Anyone watching the emergence of Microsoft's Xbox and its accompanying Xbox Live online gaming service will have been amazed at the barefaced u-turn MS made regarding uses for both the console and its Internet functionality. As the machine emerged, closely followed by the impressively robust online service, the world was promised that the entire project would only ever feature gaming and be totally dedicated to this cause.

Project Gotham Racing 2 fans will soon have some new cars to park in their garage. A forum post on the Web site of Bizarre Creations, the game's developer, revealed today that a second "booster pack" for the game will be available for download soon on Xbox Live. According to the post, the pack will feature eight tracks inside the new city of Long Beach, California. "Middle-of-the-road dividers, abrupt elevation changes, long sweeping straights and kudos-generating hairpins turn this into one of the most varied, rewarding and challenging cities in the PGR series," read the post which mentioned Long Beach landmarks such as the Convention Center, the Westin, and the famously sun-bathed Ocean Drive.

pac_pg3000.jpgPantech & Curitel have announced the 'Power-Pixel' series phones, the PG-3000 [pictured] and GF-500. The PG3000 is a dual-band slider that's as brick-like as they come, while the GF500 is a tri-band, flip-phone model. Both include a 1.3-megapixel camera, which while decent, is hardly approaching 'power.' Nevertheless, these aren't flagship phones for the company, but instead a couple of models which will be first introduced to the Russian market.

I've been messing around with disk arrays for uncompressed high definition video capture and editing, and I've put together this disk array for my Mac G5 that has sustained read speeds of about 575 MB/sec (yes, that's megaBYTES/sec), has 2.7 terabytes of formatted usable capacity....and costs less than $3000. Most other vendors charge $8000 to $15000 for that kind of storage capacity and throughput, and most aren't capable of moving over half a gigabyte of data each second.

Blowback: The Cost And Consequences of
American Empire plus War And Conflict In
The Post-Cold War, Post-9/11 Era
03/13/2003 10:25 AM
Chalmers Johnson is an provocative proponent of the American Empire theory, indeed. Here are excerpts from his Blow Back: The Cost And Consequences of American Empire

I heard Johnson interviewed on Episode II, War And Conflict In The Post-Cold War, Post-9/11 Era of The Whole Wide World

The Cold War and its central conflict - the physical and ideological battles between the United States, the Soviet Union and their proxy states - imposed a certain logic and consistency on the world. Take that away and add the bloody wars in the Balkans, Africa and the Middle East in the ‘90s as well as the terror attacks and warnings of more recent times and you get a very confused picture of a world at war. Is this breaking storm in Iraq about oil, democracy, freedom, empire, culture, water, diamonds, modernizing Islam or nation building in the Middle East? Some, one or all of these things?

It was an excellent program and well worth your listen, either by RA now or mp3 later. (From listening to the radio)

Golden knobs and retro displays will cost you real money, though, as each of the amps sitting around $3,600.

First of all I caution all of you that are not computer experts to proceed at your own risk. It appears Microsoft is reporting that if you have Service Pack 2 Release Candidate 2 installed you can merrily surf along with Internet Explorer.

Bur the 2nd service pack for Windows XP is just that a release candidate still under test and while it probably would not break your installation of windows it could screw up a some of your programs. Companies that are affected by changes to XP from the service pack are rushing to update their products so that they can be ready when Microsoft releases the Service Pack for the average user. Aliencamel.com announces that the email-storage-space race is over. This race was started by Google's Gmail service offering 1GB of storage. AlienCamel has gone the final step and is now offering its users unlimited storage. By removing limits on space, users now have a simple, low-cost service which will keep their emails safe, secure and backed up forever. AlienCamel has implemented the most sophisticated anti-spam filtering and email-virus-blocking technology over the last 18 months. Now, AlienCamel is the first independent commercial email service in the world to offer "unlimited storage for personal email". [PRWEB Aug 17, 2004]

Yahoo Becomes an RSS Directory!

Yahoo Becomes an RSS Directory! 02/18/2004 11:57 AM

Gary "How-Does-He-Find-the-Time-to-Maintain-ResourceShelf?" Price kept me busy on IM this morning showing me all kinds of wonderful Yahoo things. The first, of course, is the big news that Yahoo no longer uses Google as its search engine. While this would be big in-and-of-itself, the content of the new search results are what's so intriguing to me.

Gary suggested I do a search for "shifted librarian," and sure enough my site came up as the first hit. But look what's in the result:

Yahoo results that
show add to myyahoo link

So Yahoo has connected its beta news aggregator to its search engine and the database behind it and then some. In the immortal words of Neo, "Whoa!"

Now go to Yahoo and do a search for CNN or the Chicago Tribune or most other BigPub sources. Notice that there's no link to "Add to My Yahoo." How long do you suppose it will be until they notice this?

Now do a search for ABC News. They have a bunch of RSS feeds, but they don't come up in Yahoo's results. I did a searcj for Suburban Library System and we come up first, but they don't show our feed, either. It will be interesting to see how well Yahoo can keep up as an RSS directory. It's a shame Yahoo can't partner with Syndic8 for this since they're already doing such a great job of it.

Do Atom feeds show up and can they be added to My Yahoo, or is this functionality Google is missing the boat on by restricting Blogger blogs to Atom and not offering a parallel RSS feed?

In addition, Gary notes Yahoo's SmartSort personal shopping assistant. Give it a whirl if you haven't, because the sliders on it let you pick which options are important to help limit search results. It's incredibly slick, and the results change in real-time as you move the sliders. Not only do the results change, but the descriptions of the products themselves change depending on what you changed with the sliders.

As Gary noted to me, something like this could be quite valuable in library search results. For example, the user could move the slider to indicate that books are important or full-text articles or images and on and on. When I saw this, I immediately thought how useful this would be for reader's advisory! Example: what is important to you about mysteries - location? type? protagonist? etc.

Oh to be a programmer with the time to create these kinds of resources!

Yahoo 360 is putting Copyright 2005
Yahoo on Personal Blog Entries
03/30/2005 01:16 AM

It was brought to my attention today that Yahoo is copyrighting the RSS feeds for those that are setting up Yahoo 360 accounts. Some are already refusing to use the service because in a sense Yahoo now owns your content.

This may be a oversight on Yahoo's part and I hope it is, I will probaly use their service anyway but probably not the blog portion and give them some time to answer these issues. [Yahoo 360 Copyrights Personal RSS Feeds]

In Classification fun: where does your weblog belong?, John Roberts responds to my response to his earlier post (will someone build a threaded aggregator already?!) and digs deeper into blog classification: When you search for John Roberts, you will get this blog as the only result. Hey, at least it's included. But you don't get the category placement as a navigation hint, which was one of the original innovations at Yahoo. You do for Zawodny and a few other well-known...
