Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), currently a Release Candidate in Beta testing, includes significant enhancements to the Windows Firewall component, previously known as the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF). Windows Firewall is a stateful host-based firewall that discards unsolicited incoming traffic, providing a level of protection for computers against malicious users or programs. To provide better protection for computers connected to any kind of network (such as the Internet, a home network, or an organization network), Windows XP SP2 enables Windows Firewall on all network connections by default. This new behavior can impair some types of communications. This article describes how to deploy the appropriate configuration settings for Windows Firewall on an organization network so that it is enabled and providing protection, and so that communications are not impaired.

Security Pipeline obtained access to the first widespread beta of Microsoft's forthcoming Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) during the holidays. Microsoft has said that this beta represents a subset of what will be released when this software is finalized sometime during the first half of 2004. We tested the new software on a couple of test machines, and found it to be very reliable during a couple of days use. It's not recommended that you install this beta in a production environment, however.

Microsoft needs to distribute its new Win XP Service Pack 2 to 260 million Windows users at 75MB each. Moving a wodge that big to that many machines is too much even for the biggest software company on the planet. So the folks at Downhill Battle have seized upon this as an opportunity to prove the substantial noninfringing uses of P2P by releasing a .torrent of SP@ (complete with checksum info so that you can verify that this isn't some malware-riddled trojan, except to the extent that it is a typical piece of the Windows XP OS). • PC Magazine: Windows XP SP2 Has a Dangerous Hole. Windows XP Service Pack 2 promises to raise the security bar for the sometimes beleaguered operating system. Unfortunately, one of the new features could be spoofed so that it reports misleading information about system security, or worse, lets a malicious program watch for an opportunity to do damage without being detected.
  • Robert Scoble gave me a hard time when I advised people to wait a little while to install SP2. I'm still waiting a little longer. (Of course, I have a serious firewall already installed, and take other security measures, and one of the reasons to use SP2 is its enhanced security features, which are clearly better than what Microsoft was selling in XP and XP SP1.)

As we reported yesterday, Service Pack 2 for Windows XP has finally been released and is now available for people to download and install on their systems. The file, at just over 250 Megs, is a hefty download yet is packed with new updates well worth getting (Microsoft will allow people to order a CD with it on in due course).

The install took about 5-10 minutes, yet clearly this figure will vary from system to system. After installing and rebooting XP asked me to turn on automatic updates (even before reaching windows). An excellent move on Microsoft's behalf, and one that serves to highlights a growing commitment to security and user safety. On the first run, Microsoft also loads up the new Security Center. The Security Center monitors your Antivirus, Firewall, and Auto Update situation. If it detects anything that is potentially damaging or hazardous, it will prompt you with a warning and give you advice on how to resolve the issue. Microsoft has saved a lot of hassle for users in that if you have Zone Alarm installed, they leave the Windows Firewall off to prevent conflicts.

Less importantly for a Firefox user like me, Internet Explorer has been updated and the new features seem helpful. It seems somewhat nippier that before, and with additions like pop-up blocking make it a slightly more attractive prospect than before; however, it still lacks features like tabbed browsing and standards compliancy that still make some of the new features mute points. To really start winning back people, Microsoft need to get IE 7 out the door with these features (Before longhorn though?).

Asides from these major additions, there are many more subtle changes that XP SP2 has brought in (NX code, improved security and stability). As a user, my computer does seem to be doing tasks a bit faster. The only minor problem; XP re-installed MS Messenger (to be expected), yet continued to load it up even though MSN Messenger is running! Silently wasting 5 megs of Ram, it's annoying, but thankfully removable. I haven't had any of the problems that a few people have mentioned, and would thus recommend SP2 to all.

New Windows Service Pack 2 Info 09/08/2004 01:29 AM
Based on customer feedback, Microsoft has changed the date on which Automatic Updates (AU) and Windows Update (WU) will deliver Windows XP SP2 regardless of the presence of the blocking mechanism. This change will provide customers a greater window of time to enable them to plan and deploy Windows XP SP2. AU and WU will now continue to honor the blocking mechanism that prevents the offering of Windows XP SP2 until Tuesday 12 April 2005. Beginning on Tuesday 12 April 2005 AU and WU will deliver SP2 regardless of the presence of the blocking mechanism. Note that this is also the scheduled day for a monthly cumulative security update.
