Town of Bourton's miniature model has a
miniature model of the model (and so on)
12/23/2003 11:30 PM
Mark Bourne says: So my wife Elizabeth and I are googling up possibilities for our long trip to England next year. Checking out London sites and so on. An acquaintance suggested staying for a few days in the Cotswolds, a scenic Middle Earthy region west of London. That's how we found a page about the town of Bourton.

You just gotta love this text, which blends Ye Olde Scepter'd Isle with sci-fi gee-wizardry:

You will probably have noticed that when you take a branch from certain trees (some conifers for example), the branch looks like a miniature version of the tree, and when you break a piece off the branch, that looks like a tree too. Mathematicians call this property self-similarity.

Bourton has a wonderful example of self-similarity: it contains a 1/10 scale model of itself. Because the 1/10 scale model is a complete model of the town, it must contain a model of itself, and it does, a 1/100th. scale model of Bourton, and because the 1/100th. scale model is also a complete model of Bourton, it must also contain a 1/1000th. scale model of the scale model of the scale model of Bourton.

And it does. It is only a matter of time before a team of nano-technicians turn up in the town to etch a sub-micron scale model of Bourton on a silicon wafer, complete with mill, waterwheel, and a highly imaginative interpretation of the River Windrush as a stream of electrons.

Enterprises Still Pay More

Enterprises Still Pay More 02/01/2005 09:13 PM
With consumer 802.11g costing below $70 for good gear, enterprise APs still run you more than $400 with discounts: There is, of course, a price premium you pay for devices that handle VLAN switching, multiple broadcast SSIDs, and other enterprise-related features. But the difference between the underlying silicon is pretty small (or non-existent) these days. You're paying a large differential for brand, service, support, integration, firmware, and the firmware's hooks for management. And switch AP cost even more but provide more flexibility, which should lessen server-room and management costs....

802.1X in the Spotlight at Enterprises

802.1X in the Spotlight at Enterprises 03/14/2005 05:46 PM
The 802.1X protocol for authenticating users and restricting access is starting to hit the big time: This long feature, which I wrote for Mobile Pipeline, walks through how the 802.1X specification works, how it can be secured, and what benefits it is bringing to businesses and academic institutions that want to segregate traffic, control access, and provide a high level of security to their wireless links. After talking to vendors and customers, it's clear that all the pieces needed to make 802.1X a consistently deployed, secure, successful method of authentication are in place. Even better, 802.1X can secure wired and wireless networks with equal ease, preventing rogue access points, unauthorized Ethernet users, and even sticking virus-infected legitimate users on special VLANs to solve their problems before they hit the LAN....

Managing 802.11b Risk for Enterprises

Managing 802.11b Risk for Enterprises 05/23/2004 09:00 PM
Enterprises are reacting sensibly to the issue of low-speed (20 Mbps or slower) Wi-Fi interference techniques documented by Australian researchers: It's not so much a flaw as a part of the spec that allows a certain kind of attack to disable an access point; there are many others of varying degree of severity, too, including just bringing an unpleasant 2.4 GHz cordless phone into an office and leaving it turned on without a connection to a cordless base station. The reaction cited in this Computerworld article is sensible: managers are examining their risk and noting that with many access points, an attacker would have to attack numerous locations at once to have an effect, and would then be vulnerable to physical detection. All 802.11a and any 802.11g networks running at faster encodings (using OFDM) can't be attacked in this fashion, either....

“Widespread reports of spyware and other malicious code penetrating enterprise networks don’t seem to reflect the experiences of those surveyed by a New York research firm. Only about a quarter of businesses recognized spyware as a major problem. Ninety percent also saw no security risk in instant messaging, and 80% saw no threat from personal e-mail accounts. The responses were a bit surprising to Myron Kerstetter, senior vice president of TheInfoPro Inc. He interviewed 111…

Social Tools for Enterprises Symposium

Social Tools for Enterprises Symposium 05/27/2004 03:14 PM

I know there's not much time - but I deplore the conference advisors and sponsors to NOT make this just like every other day-long symposium you've ever attended.  Make it something special, something different, for the children - if for no other reason - to leave them a legacy of innovation.

And mention FOAF!  Hopefully by then the FOAFnet will be interopping away.

So cial Tools for Enterprises Symposium.

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away…

bloomsbury Actually on 11 May 2004, Matt Mower ‘IM’ed me that he and Paolo Valdemarin (both of evectors and k-collector fame) had been talking about arranging a “Social Networking for Enterprises” event in London.

They were inspired by the fact that both Stowe Boyd and I are going to be in Nice, France to present at the iDate conference on 15-16 July 2004. Stowe and I had both, separately, expressed our individual interests in getting together with our EU cohort for some type of event.

Subsequently, on 18 May 2004, there was an IRC chat with a number of folks—including Matt Mower, Marc Canter, Martin Roell, Ross Mayfield (host of the Social Tools for Enterprises Symposium Socialtext space), Paolo Valdemarin, Lilia Efimova, Lee Bryant, Suw Charman, a number of others, and myself. Since that day—many emails and IM chats later—this event has really begun to take shape. Largely thanks to the un-flagging efforts of Matt Mower. Go Matt!

In London, on 12 July 2004, there will be an “event aimed to be a practical get go for CxO’s in Enterprises as to how social tools & methods can help them with problems like insufficient collaboration, low innovation and unmanaged risk” according to some early thoughts from Matt Mower’s weblog

Stowe posts a link to the venue information for this London Symposium, scheduled to take place at the Bloomsbury Square Training Centre and which is now being organized by KM Cluster.

More as the date continues to draw nearer… (-:=
