Slicing and Dicing to Make Atom Soup in

Slicing and Dicing to Make Atom Soup in
dbagg3
08/27/2004 01:31 PM
I've been putting more work into dbagg3, but I'm getting hung up on the database. Well, actually I'm getting hung up on the subject of XML storage, query, and retrieval in general-- but at present, I'm trying to cram all this data into MySQL and SQLite databases. But, my tendencies as an abstraction astronaut and my lack of database savvy are tying me (and my data) in knots. I kept meaning to write a bit Atom (and XML in general) with regard to database storage and query, so maybe now's the time.

How to make really good bug reports

How to make really good bug reports 12/07/2003 03:00 PM
One of the best ways to help a developer improve their software is to report bugs. But of course there’s an art to bug reporting.

Most of the bug reports I get for NetNewsWire are very good. But now and again I get a report that isn’t that helpful, and I have to ask a bunch of questions before I understand it.

Here’s a made-up example:

“I subscribed to the The Cool Foo Bar feed, and it doesn’t display correctly.”

That immediately brings up a bunch of questions. The biggest one is: what’s the URL of the feed? Without the URL, I can’t possible reproduce the bug. If I can’t reproduce the bug, I can’t fix it.

More questions: does the feed validate? What view are you using (Combined View or traditional view)? What about the display is incorrect? What version of NetNewsWire are you using? What version of OS X are you using?

When I worked at UserLand we used to suggest a format for reporting bugs. It’s a good format, and I recommend it to anyone reporting bugs to anybody. The format:

1. What I did. This should include as much detail as possible.

2. What I expected.

3. What actually happened.

Knowing what was expected is important information. Sometimes bugs aren’t bugs but are misunderstandings. Sometimes the app is working as designed, but really it should work as the user expects. But most of the time a bug report describes an actual bug.

Another thing: if applicable, include a screen shot as part of #3. This doesn’t make sense for some types of bugs, but for display bugs it’s hugely valuable.

Now, as I said, most of the bug reports we get are quite good. So this is just for people who’d like to make their bug reports more useful.

Him: So how'd you do?
Me: Not too badly. I ran about nine and a half minute miles. I don't know though, it seems like I should be able to go faster than that.
Him: Yeah, I watched the eight minute milers and they don't look that different from you.
Me: Yeah, sometimes people pass me and I see them and think, I should be able to go that fast.
Him: Yeah, like this guy today. He was doing six minute miles, and he was in his sixties. And he was flying! And he only had one arm!
Me: [silent]

CAN SPAM Designed To Make Congressmen
Look Good - Not Stop Spam

CAN SPAM Designed To Make Congressmen
Look Good - Not Stop Spam
01/07/2004 06:36 PM
We all know now that the CAN SPAM law is a disaster and is unlikely to do anything useful in the battle against spam. It's also becoming clear that the entire point of the bill was never to stop spam, but to make a few folks in Congress look good (which seems to be the entire point of most politics these days). First, Business Week spends some time comparing the mostly effective federal "Do Not Call" list with CAN SPAM. The DNC list was planned out carefully by the FTC and the FCC, and, while it upset many telemarketers, it was designed in a way to be effective. There was also enough time, and enough publicity given to the list that people knew about it and had the opportunity to sign up for it - while marketers had the ability to prepare on their end as well. With CAN SPAM, however, it was rushed through Congress with little thought towards whether or not it would actually do anything and without any money to actually deal with any of these cases. Meanwhile, the NY Times reports that the sponsors of the bill asked the FTC to sue a spammer the very first week the bill was in effect in order to make a big "splash" so they could pat themselves on the back - even as the spam levels continued to increase. FTC Chair Timothy Muris (who has spoken out against this spam law) apparently laughed them off and pointed out it was impossible to do such a thing. First of all, in order to violate the law, the spammers have to ignore an opt-out request. Then, the FTC would have to track down who the actual spammer was - with no additional funds, because the law didn't provide for them.

Unitarianism: good enough for two
presidents, not good enough for Texas
05/19/2004 02:47 AM
The state of Texas has denied Unitarians tax-exempt religious status because the church "does not have one system of belief." As Julia notes, Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams were sufficiently convinced of the Unitarians' religiosity that they actually were Unitarians.
Never before -- not in this state or any other -- has a government agency denied Unitarians tax-exempt status because of the group's religious philosophy, church officials say. Strayhorn's ruling clearly infringes upon religious liberties, said Dan Althoff, board president for the Denison congregation that was rejected for tax exemption by the comptroller's office.

GM in trouble: "If you erased the company name from the balance sheet and showed it to a forensic accountant, the recommended treatment would probably be to seek protection from creditors by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. " GM's troubles are as much a result of the exploding costs of health care as they are due to the company's dropping market share. In Canada increasing health care costs (PDF with many charts) are taking a greater and greater share of government expenditures. In the US it's hurting big employers and regular people. But either way the problem doesn't seem likely to get better any time soon.

W3C wants Atom

W3C wants Atom 05/13/2004 01:59 PM

Looks like the W3C wants the Atom community to work through them.

I'm undecided whether or not I'm for this. On the one hand, the W3C certainly has the tools to promote and document Atom. On the other hand, adding Atom to their semantic web effort could make Atom even more complex - and simplicity is what makes RSS so great, despite it's imprecise specification (via Scoble).

Atom + CSS 10/29/2003 12:31 PM

I tried some minimal css on an experimental Atom feed and the results started to look promising - on Mozilla.  View source to see how it was done.

I then brought up the same page under IE, and it looks like IE didn't support a number of CSS features.  Worse, it seems to be stripping and/or interpreting escaped markup.  Finally, view source is not available.

Poking around to see if there were any workarounds, I came across this article by Tim Bray from 3.5 years ago...

Sigh.

Best RSS Parser Yet 01/06/2003 12:21 AM
The newest version of my RSS Parser is now available for download. I am really happy about this release. It fixed a lot of things previous versions were lacking. It now has clean error handling, optional caching, and more efficient code. Also, the function can now be called as many times as necessary on the same page. Previously, the function would break when called more than once on the same page. You can download this new version here. I will update my RSS Parser article tomorrow to reflect this update. As usual, please e-mail me any questions, comments, or suggestions you may have.
