give a time frame for the release of the phone but indicated that the named businesses would be the first to get them.

Free open WiFi on Tacoma-Washington
train, courtesy WiFi hacker
03/24/2005 08:15 PM
Cory Doctorow: A Seattle wireless hacker rides a commuter train from Tacoma every day with a battery-powered WiFi hotspot in his backpack that's linked up to the Internet with a 14.4 144k wireless modem. Catch his train and get free WiFi on your commute.
The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID "FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy 07/16/2004 04:50 PM
A few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's WiFi Seeker, a convenient keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced WiFi Spy is a rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform identically.

To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

Working Hard, Hardly Working

Working Hard, Hardly Working 06/15/2004 10:07 AM
Three years ago, I was working at a small company as the unofficial IT director / all-purpose computer bitch. I was laid off in early 2003, but to this day, the job presents me with difficulties; namely, that of telling prospective employers what I did, and for that matter, what the company itself did. I have virtually no idea what this company's function was, despite working there for over a year and a half, although I did learn how to spew an amazing amount of marketing jargon without thinking. As for my role there, it was essentially vast tracts of doing absolutely nothing, punctuated erratically by moments of panicking and crisis-defusion, usually involving something truly earth-shattering like the CEO not being able to print her email. When asked by interviewers "What did your company do?" I am forced to mumble vaguaries about consulting and hope they leave the issue alone.
