Bush, Defense Advisers Map Out Policy
(AP)
08/23/2004 08:39 AMAP - President Bush is mapping out defense strategy with his top
defense advisers as U.S. deaths in Iraq inch toward 1,000 and the
election campaign focuses intently on he and Democrat John Kerry's
credentials for keeping the nation safe.

Forward-looking defense policy from
Fafbl0g
08/22/2004 07:30 AMCory Doctorow: Fafblog -- the best political satire
on the net IMO -- just keeps hitting them out of the park, as with
this post on Bush's characterization of those who oppose the missile
shield as living in the past (and his implication that he is living in
the future):
Giblets is living even farther into the future, in a time when
terrorism and pinko-tyranny are both irrelevant! Giblets demands that
we spend 1.8 trillion dollars on an array of massive space lasers
pointed outward to defend Earth against the onslaught of immense
insectoid invaders who will strike from beyond the asteroid belt!
Giblets will not allow the tyrant Bug Emperor to lay its death spores
in our atmosphere - and the whiney pleas of those stuck formulating
"today's" foreign policy to secure the former Soviet nuclear stockpile
will not get in his way!
Once more Giblets outdoes George Bush at every turn! Whose vision is
grander? Who not only bypasses today's wars to fight what we think are
tomorrow's, but gives tomorrow a pass for sometime next week? The
answer is clear: Giblets!
LinkIn Defense of Dutch Drug Policy
In Defense of Dutch Drug Policy
11/10/2003 11:31 PMModern liberal democracies have increasingly been torn over the drug
policy debate. Its polarizing effects of have developed two distinct
stances: The proponents of legalization supporting the concept of
"harm reduction" and the prohibitionists who support the continuation
of the costly and often draconian drug war. Each camp claims that the
adverse effects of drug use would be better dealt with through their
methods. Prohibitionists insist the only way to solve the drug problem
requires the elimination of all narcotics use through the enforcement
of laws; proponents of legalization stress that the elimination of
drugs is an unachievable goal and instead promote methods to remove
the dangers and negative externalities from the already existing drug
use. Also the larger question of which policy constitutes a more
compatible relation with liberal democracy still looms. The proponents
of legalization have embodied the liberal philosophy of John Stewart
Mill stressing the individual's ability to make personal decisions;
whereas, the prohibitionist stance implies that people are not
rational consumers and must be protected from themselves. The Dutch
model presents a pragmatic and successful compromise between the two
camps of thought. After over 27 years of successful implementation,
the Netherlands should no longer have its back up against the wall
concerning its drug policy. Instead, it should begin to take the
offensive.
National Virus Defense System
National Virus Defense System
04/27/2004 03:29 AM
Got up at 2pm after 14 hours of sleep to make up for 30 hours of
demo preparation.
I feel rested but it's the kind of restful feeling one gets lying
on the asphalt and
lookup at the blue sky after getting hit by a truck. I
never been in such
an accident but I was in a head-on motocycle collision when I
was young and found
myself in a slow-mo flying through the air scene.I think
the
middle and the end part of an accident is a
very tranquile place to be.
No pain, no fear, just watching things happen. Weird.
One of the first news item I read was this Wired
piece on the national missile defense system which prompted me
to wonder if we'll
ever have a national virus defense system along with virus tax
levied against companies
whose vulnerabilities are used by virus found at the 'wall'.
E-commerce tax
is not popular among netizens, but I think taxing to improve the
Net and to encourage
better software and services might find more favorable support
among netizens.
