Ladies And Gentlemen, The Teeny Little Super Guy - not quite a meme, but more of a collective, "Oh man, I had totally forgotten about that" from the internet. This obscure 80s Sesame Street character's nostalgic resurgence has taken the form of a Livejournal Community, countless blog entries and even an indie rap video homage. Could Captain Vegetable be far behind [.wav file]?

While Steve Jobs is busy recovering from his cancer surgery in a hospital somewhere in California, Cupertino has been doing some recuperating of its own, largely through a flurry of software updates. This week alone, Mac OS X 10.3.5, Security Update 2004-08-09, iSync 1.5, iPod Updater 2004-08-06, Java Update 1.4.2 Update 1, DVD Studio Pro 3.0.1 and Safari 1.0.3 was released, just to name a few. With the new iMac release imminent, it seems most likely that Apple is simply doing some spring cleaning to make way for its newest family member. But what if the shelves are being cleared for something even bigger? Of course, all eyes will be on the Apple on Aug. 31, and rightfully so — a new G5 iMac has been confirmed by Apple itself, and now, we are all merely playing the waiting game. There’s no speculation, save to wonder just how cool it will actually be. But we all know how much Steve Jobs likes surprises. On Friday, The Register <A HREF="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/13/apple_tablet_mac/&q uot;>reported</A> on a recent European design trademark filing, "which may provide a tantalizing glimpse of the company"s long-awaited tablet computer. "The filing, made in May this year but only published this week, covers a "handheld computer" and contains sketches of what look like an iBook screen minus the body of the computer." Another recent filing, this time from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, <A HREF="http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2 =HITOFF&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.html&r=1&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=PG01& S1=apple.AS.&OS=an/(apple)&RS=AN/apple">describes</A> a "computing device includes a housing having an illuminable portion. The computing device also includes a light device disposed inside the housing. The light device is configured to illuminate the illuminable portion." Things are certainly happening at Cupertino, and while the Apple Expo will certainly bring big news for the Mac community, it may hold even greater surprises — assuming Steve is well enough to deliver the keynote presentation. And if not, there"s always Macworld San Francisco speculation…

To be honest, the news of iPods being stolen on a regular basis should not be that big of a surprise. I means seriously folks, these media devices are not cheap. So it is logical to assume that the theft of such items will only continue to climb, right?…

Economy of Scales: Groove with Your

triggerf.jpgHip-hop, rap, and electronic music changed forever in 1988. That was the year Akai introduced its legendary MPC-60 sampler/groovebox. Computers have looked enviously at music hardware ever since -- and no, clicking a 4x4 grid of drum pads on a screen with your mouse is not the same as doing it physically. But computers are about to strike back: M-Audio's upcoming USB-powered Trigger Finger (see CDM for details) costs just US$199, works with Mac and PC, and doesn't even need drivers. (via GearJunkie) If your fingers are itching to groove, this could be for you. Just start thinking about what your new DJ / hip-hop moniker will be. I'm opting for DJ Procrastinate, so that's taken.
