After reading the /. story about IBM trying to build a 100TB tape drive, I found myself over on Pricewatch.com (which lamely uses frames and makes it hard to bookmark the page I want you to see). I like figuring out three things: Where's the current sweet spot in SATA drive prices?250GB for $120 How much does a Terabyte cost?$480 buys you four 250GB disk How much space can $1000 buy?2TB and you'd have money left over to pay for...

Time To Drop Song Download Costs

Time To Drop Song Download Costs 09/20/2004 03:07 PM
We've been waiting patiently for the inevitable price war to break out in the online music download store world, but so far it's (mostly) held up due to the high fees the recording industry continues to charge. Now, Newsweek's tech columnist Steven Levy, is pointing out that if the recording industry dropped their fees, they'd sell a lot more music. He thinks that sooner or later, the industry has to realize that they'll do even better if prices are cheaper. He points to Real Networks' experience (which is a bit skewed since it was a promotional plan) in dropping the price by half -- but which allowed them to sell six times as many songs. If this ratio were to hold (a big "if" obviously, since it assumes people will spend more overall) then the industry would end up making a lot more money by cutting their price -- but, instead, of course, they're all looking for ways to raise prices or force people to buy bad songs to get good songs.

This Week In Mobiles: Take One

This Week In Mobiles: Take One 07/30/2004 08:55 AM

What's happening in the mobile world this week? Something! I use arrows because they are neat. In coming weeks they might have meaning!

Samsung - About to beat Motorola for the Number Two spot in global phone sales. [Reuters]
Sony Ericsson - Second quarter profits were higher than expected and new phones with potential smells like a good week, and a little like fish, but that's normal. [Reuters]
Nokia - Stabilized their slipping market share, which is plus plus, but has yet to announce a phone that sets consumers salivating. [Reuters]
DoCoMo - Declining net profit from falling monthly rate prices muted a general increase in subscriptions. Still launching cutting edge phones, though; Talks of i-Mode in UK. [AFP]
Motorola - Losing 2nd place to Samsung is, well, sucky, but the launch of the RAZR V3 and other hot handsets this week puts them back in the running for Cellphones We'd Actually Buy [Gizmodo]
Vodafone - Admits bid for AT&T Wireless hurt stock prices. [TechWeb]

VoIP - Plan A vs Plan B

VoIP - Plan A vs Plan B 03/06/2004 01:56 AM
2003 was a remarkable year in the US for voice over the internet (VoIP). If you needed a label for the events of the year, "Collapse of Denial" would be a good one -- after a long period of relative inaction, the FCC and the state regulators are suddenly pushing hard for a regulatory framework. The question is no longer whether voice is going to become an internet application, but when. "When" could still be a very long time, however. The incumbent local phone companies -- Verizon, SBC, BellSouth and Qwest -- have various degrees of interest in VoIP, but are loathe to embrace it quickly or completely, because doing so means admitting to everyone -- shareholders, regulators, customers -- that both monopoly control and artificially high voice revenues are going away. (The fact that this is true does not much lessen the pain of saying so.) As a result, they will likely try to convince regulatory agencies, both the FCC and the states', to burden competitive VoIP firms like Vonage with additional costs and rules, while delaying their own offerings. Complicating this de facto Plan A, however, is the fact that VoIP isn't a service, it's just a set of protocols, meaning that competitors don't have to buy into Plan A to deploy it. If Plan A is "Replace the phone system slowly and from within," Plan B is far more radical: "Replace the phone system. Period." - More at http://www.shirky.com/writings/voip_a_b.txt

T-Mobile Europe Launches Integrated,
Unlimited Wi-Fi, 3G Plan
07/19/2004 01:19 PM
The plan costs £70 for unlimited cell and Wi-Fi, with the first three months free: T-Mobile says the 3G side will run just 128 Kbps right now, but eventually ramp up to true 3G speeds of 384 Kbps. The press release talks about a 3G card, and doesn't specifically address whether Wi-Fi is incorporate. The card comes as part of the £199 setup price, and will seamlessly switch between 2.5G (GPRS) and 3G. Seamless switching to Wi-Fi isn't mentioned. T-Mobile UK has 500 locations in its network, while T-Mobile as a whole has 7,000, which must be counting the 4,000-plus in the U.S. It's not mentioned, but roaming to non-T-Mobile UK locations must not be included in the unlimited pricing....

A war without a plan 12/27/2004 07:17 PM
Critics of Donald Rumsfeld's Department of Defense have long alleged that military planners didn't prepare for the occupation of Iraq, and now a military planner himself is saying the same thing. In an unpublished report, covered by the Washington Post, Maj. Isasiah Wilson III, a military historian who helped devise the Pentagon's Iraq strategy, writes that the Defense Department never had a plan for "Phase IV" -- the period of occupation and reconstruction that would, in theory, have won the peace.

Okay, trusting that Leo's right and the python engine's good about not leaving things on the stack at label boundaries, I've reworked the architecture of the translator program. A new version's up, and I'll explain later. (Though it's probably reasonably obvious what it does) It won't run, but adding in new python bytecode processing ops is trivial and, happily, diff/patch able.
