Stealth Overclocking
Stealth Overclocking
04/12/2005 01:05 PMThere's an awful lot of overclocking out there: The Windows team
at Microsoft was getting some bizarre crash reports. They followed up
on 10 of them, and found that five people had intentionally
overclocked their system. As for the rest:
The other half said, "What's overclocking?" He called them and
walked them through some configuration information and was able to
conclude that they were indeed all overclocked. But these people were
not overclocking on purpose. The computer was already overclocked
when they bought it. These "stealth overclocked" computers came
from small, independent "Bob's Computer Store"-type shops, not from
one of the major computer manufacturers or retailers.
So are these shops buying slower processings, then overclocking
them and selling them as CPUs of the actual speed they've been
overclocked to? Sneaky. Sleazy.

outraged people. But more importantly, it has captured the imagination
of young men and women up and down the country who don't give much of
a shit about anything."
I'm not sure what's more disturbing about this online photo gallery --
(a) the fact that people are sick enough do this, photograph this,
publish it on the web, and think it's funny; (b) the fact that I'm
blogging about it, or (c) the fact that Lynndie England bears a
striking resemblance to the fellow in the photo at left. Photo gallery

Celebrating Radar
Celebrating Radar
06/03/2004 10:47 AMRadar technology certainly isn't new, but that doesn't mean there
aren't improvements. CSMonitor has a brief overview of
some new
developments in radar technology, and how they'll be used in both
military and civilian applications. There's one whole section on how
automakers see radar as "the next big thing in safety," discussing
pre-collision warning systems, blindspot watchers and adaptive cruise
control.

Stealth Ships
06/10/2004 09:52 AM
The Beeb has a short profile
of the upcoming 'stealth ships' being designed by various world navies
(including the U.S. and its DD(X) destroyers), focussing specifically
on the Swedes' carbon fiber Visby Corvette, an angular low-profile (to
radar and otherwise) ship with, among other innovations, includes a
retractable 57mm cannon. Although there are many criticisms about
building a 73-meter ship out of carbon fiber, some have questioned the
Swedish Navy's decision to use Windows NT to control the operation of
the ship, especially since, you know, that'
s gone so well before. (I know it's a cheap shot, but I saw the
story on Slashdot; I caught the open sores).

Business Blogs Under The Radar
Business Blogs Under The Radar
01/28/2004 04:39 AMAs you may or may not know,
Techdirt's business is providing
companies with daily corporate intelligence (news, analysis, trends -
all customized specifically to their needs) and we do so in the blog
format. We've been doing this for years, and so when it's considered
"the next big thing in the corporate environment" we always laugh a
little. The "blog" shouldn't be the focus. The focus should be on
the value people get out of the content in the system - and not the
system itself. The vast majority of our customers have no clue what a
"blog" is - and yet some could make a reasonable claim at being early
"business blogging" adopters by hiring us. Thus, I wish that this
Computerworld article focused a little more on the benefits, and a
little less on blogging itself, but on the whole, it's not a bad
description of
how blogs are finding their ways into business settings. Yes,
it does include a couple quotes from me, though never actually
mentions what Techdirt does. The article also includes two sidebars,
one that contains
another quote from me (along with one
from Ross Mayfield) and a second one which describes
the benefits of a business blog. That second
sidebar seems to be taken almost word for word from our own whitepaper
on enterprise blogging (available for
free download) though
without giving us any credit at all, which I guess means that those of
us who wrote the whitepaper have now officially (if without credit)
written for Computerworld Magazine.

Radar Violators in Florida
Radar Violators in Florida
02/01/2005 09:13 PM Someone may be using illegal 5 GHz equipment near a Florida air base:
A reader sent in a link to this Associated Press story and assumed--as
one might--that the military got it wrong and was making literally a
federal case out of legitimate use. But the band cited by the Eglin
Air Force Base spokesperson, 5.6 to 5.8 GHz, contains part of the
range opened by the military through the FCC in Nov. 2003 with some
provisos. Someone might be misusing it. Any device using the
5.250-5.350 GHz band (available for a while) or the 5.470-5.725 GHz
band (new as of Nov. 2003) must avoid stepping on existing signals and
back down power to only use as strong a signal as is needed at any
given time. It's possible that someone is using a 5 GHz channel that
was previously assigned in the 5.725-5.825 GHz band. Since those were
intended for outdoor point-to-point use and don't require the limits
that are defined for two of the three lower bands, it might be legal
and unintentional. Or they're using equipment not approved for use in
the US or have modified US-licensed equipment. Or, even, it's very
sloppy out-of-band spillover....
