The Register is reporting that Sony will be launching a new music service specifically for its PSP portable gaming system. The new download service is supposed to be in place by March here to coincide with the launch of Sony's player. Tony Smith speculates that the service, once in place, could just as easily be used to push video content down to the device, which doesn't have a hard drive, but can accept flash MemoryStick in 1-2GB sizes—plenty big for a couple of movies.

I think if Sony's got a shot at the iPod, the PSP is it—it can do almost everything you'd want to do while on the road, including productivity stuff (if they release a keyboard).

Sony launched a noninfringing music downloading service, entering a growing market still dominated by Apple's iTunes and including a revised Napster .

Connect is based on a downloadable client , offers more than five hundred thousand songs, and offers now-traditional pricing: ninety-nine cents per song, with a subscription option. Additionally, Connect is appealing to indepedent labels for more content. As with iTunes, a digital rights management ( DRM ) application, MagicGate DRM , restricts sharing of downloaded music files. Connect's file format, ATRAC 3 , is not compatible with the popular iPod portable music player. The desktop client is available for Windows machines only.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates told the newspaper in an interview published on Thursday that the two companies could benefit from a broad partnership in digital entertainment, both having "a lot of incentive to work together" in digital-music "infrastructure," including online-music services and protection against improper music copying.

Wireless Watch Japan is reporting that Sony has partnered with Korean internet provider KT Corp. to offer internet service for the PSP via the company's 14,000 hotspots.
