CARRY FotoBar Updated 06/01/2004 09:08 AM

carry_fotobar.jpg imageTaiwanese CARRY Computer has a updated to their combination DVD+R player/CD-RW/flash card reader called the 'FotoBar' that is designed primarily to burn data from memory cards onto CDs or DVDs. You can also hook the FotoBar up to your PC via USB 2.0 to act as a regular card reader or burner. In addition, you can even throw MPEG and DivX files onto the FotoBar and play them through its S-Video or Composite outs. An LCD screen would be nice, of course, but as a hybrid device it's pretty intriguing. The FotoBar will support SD/MMC/Memory Stick (and Pro)/Smart Media/CF/and optionally xD.

Dean can't carry the south. The New Republic's Jonathan Chait writes in response to Dean's flag gaffe: "What's alarming here is not that Dean wants to win votes from guys with Confederate flags on their pickup trucks. It's that he thinks he actually can... His aggressive secularism, association with civil unions, and antiwar stance all make him culturally anathema in the South. This is one of the many, many reasons Dean would be squashed like a bug in the general election if nominated: Bush could take the South for granted, and concentrate all his resources on battleground states like Pennsylvania. Contrast this with the thoughts of security spokesmouth Bruce Schneier (link below) - "My objection to the national ID card is much simpler. It won't work."

Pretec 2GB MMC 4 Flash Memory Card

Pretec 2GB MMC 4 Flash Memory Card 06/01/2004 10:29 AM

pretecmmc4.jpg imagePretec has announced what they are calling the 'World's Fastest Flash Memory Card,' a 2GB giant that uses the MMC 4 spec to transfer 4-bits of data in parallel with write speeds up to 18MB/sec and read speeds of up to 22.5MB/sec. Even better, the card is backwards-compatible with previous SD/MMC devices, albeit at lower read/write speeds. To give you some perspective, those speeds would make the 2GB Pretec card about 200 percent faster than the fastest SD cards available on the market.

Exploring my new Siemens MC 60 mobile, I discovered an interesting feature. It has the ability to record small pieces of sound with its integrated microphone and store them as WAV files, so that you can use them later as personalized ring tones, etc...The recording feature made me think that I might use the mobile as a magnetic stripe reader, just like I did with computers with soundcards. After some tests I had successful results, so here is the process in case you are interested in doing the same.
Impressive.

New Group Established to Carry On SATA
Spec Development
09/11/2004 03:58 AM
Dedicated to sustaining the quality, integrity and dissemination of Serial ATA technology, 40 leading computer component and peripheral companies announced today the formation of the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO).

The new organization builds on a long heritage of effective Serial ATA (SATA) organizations starting with SATA 1.0 in early 2000, to SATA II in 2002 and now SATA-IO. The working group's transition to SATA-IO, a formal industry association, indicates the member companies' long-term commitment to continue delivering technology and high-quality specifications that meet the needs of a rapidly changing market.

The current SATA-IO technology roadmap includes enabling the 3Gb/s technology defined in the newest SATA spec, which was released in July. The group also plans to expand membership to include additional optical storage vendors, storage controller and hard drive vendors, system builders, storage semiconductor designers and computer technology designers.

Digimaster SD Card with USB Interface 12/24/2004 12:16 PM

digimaster_sdusb.jpg imageWow. I absolutely love this. Taiwanese OEM vendor Digimaster is releasing this SD Card that also has a USB 2.0 interface on the flip size, meaning you can use it in devices that support SD (cameras, phones, PDAs, etc.) and then flip it around and put it in a laptop or PC as a flash drive. And if I did the currency conversion correctly, the 256MB version will be only $40 or so. There might be a few devices these don't work with, but since the spring-loaded catch of SD cards is near the bottom (I think), it should work just fine in most slots. If it does work with my gear, I plan on stuffing my pockets with a few of these next year.

Both these new players look fine, too, as far as flash players are concerned, with MP3 and WMA support, simple displays, and USB 1.1 interfaces. Actually, now that I think about it, that's sort of wimpy. The main difference between the two models is that the EMP-110 has an integrated USB port, like a flash memory key drive, while the EMP-100 requires a separate cable. I4U has an EMP-100 in their review queue -- expect to see that soon.
