I missed the ACME show on Saturday night, because I hurt my neck so badly on Friday, I couldn't even stand up Saturday morning. More on that later.

As if the pain in my neck and shoulders wasn't bad enough, I'm trying my best not to get sick, now. I think it's just the dry air from my heater and the weather the last few days, but my throat is sore and scratchy, and my sinuses are all dry and ouchy . . . so I'm just going to put up this quick reminder and get back into bed:

  1. I'll be reading and signing Just A Geek on Tuesday November 30th down in Huntington Beach, at Barnes & Noble. I have rehearsal that night, so the event will go from 7 until 8:30. Watch for me doing Warp 11 up the 405 to get back to Hollywood by 9!

  2. What's My Line? The show starts at 8. More details can be found at j.keith.net, including a two-for-one discount.

  3. I'll be at ACME this Saturday, December 4th, for a preview show of ACME Love Machine. The show starts at 8.

A Reminder about PHPCon and Discounts on It I just wanted to point out that PHPCon is now just a few weeks away (October 24 - 25) and I'll be there talking on security and programming practices for PHP. I asked Monica (my contact) about discounts for readers of this blog and she indicated that their discount structure is as follows: Non profits Students Groups -- if you can get a group of people together then discounts are available. So if you can get a group together then contact Monica at mktgevents dot com. I did confirm that everyone who attends will be getting the first issue of the new PHP Journal (which looks damn good and since Jeremy is involved, I know will be good). For more on PHPCon: And here's the "official text" in it's unvarnished, unmangled by me format (if you are wondering why I'm not listed, simple -- I'm running behind getting my abstracts in): PHPCon 2002 Early Bird Discount Deadline Approaching Don't miss a great event! Reminder: When Donating A Mobile Phone,
Turn Off Service

Reminder: When Donating A Mobile Phone,
Turn Off Service
05/21/2004 03:45 PM
Charities that ask for mobile phone donations are very popular these days. The phones are often resold or recycled and shipped to other countries that can use them. One particularly popular use of old mobile phones is to give them to the elderly. Federal law requires that even if a phone has no service, it has to be able to dial 911 (assuming the battery is charged) - so some groups give out these old phones to senior citizens to carry around in case of emergency. Engadget points us to the story of one man who donated two phones for just this purpose, but figured the charity would turn the Verizon Wireless service off for him. pho ne bills over $1,000 proved him to be wrong. Even worse, the charity in question doesn't know who they gave the phone to, so no one knows who's making these calls. Verizon Wireless is looking into the matter, but makes no promises, saying it was the guy's responsibility to turn off service.

Obama's DNC speech: a reminder of why
America is worth fighting for

Obama's DNC speech: a reminder of why
America is worth fighting for
07/28/2004 05:48 AM
Barack Obama, a Democratic Senatorial candidate from Illinois, gave a barn-burner of a speech last night at the DNC, full of fiery sentiment that reminds me of what I loved about the USA when I lived there, and why I stick up for it now that I'm in a part of the world where the America-bashing is often ill-considered and all-condemning:
If there's a child on the south side of Chicago who can't read, that matters to me, even if it's not my child. If there's a senior citizen somewhere who can't pay for her prescription and has to choose between medicine and the rent, that makes my life poorer, even if it's not my grandmother. If there's an Arab American family being rounded up without benefit of an attorney or due process, that threatens my civil liberties. It's that fundamental belief-I am my brother's keeper, I am my sisters' keeper-that makes this country work. It's what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family. "E pluribus unum." Out of many, one.

Yet even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America-there's the United States of America.

There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America. The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and have gay friends in the Red States.

There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported it. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

Then it got Slashdotted, drawing a bunch of fire form people who consider ActionScript, a Macromedia invention, to be the language Satan speaks when he stubs his toe. So, TurdHead has posted his reply, the punchline of which I won't spoil... When Macromedia launched the latest version of Flash in its' seventh incarnation, the developers decided it would be a good idea that it would take its' popular scripting language, ActionScript, and rebuild it from the ground up. The results have produced a far-more advanced and stricter programming language. More in some ways to C++ than to ECMA JavaScript from which the original language was based. Even long-time Flash programmers and developers realized that with the changes in the language, a great deal of education would be needed to get up to snuff.
