Define ‘policy,’ Part 1
09/08/2004 05:34 AMWhen last we met (in a virtual sense, that is), I had asked your help
in defining “policy†so that it no longer was the ambiguous term -
used by those of us in the identity management arena, those in the
security camp and those with an application or service to sell who
want to latch onto the latest buzzword - with so many meanings that it
really had no meaning. I knew I could count on you to come through,
and you did.

DIY Media Server Part 1
DIY Media Server Part 1
03/14/2005 04:34 PMAs my collection of MP3s, DVDs, and Mpegs has grown I often thought
to myself, “Why can’t my Tivo help me with all this media?” Then I
started searching the Internet to see what was out there that I could
use as a PC based alternative. I found numerous software packages
that would fit the bill. Some of the programs I found were
Showshifter, Meedio (formally HTPC), SageTV, and ByondTV. You really
get the most out of these programs if you have a TV tuner card however
my media library already existed.
I settled on Meedio after downloading the trial version and roaming
around its support forums for a while. While all the software
packages I mentioned above have their pluses and minuses, you have to
choose the one that fits your needs. That is what I think Meedio does
for me. While searching through the forums I came across many
plug-ins or add-on modules that I would like to incorporate into my
media server. Continued research lead me to a particular Meedio
user’s set-up. In my opinion it was what I hoped to see in mine.
(Check out Gaz’s set-up here.)
So, welcome to my journey into building my Meedio box. I look forward
to sharing my trials and tribulations with you as well as an
occasional picture. Please feel free to send me your comments about
this project. (e-mail
me)
Thanks to Gaz for sharing his server build.
See you in Part 2.

Spyware: Define Your Terms!
Spyware: Define Your Terms!
12/22/2004 01:52 AMThe French philosopher Voltaire said, “If you wish to talk to
me, first define your terms.” That admonition is more relevant
than ever, considering how computer literati are embroiled in
controversy over the exact definition of “spyware.”
Slangspeak catch-all terms like “junkware” and
“crapware” keep the broth on high simmer, while companies
like ComScore Networks, who want to legitimize their particular brand
of data gathering, spice things up by coining new terminology:
