AOL and InterActive had bold moves to announce on Monday, but only one company is doing it right.

Will ICANN Add A Tax On Dot Coms?

Will ICANN Add A Tax On Dot Coms? 03/29/2005 11:33 PM
Late last year, we noted that ICANN was trying to slip in an extra $0.75/year/domain "tax" on all .net domain holders. At the time, we noted it was expected that they would expand this tax to other domains (despite the fact that a few years ago the group was slapped down in its attempt to charge an extra buck per domain, since the group has no authority to impose a tax). Apparently, not enough people got upset about the $0.75 issue, because ICANN has come back and quietly slip ped a $2/year/domain tax on all .jobs and .travel domains. Next up may be .coms -- since the existing contract expires in 2007. Why does ICANN need all this extra money? That's not particularly clear. They're already getting much more money thanks to the controv ersial budget they got approved last year, that makes life difficult for smaller registrars. No wonder ICANN refused to open its books to its own board members and then kicke d off the board members who simply wanted to see what they were doing with the public's money.

Rolling Up Dead Dot Coms

Rolling Up Dead Dot Coms 01/28/2004 03:38 PM
There are plenty of stories of companies snapping up the assets of dead dot coms, but some companies take it to extremes. Workstream, a provider of web-based HR applications has bought the assets of seven dead dot coms that offered products or services related to what they do - and simply bolted them on to their own offering. Of course, buying up and integrating so many companies often means important things slip through the cracks. One of the companies they bought, Techengine, was the provider of the Techdirt Career Center - and no one from Workstream let us know that it had changed hands, and gave us no information on how to contact them. Thus, I'm not sure they've really figured out this whole roll-up thing. Generally, it helps to let the customers of your company know what's happened and how to contact you.

Search Returns! 08/03/2004 09:03 AM

So our behind-the-curtains team here at the Gawker Empire has been, well, besides basically keeping we lazy editors afloat, working hard to make sure that our websites do cool things like actually work. Brice (who I, of all editors, forgot on Sysadmin Appreciation, but will remember now) spent a long time finally building a search tool that would get the job done for Gizmodo (MT's search, god love it, just wasn't quite up to the task of handling of dozens to tens of dozens of requests at once), and we've been testing it out for the last week or so, and so far it's working pretty great.

I just thought I'd point it out to you (it's up there in the right hand corner), say thanks again to Brice and everybody who works so hard to make our jobs easier, and explain a little about the new search's extended features after the jump.
