Apple Raises Bar on Portability, Price,

Apple Raises Bar on Portability, Price,
and Features in a Home Gateway
06/07/2004 03:46 PM
AirPort Express from Apple puts audio, print spooler, bridging, and Ethernet in one tiny package: Apple has released a seven-ounce home Wi-Fi gateway that's barely larger than a power adapter. The AirPort Express works with any Wi-Fi device, but it particularly supports streaming music through a built-in analog and digital audio jack and USB printer spooling through a built-in USB port on certain later release of Mac OS X and Windows XP and 2000. The small device runs 802.11g with full WPA support, and handles bridging via Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Apple guarantees WDS will work only with its own devices. The AirPort Express can act as an access point and bridge at the same time. Apple's free iTunes software for Mac and Windows will have a small update this week to handle choosing a particular AirPort Express base station's attached stereo or powered speakers. The AirPort Express raises the bar on features, as it combines print spooling, audio streaming, and WDS in one form factor. Similar features are available from many other manufacturers, but typically only as a single device (audio/photo/MPEG streaming only) or with limitations, like Linksys's WRT54G which can either bridge or be an AP, but not both. It remains to be seen whether Apple can find a broader audience for its product with a $129 price tag when it ships in July, but its combination of portability and plugs might push it into the forefront of both the home market and the roaming traveler's world....

Apple Hopes to Lower iPod Price

Apple Hopes to Lower iPod Price 06/14/2004 08:06 AM

ipod imageSo apparently during the summoning of Steve Jobs at the "D: All Things Demonic" conference last week, gygaxian Wall Street Journal incantor Walt Mossberg asked the fell creature about Apple's positioning of a low-end Mac, to which Jobs, snorting fire, replied, "We said we're going to invest in the iPod rather than a PDA and we also said it looks a lot like a $400 computer. And for us the volume is pretty good, so yes. But we want to make them cheaper still. I mean, we're not happy with iPods costing $300 and $400 and we want to keep driving the prices down on them so we're working very hard on that."

So there you go -- all it takes is a salted pentagram and a few natural 20s and we've summoned ourselves some cheaper iPods.

Also, someone told there's a country called 'Europe' somewhere on an island in the Atlantic and that Apple will be launching iTunes Music Store there tomorrow. I hear some people there don't even speak English -- how will they know what Beyonce is singing?! What a strange, wonderful world we live in.

iPod Hasn't Paid The Piper Yet

James Dean died in a Porsche and boosted
sales; what about JFK, Jr. and Piper?
03/17/2005 03:24 AM

At the Ralph Lauren car exhibit at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, which opens to non-members on March 6, a plaque next to a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder contains the following:

"In September 1955 legendary actor James Dean ... crashed his new 550 Spyder and was killed.  This tragic event immortalized the Porsche name and transformed a relatively small company into a very big business."

So... if it worked for Porsche with James Dean, how come it didn't work for Piper when JFK, Jr. crashed his Saratoga?  If anything you'd expect the truck-like family man's 6-seater Saratoga to have fared better than the rear-engined Porsche, which was notorious for hard-to-handle oversteer.

[Don't rush down to the MFA to see this exhibit.  There are much more interesting car collections at a lot of the U.S.'s car museums, including the one 30 miles west in Stow, Massachusetts at the Collings Foundation.]

Apple Wants 10% Of Any Made For iPod
Product Sales

Apple Wants 10% Of Any Made For iPod
Product Sales
03/17/2005 03:26 AM
There have been a number of stories lately about the economy built around the iPod, with a ton of accessories on the market thanks to this one single device. Back in January, Apple announced that it was going to start a "Made for iPod" marketing program that would let accessory makers add a special logo to their products or marketing materials. What wasn't reported, however, was that Apple wants 10% of the wholesale price on any "made for iPod" products (backed down from 10% of the retail price). This sort of thing isn't that uncommon, but taking 10% just so you can use an specific logo seems a bit steep. What's to stop a company from just pointing out that their product was made to work with the Apple iPod -- without using the specific trademarked phrase of logo?
