Mobile Phone Birth Control
Mobile Phone Birth Control
03/06/2004 02:05 AMMissed this one when it first came out, but thanks to Charles W. for
submitting this bit of satire, poking fun at the trend these days to
build all sorts of extra add-ons to mobile phones. While the writer
comes up with a bunch, the main focus of the article is
mobile phone
birth control, which is described as working by projecting "a
high-intensity ultra-sonic electromagnetic "sound cone" that is
inaudible to the human ear but fatal to any sperm cell within a range
of six meters." Even better, the user doesn't have to do anything, as
it will work automatically at the necessary moment: "You don't need to
even turn it on. It's voice-activated. You place it near the bed, or
any other site of amorous activity. You can even hang the mobile phone
around one partner's neck. Then, as soon as someone yells, 'Oh, God!
Oh, God!' — or anything like it — the Nippit sound cone activates,
sending out deadly waves of spermicidal ultra-sonic electromagnetism.
Any sperm that shows its little head is a goner before he can finish
his first wiggle." Of course, like all contraceptives, it's not
foolproof: "if an incoming phone call arrives at the "moment of
truth," diverting the handset's attention, a pregnancy could result."
A bit of Friday evening satire to send you off into the weekend...

03/13/2003 10:22 AMWith the recent proliferation of camera phones and hiptops, I
figured it was only a matter of time before slick tools came out to
support them. I've heard about all sorts of home-brew solutions, but
pop2blog looks like the
first generic mobblog solution, and it seems general enough to work
with camera phones and plain email as well.
It's interesting that the integration of blogging tools with email
services is just happening now, when many blog authors and app
developers are getting devices that rely on email for getting messages
and photos out. For at least the past two years, I've often
encountered people new to weblogs, but experts in computing and the
internet ask for email-to-blog functionality in all their tools. This
is especially true in the business world, where email has been a
mainstay, and blogging is nascent. And for some people, email
is their preferred interface for all online
transactions, and they're surprised when they hear that built-in
support for email-to-blog posting is almost entirely nonexistent.
I know that bridging the protocols and standards between email and
web-based blog applications isn't the easiest thing to accomplish, but
why weren't developers listening to their users for the past couple
years?

Conscience Clauses and Health Care --
"Yes, we need
to respect individual freedom of religion. But at what point does it
cross the line of not providing essential medical care? At what point
is it malpractice?" she asked. "If someone's beliefs
interfere with practicing their profession, perhaps they should do
something else."
The Protection of Conscience Project feels differently:
Protection of Conscience Laws are needed because powerful interests
are inclined to force health care workers and others to participate,
directly or indirectly, in morally controversial procedures, while
NARAL says:
... Many of these clauses go far beyond respecting individuals'
beliefs to the point of harming women by not providing them with full
information or access to medical treatment. Medicine, not ideology,
should determine medical decisions. brianstorms webl0g: An Offer I Couldn't

Pricing Study
"From Ipsos-Insights TEMPO
(cited last week in some circles) : Consumers
Expect Substantial Savings On Digitally Distributed Albums
'Regardless of downloading experience, American Internet users aged
12 and older stated an acceptable price range of $9.99 to $14.99 for a
new, full-length physical CD release. In contrast, the acceptable
price range for a digitally distributed, full-length album download is
only between $5.00 and $9.99 roughly $5.00 less than for a
physical CD. These findings are based on recent interviews conducted
with a representative U.S. sample of 488 Internet users aged 12 and
over.
'A roughly $5.00 decrease in the range of acceptable prices for a
new, full length album distributed digitally versus in a physical
format represents a significant decrease in perceived value for this
product based solely on format or distribution method,' stated Matt
Kleinschmit, a director of research at Ipsos-Insight, and the
studys author.' " [Furdlog]

The Los Angeles Times goes
multimedia. For the past few weeks, the LA Times has begun a
significant push into offering video, audio, and interactive Flash on
their website. One of the most interesting aspects is that the paper
has moved one step beyond simply replaying AP Television clips as many
sites have done; the LA Times writers are stand before the cameras and
microphones themselves and report stories in a stuttering,
non-hairsprayed, introverted demeanor that I find very refreshing,
though so far I have gleaned very little additional information from
it. When does (or can) this mode of journalism on the web rise above
gimmickry or 'just because we can' and add value to a written article?
Can video/tv news rise above mere spectacle?
