Ecto for Windows launches, BoingBoing
now a 100% Ecto bl0g!
04/14/2004 12:49 AMThe popular blogging-aid software Ecto -- once only offered for Mac --
is now available for Windows users. With today's launch of Ecto for
Windows, BoingBoing officially becomes an all-ecto blog! My BoingBoing
co-editors all use it to make blogging with Movable Type more friendly
and efficient. I'm the only PC-afflicted blogger in the bunch.
TypePad, MovableType, Nucleus, and Blogger users: rejoice. Ecto
co-creator Adriaan Tijsseling
says:
Joi and me are very happy to
announce the release of a beta of a Windows port of ecto, thanks to a
unique collaboration with Alex Hung. It is our hope that with this
collaboration the ease of use and features of ecto will now be
available to the Windows users.
The beta trial will last one month, during which we hope to find bugs
and improve on the product with the help of user feedback. Any
information about this beta will be on the ecto for Windows webpage as
Alex will be the main responsible person for this Windows version.

Roland Tanglao congratulates Adriaan Tijsseling (I do
too!)
Go Adriaan go! In 2004, I don't know why this is so difficult,
I mean how old is Dreamweaver? Anyways, I am glad ecto is raising the
bar finally in blog writing software.
From ecto blog: Can you
spell 'WYSIWYAG'?:
QUOTE
This is a draft in Rich Text
editing mode. One can switch from Rich to HTML and back indefinitely.
In the Rich Text mode, a series of buttons will appear to easily allow
setting the various font and paragraph peculiarities (alignment,
indentation, cursive, bold, underline, strike-through, font-color,
background color, font face). The buttons are modelled after Panther's
neat Font panel, which obviously also has effect here. Don't mind the
gray background color, that's fully customizable. By default
background is white and foreground is black.
Note the highlighted square in the corner of the attached image.
It's the resize knob to give users basic control over the size of the
image. To control more options, double-clicking the attachment will
reveal the attachment settings sheet.
There's not really much to it, I guess, but it should make writing
blog entries a bit more easier, especially for those who don't care or
know much about HTML.

02/10/2004 02:53 AMSo, I finally bit the bullet and paid for Ecto, the most excellent
upgrade to Adriaan Tijsseling's Kung Log. No longer donationware
(which I expect most people donated--I admit, alas, that I didn't) but
payware with a two-week trial period. And I have to say... this is
darned sweet. Being able to manage multiple blogs at once (with the
odd blip here and there--drafts don't store which account they were
associated with so far as I can see) is really nice, especially now
that we're looking at using Movable Type as an in-house project
support tool. Using MT certainly beats...

ecto, the blogging client
developed by Adriaan at my
company Kula has just released the beta of the next version which has
"What You See Is Almost What You Get" (wysiawyg). This means that you
can now do things like drag, drop, resize images into posts. You can
also create links, change font information and lots of other stuff
without looking at or dealing with html. (More info on the
ecto blog.) ecto 2.0 has a bunch of other cool features. Adriaan
says it should be ready for general release of the OS X version in
about two weeks. Until then... gloat.. gloat...

Giving Ecto a try
Giving Ecto a try
02/10/2004 02:44 AMJust downloaded Ado's update to Kung-Log, called Ecto. Seems to have a nice
and easy set up, and the posting interface appears pretty clean.
Automatic spell-checking is there as well, which is a nice feature
too. If only it wasn't only available for this lousy Mac hardware. I've said it before and I'll say it again: If
IBM and Apple teamed up and released OSX on a Thinkpad T40, I'd buy one in
a heartbeat.
Anyway, that's not Ecto's fault. Kudos to Adriaan on a job well
done.

Cory Doctorow:
All four Boing Boing editors use Ecto, a blogging sool, to post and
manage our material here. Today, a public beta of Ecto 2 launches, a
major update that I'm excited as hell to get my hands on.
The basic idea behind ecto's WYSIAWYG is to offer users the ability to
compose entries without having to bother with HTML tags. Since most
blog entries are not complete web sites, composition of entries only
allows font and paragraph changes, indentation (read "blockquote"),
and obviously images (video and audio should follow shortly).
Regarding image authoring I had two ways of implementing support for
it. I tried the extreme version involving containers and layouts but
that produced quite a bit of headache and would slow down typesetting
too much. Considering that Tiger's WebKit will allow editing, I chose
the easier route. Images can still be positioned and resized in place,
but text flow is not what you will see. That's one reason for the 'A'
in WYSIAWYG... 'almost' (If your entry fails to post, read "Got"
instead of "Get"...).

ecto Makes Me Happy Again
ecto Makes Me Happy Again
03/14/2005 05:09 PM Adriaan changed ecto so that it works with Drupal's
input filters better, and after finally getting around to downloading
and testing it I must say, it works like a charm. The caveat being
you have to name your input filter either "Textile" or "Markdown" and
if you do something like chain the filters in Drupal so that both work
in one filter then it obviously won't know, etc. But for sites like
this where I've named the filter after what it is, it's golden.
So, thank you, Adriaan.
And for Mr. Walker's statements about the
blogapi.module I'll happily start filing bug reports on
it as I figure out what's wrong. It wouldn't take much effort at all
to get this working properly and then, well, sheer bliss when it does.

A weblogging tool, Ecto, has a new feature: Movie upload. It offers users an
option to indicate how an uploaded movie is used in the weblog (blog)
entry. There are two options: Ecto creates a link to the movie inside
your blog entry. The second option: the movie is then inserted right
into your blog entry. [Roland

- Added: Generic "Date" column to news item list, which
contains pubDate if it exists, received date otherwise. This new
column isthe only date column shown by default - both the "received"
and "published" columns are hidden. This also affects the default
sorting and grouping (both are now set to the generic date), which may
change how you're used to seeing news items sorted.
- Changed:
The default newspaper filter is now "Unread News" instead of "Today's
News"
- Changed: The default value for automatically marking
items as read has changed from five seconds to three
seconds
- Changed: The cleanup wizard now remembers your
selections
- Changed: Double-clicking a news item navigates the
news item's link if the item newspaper is showing, otherwise it
re-displays the news item newspaper (change in RC3's
behavior)
- Fixed: FeedDemon now correctly handles
xml:base in Atom entries and passes all the link tests at

and

FeedDemon: What's in a Name?
FeedDemon: What's in a Name?
06/05/2005 11:08 PMEvery now and then I'll receive an email from someone stating that
they really like FeedDemon, but they won't buy it because of the word
"demon" in its name. The majority of these comments come from
reasonable, sincere people whose beliefs cause them to be turned off
by the demon imagery, and while my personal beliefs don't include
angels or demons, I do take these comments seriously and I certainly
don't want my choice of name to be a stumbling block.
For the record, the name "FeedDemon" originated as a play on the
phrase "speed demon," simply because I worked so hard to make sure
FeedDemon was faster than the competition. Of course, the FeedDemon
logo does
include a demonic-looking hand catching a fireball, but I never even
considered that it would offend people, any more than I would think
the logo for Dirt Devil vacuum
cleaners would cause controversy.
I hesitated to make this post because any mention of religion
usually brings out the wackos on both sides (believers and
non-believers alike), but I am curious whether many people feel this
way. If you're among those who can't comment about religion without
being intolerant to those who believe differently, this isn't the
place for you to vent. But if you have a respectful comment, I'd love
to hear it regardless of whether I agree.

06/07/2004 05:42 AMI'm pleased to announce the final release of FeedDemon 1.10. Among
the highlights in this new release are:
- Support for
Atom feeds
- A new integrated web
search
- The ability to search previously
downloaded feed items
- Improved browser features such
as popup blocking and form
auto-completion
- Enhanced grouping
and styling of feed items
In addition to these "big" new features, version 1.10 offers a
lot of smaller tweaks that really boost FeedDemon's
usability. A complete list of what's new can be found in the release
notes, but be sure to watch the FeedDemon Tips blog
over the next week since we'll be highlighting a number of new
features that you might overlook.
If you already own FeedDemon 1.0, the upgrade to version 1.10 is
free - just download the new trial
version and install it on top of the previous version, and you're
set to go. Your serial number, channel subscriptions and other
information will all be retained.
My thanks and appreciation go to everyone who not only tested
FeedDemon, but also stuck with me during that nasty little episode
with the neck surgery. A couple months back I had no idea when I'd be
able to get FeedDemon 1.10 out the door, so I'm really glad to
announce that it's done :)

about 1.10.

Bradbury, FeedDemon developer, has posted his thoughts on the
subject of Atom and valid XML: “FeedDemon will also support
Atom, but if an Atom feed isn’t well-formed XML, FeedDemon will
display an error rather than try to parse it.”
This reminds me of another point—NetNewsWire’s
error-reporting user interface isn’t that good. I plan to
improve it, to make errors more obvious. I’m also considering a
preference where you could tell the RSS parser to require valid XML.

FeedDemon, RSS and cookies
08/18/2004 10:25 AMI've recently had a a few people ask whether FeedDemon supports the
use of cookies, and the answer is, "yes, it does."
The most obvious use of this is to require a login before returning
any information, and I've seen this done by several feeds already.
Unfortunately, some of them redirect to an HTML page when the login
cookie isn't found, which obviously won't work since FeedDemon is
trying to download RSS, not HTML. So, if you use cookie-based
authentication, don't redirect to an HTML page - instead, dynamically
create an RSS <item> which includes a link to the login
page.
